United States

Outbreak Alert (Update): The New Mexico Department of Health reports that 226 confirmed and epidemiologically-linked cases of Shigella sonnei infection (shigellosis) have been identified in three southeastern counties of the state since May 2016. The cases, largely among preschool and school-aged children, occurred in Lea, Chaves, and Eddy counties. The Department of Health encourages parents to, where possible, not send their children to daycare or school when they are sick as it spreads shigellosis and other illnesses to other children and their families.

Outbreak Alert (Update): CDC reports that the outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses has expanded to 23 confirmed cases from 9 states. Twenty of the 23 victims are under the age of 18. Ten outbreak victims have been hospitalized, 7 of those have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). There have been no deaths. The outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 has been found in samples of I.M. Healthy brand SoyNut Butter collected from the homes of ill people in California, Oregon, and Washington, and in unopened containers of I.M. Healthy brand SoyNut Butter collected from retail locations in California. The company has recalled the affected products from both the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Outbreak Alert: The Pennsylvania Department of Health warns visitors and volunteers at the Heaven on Earth Farm animal rescue farm of an outbreak of Cryptosporidium infections associated with visits to the farm. Eleven people have fallen ill since February 14th; some of the victims were hospitalized, while others required out-patient treatment.

Allergy Alert: Riviana Foods Inc. recalls Ronzoni® Thin Spaghetti cartons (16-oz pkg; Manufacturing code JAN 20 19 K) that may contain an egg fettuccine product and may contain undeclared egg.

Food Safety Recall: H & B Packing Co., Inc. recalls 79,461 pounds of boneless beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O103. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. Some of the recalled product was available at Target and select Walmart stores.

Food Safety Recall: J & Y Dasung, Inc., (d.b.a. Som See Neh) recalls 78,335 pounds of frozen pork dumpling products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. Please refer to the recall notice for product details.

Pet Food Safety Recall: EuroCan Manufacturing recalls Barnsdale Farms®, Barnsdale Farms®-Select, Houndstooth® and Mac’s Choice® brands Pig Ears (individually shrink-wrapped, 6-pack, 12-pack and 25-pack bags; Lot #84) after routine testing detected Salmonella in a sample of the product. Distribution of the product has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation by the company and FDA. No illnesses have been reported at this time. Mac’s Choice Pig Ear 3 Pack and Snooter’s Pig Ear Value Pack (12 pack) were available at Wegmans stores.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Tessier dit Lavigne (Laval, QC) recalls Nut paste truffles (all batches) due to undeclared wheat, sesame, soy and sulfites.

Allergy Alert: La Reine Pâtisserie (Montreal, QC) recalls various pastries and baked goods due to undeclared sesame seeds. Please refer to the recall notice for details.

Allergy Alert: Salades et Mets Hanobak inc. (Montreal, QC) recalls Red Cabbage Salad (250g; All batches) due to undeclared sulfites).

Allergy Alert: Viandes Nada Extra inc. (Montreal, QC) recalls Spicy Beef Salami (450g) due to undeclared soy.

Europe

Allergy Alert (Germany): dm recalls dmBio apple with banana and millet (190g; Expiry 03.02.2019) due to undeclared due to undeclared gluten-containing grains (oats, spelled, barley).

Allergy Alert (Ireland): Lidl recalls Kania Pastillas / Cubos caldo de verduras /legumes / Vegetable Stock Cubes (120g; best-before: 27.12.2018; batch: L305145 7009AM) due to undeclared soybeans and celery. The product, which is labeled only in Spanish and Portuguese, may also contain lupin, mustard, sesame and cereals containing gluten as unintentional contaminants.

Allergy Alert (Northern Ireland): Craig Foods recalls Slemish Assorted Pastry (6-pack; All dates up to and including 24 April 2017) and Slemish Cupcakes (4-pack; All dates up to and including 20 April 2017) due to undeclared milk.

Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Finland): Pro Nutrition Finland Oy recalls Prezone and Prezone stimulant-free dietary supplements because they contain an unapproved novel food. Please refer to the recall notice for full details.

Food Safety Advisory (Germany): The Bavarian Ministry of Consumer Protection warns the public not to consume certain Red Snapper fish fillet frozen from Vietnam, because the fish may contain algal toxins. Please refer to the advisory for additional details.

Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Sari Sari recalls Zean peanut butter (370g; 30/08/2018; Lot #01160802) due to the presence of aflatoxin in the product.

Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Bisca A/S recalls Snøfler (Best before 13/7-2017; Code #17047312; EAN barcode 5709364674609) due to a risk of metal fragments in the product. The recalled product was sold at Kvickly, SuperBrugsen, Brugsen, Dagli´/Lokal Brugsen, Fakta, Fakta Q, Irma, Coop.dk/mad, Netto, føtex, bilka, Lidl, Rema1000, ABC Lavpris.

Food Safety Recall Update (Denmark): Nr. Søby Kød Engros AS recalls vacuum-packed Smoked Sausage (Produced 17-02-2017; Best before 18-05-2017) due to detection of Listeria in the product.

Food Safety Recall (Sweden): ICA recalls ICA Microwave Popcorn (3 pairs), ICA I love eco Microwave Popcorn (3 pairs), ICA Micropocorn (10 pack) and ICA Microwave Popcorn butter flavor (3 pack) because of an increased risk that the package is burned in the microwave oven. Food Safety Recall (Wales): Douglas Willis Ltd recalls CMR Burger, Chuck Burger, 6oz Halal Burger, Venison Burger, Venison Sausage, Pork Own Thick Sausage, Lamb & Rosemary Sausage, Gourmet Sausage, Gourmet Pork & Leek Sausage (Batch 17079; All Sausages packed on 20/3/2017 with Use By Date of 29/03/2017; All Burgers packed on 20/3/2017 with Use By Date of 26/03/2017) as they may contain small pieces of hard plastic.

Australia and New Zealand

Food Safety Recall (Australia): The Pork Pie Shop recalls The Pork Pie Shop Pork Pies and The Pork Pie Shop Ascot Pies (all batches) due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled pork pies were sold at butchers and small grocery stores in South Australia.

  • Allergy Alert: Giant Eagle recalls Giant Eagle Lotsa Chocolate Chip Cookies (Tub; UPC 3003407516; All lot numbers and date codes), because the back label is incorrectly labeled as Ginger Snaps and does not declare the presence of soy as an allergen.
  • Food Safety Recall: Schmalz’s European Provisions (Springfield, NJ) recalls Applegate Organics Chicken and Apple Sausage (12-oz vacuum pkgs; Use or Freeze By 03/17/13; Est. P-5411), because the sausages may contain small pieces of plastic. The recalled product was sold in retail stores nationwide and through limited internet sales in New Jersey.
  • Food Safety Recall: Zachary Confections, Inc. recalls Zachary Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Egg Crates (5 oz; Product #31-797; Unit UPC 0 75186 15797 8; Code dates D3245D, D3145E, F3145E, D3245E; Best Buy Date 02/14/14), due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was shipped on February 21 and 22, 2013, and was distributed to some retail stores in sections of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Company recalls QFC Tender Twist Wheat Bread (20 oz), Kroger Value Wheat Bread (22.5 oz), Fred Meyer Tender Twist 100% Whole Wheat Bread (24 oz), Fred Meyer Tender Twist Honey Cracked Wheat Bread (24 oz), and Fred Meyer Tender Twist Wheat Bread (22.5 oz), because the products may contain pieces of plastic. The recalled breads were sold at Fred Meyer and QFC stores.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: United Pet Group, Inc. recalls Ultra Blend Gourmet, Food for Parakeets (80oz bag; UPC 26851 00904; Item # A904 / 056-0904-01; USE BY dates 07/20/15 and 10/20/15), ēCotrition Grains & Greens, Nutritional Supplement for Parakeets (8oz bag; UPC 26851 00505; Item # A505 / 11-20700; USE BY dates 10/23/15 and 11/14/1), ēCotrition Grains & Greens, Nutritional Supplement for Canaries and Finches (8oz bag; UPC 26851 00546; Item # C546 / 11-20712; USE BY date 10/16/15), and ēCotrition Grains & Greens, Nutritional Supplement for Cockatiels (6.5oz bag; UPC 26851 00512; Item # B512 / 11-20711; USE BY date 12/05/15). The recalled products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, as they contain small quantities of dried parsley flakes that were recalled on February 11, 2013 by Specialty Commodities, Inc.  due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were distributed throughout the USA and Canada between October 2012 and February 2013.
  • Food Safety Alert: The California Department of Public Health advises consumers not to eat recreationally harvested mussels, clams or whole scallops from Marin County, as dangerous levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins have been detected in mussels from this region. Clams and scallops may also pose a health risk. The warning does not extend to commercially sold clams, mussels, scallops or oysters from approved sources.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: IGA de Cotret Brazeau (Gatineau, QC) recalls Salade d’épinards au poulet (undeclared wheat and soy), Trempette aux épinards (undeclared sulfites), and Salade de patates (undeclared milk), due to the presence of undeclared allergens.
  • Allergy Alert: Overwaitea Food Group LP recalls Kettle brand Honey Roast Nuts & Fruit Mix (24 lb; Best before 26MAY12 to 04APR13; UPC 84114 01900), Kettle brand Natural Chocolate Lover’s Mix (24 lb; Best before 03JUL12 to 15JUN13; UPC 84114 01815) and Kettle brand Honey Roast Harvest Mix (24 lb; Best before 27JUN12 to 09JUN13; UPC 84114 01910), due to undeclared sulfites. The recalled products were sold to consumers in Alberta and British Columbia.

  • Allergy Alert: UNFI Canada Grocery West and Horizon Distributors Ltd. recall Kettle brand Honey Roast Nuts & Fruit Mix (24 lb; Best before 26MAY12 to 04APR13; UPC 84114 01900), due to undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was sold to consumers in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Produits Alimentaires Italiens Milano Inc. recalls New Milano Pepperoni and Mini Pepperoni (5 x 10 lb; Code 2013 FEB 12; UPC 1 80019 00011 3) due to Listeria and Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was supplied to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario and Quebec.

Europe

  • Food Fraud Recall (France): Panzani recalls Panzani brand Raviolis Pur Boeuf (canned beef ravioli), after horse meat was detected in certain cans of the ravioli.
  • Food Fraud Alert (Sweden): Ikea has ordered stores to stop selling Wallenbergare veal patties as well as cabbage and beef gratin (kålpudding), due to potential adulteration with horse meat. In addition, Ikea has ordered its stores in France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Portugal to stop selling Vienna Sausage.
  • Food Fraud Product Withdrawal (UK): Welsh Bros. Ltd. reports that a sample of its meat has “potentially” tested positive for horse meat, causing several Welsh councils to withdraw the meat from their schools and care homes.
  • Food Fraud Product Withdrawal (Russia): Russia reports having detected horse meat in pork sausages (frankfurters) imported from Austria. The implicated sausages were manufactured by Landhof (Linz, Austria).
  • Food Safety Recall (France): McCormick France recalls Ducros brand Flacons Persil Ducros (Lot #L3010-L3011; Expiry 12.07.2014 – 13.07.2014) and Assaisonnement Persillade Ducros (Lot L3011; Expiry 11.01.2015), because a limited number of the jars may contain a fragment of glass.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Kilshanny Farmhouse Cheese recalls Kilshanny Farmhouse Cheese Gouda Herb Cheese (Product of Ireland; Production date 19/09/2012), due to E. coli O157 contamination. The recalled product was sold in a foodstall in the Limerick Mill Market and in a retailer in Co. Clare.
  • Food Fraud Notification (EU #2013.0254): Adulteration (horse DNA) of chili con carne from Belgium, with raw material from Ireland; distributed to Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

  • Allergy Alert: Bruce Foods Corporation (New Iberia, LA) recalls Food Club Red Enchilada Sauce (10 oz can; Code GES 462449; Best before 12/3/2016), because the cans may contain Green Enchilada Sauce instead of Red. The Green Enchilada Sauce contains wheat and soy, which are not indicated on the labels of the Red Enchilada Sauce. The recalled product was supplied to retailers in Virginia and Minnesota between 1/15/2013 and 1/16/2013.
  • Food Safety Recall: GoldCoast Salads (Naples, FL) recalls Blue Crab Spread (1-lb & 8-oz containers; EXP 21/14/13 B), Maine Lobster Spread (1-lb & 8-oz containers; EXP 2/16/13 LA), Lobster and Shrimp Spread (1-lb & 8-oz containers; EXP 2/23/13 L&S1 and EXP 3/30/13 L&S1), and Smoked Salmon Spread (1-lb & 8-oz containers; 3/10/13 S2), due to possible Listeria contamination. The recalled products were supplied to stores in the North East and South East USA.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: The Honest Kitchen recalls Verve pet food (4 lb & 10 lb box; Item code V4 + VR; Production date 8/20/12; Expiry 8/20/13; Lot #2332A, batches 1-3), Verve pet food (10-lb box; Item code VR; Production date 11/1/12; Expiry 11/1/13; Lot 3062A, batches 8 & 9), Thrive  pet food (1 oz sample; Item code TM; Production date 9/18/12; Expiry 9/18/13; Lot 2622A, batch 3), Zeal pet food (4 lb & 10 lb box; Item code Z4 + ZR; Production date 8/14/12; Expiry 8/14/13; Lot 2272A, batches 1-5) and Zeal pet food (10 lb box; Item code ZR; Production date 9/21/12; Expiry 9/21/13; Lot 2652A, batches 1-4), due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were sold across the USA and Canada.
  • Pet Treat Safety Recall Update: Kasel Associates Inc. recalls all pet treats manufactured from April 20 through September 19, 2012 due to potential contamination with Salmonella. FDA has received a ‘small number of complaints’ of illness in dogs who were exposed to these treats. During a follow-up inspection at the firm, FDA sampled finished pet treat products and the environment for Salmonella. All of the pet treat products and 48 of the 87 environmental samples tested positive for Salmonella. The agency found more than 10 different Salmonella in the products and the manufacturing facility. Because of the multiple positive tests for Salmonella, and the production practices and conditions observed at the facility during the inspection, FDA believes that there is a reasonable probability that pet treat products manufactured in the facility from April 20, 2012 through September 19, 2012 are contaminated with Salmonella. Affected brands include Boots & Barkley, Petco, Kasel, Menards, Target, Nutri-Vet, Nature’s Deli (Sam’s Club and Costco), and TDBBS Inc. Best Bully Sticks.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: FDA enters into consent decree with U Joo Foods, a sprout grower located in Chicago. Under the consent decree, U Joo Foods is prohibited from processing and distributing food until they demonstrateto the FDA that the facility and processing equipment are suitable to prevent contamination in the food that they process, prepare, store, and handle.  In addition, they must routinely test the water where the sprouts are grown for evidence of contamination.

  • Pet Food Safety Recall: The Honest Kitchen recalls Verve pet food (4 lb & 10 lb box; Item code V4 + VR; Production date 8/20/12; Expiry 8/20/13; Lot #2332A, batches 1-3), Verve pet food (10-lb box; Item code VR; Production date 11/1/12; Expiry 11/1/13; Lot 3062A, batches 8 & 9), Thrive  pet food (1 oz sample; Item code TM; Production date 9/18/12; Expiry 9/18/13; Lot 2622A, batch 3), Zeal pet food (4 lb & 10 lb box; Item code Z4 + ZR; Production date 8/14/12; Expiry 8/14/13; Lot 2272A, batches 1-5) and Zeal pet food (10 lb box; Item code ZR; Production date 9/21/12; Expiry 9/21/13; Lot 2652A, batches 1-4), due to potential Salmonella contamination.   • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Minderleinsmühle GmbH & Co. KG recalls Linseed (25kg, 1000g and 500g packs; Best by 31.08.2013, 31.10.2013, 30.11.2013 and 07.12.2013) due to consumer complaints of foreign bodies in the products.
  • Food Fraud Withdrawal (Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, UK): Iglo withdraws all meat products manufactured by Frigilunch N.V. (Belgium) after Iglo Chili Con Carne tests positive for horse DNA at 2%. Affected products were sold under the Iglo and Birds Eye brands.
  • Food Fraud Withdrawal (Ireland): Birds Eye withdraws all batch codes and dates of Beef Lasagne, frozen (400g), Traditional Spaghetti Bolognese, frozen (340g) and Shepherd’s Pie, frozen (400g), after the detection of horse DNA in a chilli con carne product manufactured at Frigilunch N.V. (Belgium) for Birds Eye. The chilli con carne was sold only in Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0223): Norovirus in chilled oyster from France; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Fraud Notification (EU #2013.0224): Suspicion of fraud (horse DNA) in relation to penne bolognese from Germany; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0226): Salmonella in chilled boneless pork meat from Spain; distributed to Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0228): Salmonella Heidelberg in frozen chicken meat from Brazil; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0229): Folpet in batavia lettuce from France; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0230): Plastic fragments in frozen diced red peppers from Poland; distributed to Germany.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Chinese Medicine Recall (Hong Kong): Dragon Ginseng Enterprise (HK) Limited recalls Dragon Ginseng Flavon”, “Dragon Ginseng Sapon”, “Dragon Ginseng Ginseng Powder (50 sachets per box)” and “Dragon Ginseng Ginseng Powder (two bottles per box)”, because the medicines are believed to be unregistered.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert: Koala Popcorn Pty Ltd. recalls Koala Popcorn Chicken Flavour (25g net; All best before dates up to and including 07.07.13), due to undeclared milk. The recalled product was available in school canteens and via a small number of vending machines.
