United States

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Ohio): Fourteen people have been hospitalized – three of them serious ill with hemolytic uremic syndrome – and at least 68 attendees at a July 3rd Germantown, Ohio picnic have become ill, according to an update from Dayton & Montgomery County Public Health. Sixteen of the 68 outbreak victims are confirmed to be infected by E. coli O157.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Mexican Products and Spice Company (La Feria, TX) that a May 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Prismic Light International (Murfreesboro, TN) that a January 2012 inspection of the company’s facility revealed a failure to comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Vincent Piazza, Jr. & Sons Seafood, Inc. (Harahan, LA) that a February-March 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Silva Foods of Kansas City, Inc. (Kansas City, KS) that a May 2012 inspection of the company’s food processing facility found significant deviations from the requirements of the Acidified Food regulations.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Falengreen A/S recalls Urtekram Organic Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (140g; Best before 01-10-2012), due to mold growth in the bags. The recalled product was sold in grocery stores, supermarkets and Salling shops.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S recalls AH Pølseketchup/Hot Dog Ketchup (900g plastic bottles, L-code 3025098; 1800g plastic containers, L-code 3025091; 4.25kg Bag in box, L-code 3025087), due to contamination with lactic acid bacteria. The recalled products were sold to catering companies in Denmark; the 900g bottles also were sold to SuperBrugsen in Thisted.
  • Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): La Société Gabriel Coulet SA recalls Auchan brand Roquefort AOP Tranche (150g; Lot #120406156 and 120406159; Best before 06/10/2012) and Le Fromager brand Roquefort AOP Barquette (130/180g; Lot #120406164; Best before 13/07/12, 14/07/12 and 15/07/12), due to possible contamination with Escherichia coli O26:H11. The recalled products were sold from 13/06/2012 to 13/07/2012, inclusive.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Prompt Thai 2000 (Wholesale) recalls Kraft Cheez Whiz Original (450g; Product of Philippines; all codes and expiry dates), and Kraft Cheez Whiz Pimiento Flavour (450g; Product of Philippines; all codes and expiry dates), because the Philippines is a country not approved to export milk or milk-based dairy products into the European Union.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0999): Undeclared sulphite in champagne from France; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1000): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen poultry meat preparation from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1002): Mercury in swordfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1004): Undeclared milk ingredient in biscuits from Slovenia; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1005): Prohibited nitrofuran in frozen peeled shrimps from India; distributed to Greece.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): United World Foods Ltd. (Christchurch, NZ) recalls Sea Cuisine Frozen Oyster Meat (1kg bags; Code 2090), Sea Cuisine Frozen Battered Oysters (1kg bags; Code 2080), Sea Cuisine Frozen Crumbed Oysters (1kg bags; Code 2083), Sea Cuisine Frozen Floured Oysters (1kg bags; Code 2084) and Sea Cuisine Frozen Japanese Crumbed Oysters (500g bags; Code 2085), due to possible presence of Norovirus. The recalled products were sold in smaller retail and wholesale food outlets throughout New Zealand.
  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Bay Cuisine Ltd. (Napier, NZ) recalls The Mad Butcher Salami Roll (500g; All best before dates up to and including 17 August 2012), The Mad Butcher Pepperoni Roll (500g; All best before dates up to and including 17 August 2012), Ratanui Hams – cooked on the bone (Whole, half and champagne hams; All best before dates up to and including 12 September 2012) and Eazi Carve Plain Packed Boneless Leg Ham (Pieces and whole; All best before dates up to and including 9 September 2012), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria. The recalled products were sold in The Mad Butcher stores throughout New Zealand; ham products also were sold in Preston’s stores in Wellington, Porirua and Palmerston North.

  • Food Safety Recall: Giant Food Stores advises its customers that The Campbell Soup Company has recalled Campbells Oyster Stew Soup, Condensed (10.5-oz cans; UPC 5100003087), based on FDA’s findings of insanitary conditions of shellfish areas in Korea.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bi-Lo advises its customers that the manufacturer has recalled GrandAsia Oysters (8-oz can; UPC 19882-00204 or 19882-0204; All lots).
  • Prescription Pharmaceutical Product Recall: Sandoz recalls Introvale® Oral Contraceptive (Lot nos. LF00478C, LF00479C, LF00551C, LF00552C, LF00687C, LF00688C, LF00763C, LF00764C, LF00765C and LF01261C), due to a packaging flaw. The recalled lots were distributed only in the USA between January 2011 and May 2012.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Kabul Farms (Mississauga, ON) recalls Ground Beef Reg. and Ground Beef Lean (varying weight plastic bags; sold on May 31, 2012), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. No confirmed illnesses are associated with these products at this time. The recalled products were sold only from the Kabul Farms store at 255 Dundas Street West, Mississauga, ON.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Statoil recalls Smoked Salmon and Asparagus Salad (Sold May 21st through June 5th), after Listeria was reported in the smoked salmon that was used in the salad. The recalled salads were sold at Statoil Stations.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Skare East Ltd. recalls Minced Pork and Veal, 3-7% (500g pkgs; Package date 30.05.2012; Best before 07.06.2012), after Salmonella was detected in samples of the product.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danish Supermarket A/S recalls Organic Cane Sugar (Packed in Germany; Production date 10/4-2012; Best before 10/4-2015), due to contamination with mouse droppings, cardboard pieces and plastic strips.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): New Provis SA recalls Provis Loutraki Natural Mineral Water (0.5L; Expiration dates 10/1/13, 13/01/13, 15/5/13 and 18/5/13), due to contamination with off-white suspended particles of filamentous hyphae (mold).

  • Allergy Alert: Figi’s Inc. (Marshfield, WI) recalls Lemon Bar Bliss (1# tins; No expiration date codes) due to the presence of undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed in Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Louisiana, Oregon, and Utah by UPS mail directly to purchasers or recipients.
  • Food Safety Recall: H-E-B recalls 19 Asian Ready-to-Eat entrées and meals (4-oz, 8-oz, 12-oz, and 24-oz black containers with clear lid, single serve sizes and to-go containers; all products sold prior to 5/3/12) due to possible undercooking of chicken in those meals. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled items were sold in 40 stores in Texas, including one Houston store. They were available at the Grab ‘N Go section in H-E-B Delis.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC reports an outbreak of 14 cases of Salmonella Infantis infections in nine states. The infections are linked to contaminated dry dog food produced by Diamond Pet Foods at their Gaston, South Carolina manufacturing facility.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Church & Dwight Co. Inc. recalls Spinbrush® Recharageable SONIC toothbrushes (Lot # ranges DD9310 to 9365 or DD0002 to 0122; distributed between February 2010 and October 2011 in the USA and Canada), because the charging battery may overheat with localized melting and sparking, possibly causing fire, shock or burns.

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Church & Dwight Co. Inc. recalls Spinbrush® Recharageable SONIC toothbrushes (Lot # ranges DD9310 to 9365 or DD0002 to 0122; distributed between February 2010 and October 2011 in the USA and Canada), because the charging battery may overheat with localized melting and sparking, possibly causing fire, shock or burns.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): PepsiCo recalls Tropicana Kids Orange Juice Drink – Orange and a Splash of Water (4 x 200ml; illegible coding), because they contain water instead of orange juice drink. The water is not of a satisfactory microbial quality and should not be consumed.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): The Danish Gærfabrikker A / S recalls Maltese Cross Baker’s Yeast (50g; Package date 10/4-2012; Best before 15/5-2012), due to mold growth.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): Market In supermarkets recalls Daily-Toasted Unsweetened Croutons (Manufactured in Poland by Daily Orange SA; 285g; Batch #08.02.2013), because the product was manufactured with the illegal use of prepared egg yolk powder and is contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (France): The Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Repression of Fraud advises the public of the recall of POWERtabs Dietary Supplement for Men (10- and 20-capsule packages, with Best before date of 2013-12 and 2-capsule blister-pack, with Best before date of 2015-01), because the products contain the undeclared and unauthorized pharmaceutical substance dithio desmethyl carbodenafil.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0593): Omethoate in okra from Thailand; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0594): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of frozen mackerel from Ireland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0596): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0597): Plastic fragments in cinnamon sugar from Austria; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0598): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of smoked salmon from France; distributed to Italy.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0609): High Escherichia coli count in chilled cocksomb mint from Vietnam; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0610): High Escherichia coli count in chilled houttuynia from Vietnam; distributed to Norway.

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): LHF Ltd. recalls Lisa’s Organic Hummus Roasted Garlic (200g tub; Best before 11/05/12), due to contamination with Listeria. The recalled product was sold in supermarkets and some specialty stores throughout the South Island, and in two specialist organic stores in the Auckland region.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Euro Spices Pty Ltd. recalls Ground Coriander and other spice mixes (Product of India; Best before December 2015; Please refer to recall notice for a complete list of products and package sizes), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were sold in fruit and vegetable shops and independent supermarkets in New South Wales.
