United States

  • Allergy Alert: Whole Foods Market recalls Roasted Garlic and Eggplant Soup (24-oz containers; Sell by October 4, 2012), because the container actually hold Lobster Bisque and contain undeclared shellfish and milk. The recalled soup was sold in Whole Foods Market stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey between September 29 and October 2, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Xan Confections recalls 13 of its peanut butter chocolate products, because the peanut butter may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed from May 28, 2012 through Sept. 28, 2012 at retail locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and Nova Scotia (Canada), as well as over the Internet.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Grindstone Neck of Maine, LLC (Winter Harbor, ME) that a July/August 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns C.C. & Son Farms, Incorporated (Ripon, CA) that an April 2012 inspection of the company’s shell egg production facility found serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Petaluma Farms (Petaluma, CA) that a March-April 2012 inspection of the company’s shell egg production facilities found serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The American Bottling Company, Inc. (Plano, TX) that a March 2012 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility found serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Cape Florida Seafood, Inc. (Miami, FL) that a May-June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing establishment found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert Update: Saskatchewan Ministry of Health is investigating 13 cases of E. coli in the province to determine whether they are linked to the recall of E. coli O157:H7-contaminated beef from XL Foods.   • Food Safety Recall: Nestle Canada Inc. recalls Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream (11.4L; Batch codes 22080375 BB 2014 07 26 & 22090375 BB 2014 07 27), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled ice cream was distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutional clients in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Yukon.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Coop Trading A/S recalls Coop Penne Rigate Pasta (500g; Best before 19/9-2014) and Coop Spaghetti Pasta (1 kg; Best before 19/9-2014), due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Albert Heijn recalls the following Albert Heijn brand smoked salmon, manufactured by Foppen, due to Salmonella contamination: AH gerookte zalmblokjes, AH gerookte zalmfilet, AH gerookte zalmsnippers, AH sandwich zalmplakken, AH warmgerookte zalm, AH warmgerookte zalmstukken, AH zalmsalade, Euro Shopper gerookte zalmfilet, AH Excellent schotse zalmfilet, AH Excellent seizoenszalm, AH Excellent zalmhaasje gerookt, AH puur&eerlijk Sockey zalm.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Lubna Foods Ltd. recalls Manzoor Dry Dates (25kg; Best before end December 2013) and Chuwara Supreme Dry Dates (6 x 1 kg; Batch 171 12; Best before 20 December 2013), because the products may be infested with insects.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Lightbody Ventures Ltd. recalls all batch codes of Annabel Karmel Apple and Blackcurrant Oaty Chewy Bars bearing Disney characters (110g and 132g packs) and Annabel Karmel Apple and Raspberry Oaty Chewy Bars bearing Disney characters (110g and 132g packs), because the products may be infested with insects.
  • Food Safety Alert (Italy): The public prosecutor in Bari has ordered the seizure nationwide of the following cheeses manufactured by Fattorie Chiarappa, because cheese produced by this manufacturer was linked to an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in the USA: Ricotta frescolina marte tipo toscanella, Ricotta Torretta Marte, Ricotta frescolina Marte arrostita, Ricotta marzotica Marte tipo greca, and Ricotta marzotica Marte.
  • Food Withdrawal (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S withdraws AH Sausage Ketchup (900g; Lot #3028437; Best before 24-02-2013), due to gas production in the product by lactic acid bacteria.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): The outbreak of acute gastroenteritis has grown to 10,008 confirmed cases in Brandenburg (3,132), Berlin (2,655), Sachsen (approx 3,200), Sachsen-Anhalt (57) and Thüringen (964). The outbreak patients are associated with canteens at 416 schools and child care centers in those states.
  • Outbreak Alert (Netherlands): BBC reports that approximately 200 people have become ill after consuming smoked salmon contaminated with Salmonella Thompson.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1373): Diazinon in yellow peas from Russia; distributed to Portugal and Spain.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1374): Lack of clear allergen labeling on soft drink from Jamaica; distributed to United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1375): Suspected histamine in butterfish from Spain; distributed to Latvia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1376): Tin in canned artichoke hearts from China; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1377): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled boneless beef from Lithuania; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1379): Cadmium in large chilled dried anchovies from China; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1381): Salmonella typhimurium in fresh chicken meat from France; distributed to France, Germany and Luxembourg.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1382): Salmonella Thompson in smoked salmon from Greece; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1383): Listeria monocytogenes in ready to eat pork meat product from France; distributed to France and Switzerland.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1384): Traces of egg in muffins from Hungary; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1385): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled ready to eat salad and side dishes from Denmark; distributed to Denmark and Sweden.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): A Norovirus outbreak has sickened 45 patients and 45 staff members at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital according to a report from The New Zealand Herald. Children will be barred from the wards until the outbreak is over and the alert has been lifted.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. Inc. recalls certain fresh-cut fruit packages containing mangoes from Agricola Daniella, because the mangoes may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products include Mango Slices, Tropical Fruit Medley, Tropical Fruit Bowl, Seasonal Blend, Mango Chunks, Tropical Blend, Pineapple/Mango/Grape, Strawberry/Kiwi/Mango, Apple Blend and Fruit Bowl. The products were sold under the Del Monte and 7 Eleven Fresh To Go brands, and also under Generic labels (sold at Walmart stores).   • Food Safety Recall: Newman’s Own Organics recalls Peanut Butter Newman-O’s Sandwich Crème Cookies (8 oz/ 6 pack; Expiration 27MAY13) and Peanut Butter Newman-O’s Sandwich Crème Cookies (13 oz/6 pack; Expiration 3MAY13), because the cookies were made using peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.
  • Food Recall: Food City alerts its customers to the recall of Valu Time Orange Juice Recon. No reason is given for the action.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency alerts the public to a further expansion of the XL Foods (Est 38) beef recall, due to potential contamination with E. coli O157:H7. Four E. coli O157 illnesses have been associated with the consumption of beef products originating from this XL Foods facility.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Valpiform recalls Valpiform Pain Soleil (400g; Expiry 24/12/2012 & 24/11/2012), Pain de Mie (350g; Expiry 21/11/2012), and Pain de Mie aux Fibres (350g; Expiry 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, 24/11/2012 & 21/12/2012), because the products, which are labeled “sans arachide,” contain traces of peanut.
  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Valpiform recalls Allergo Pain aux Grains (400g; Expiry 25/10/2012, 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, & 24/11/2012), Pain de Mie (350g; Expiry 21/11/2012, 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, 13/12/2012, & 14/12/2012), and Pain de Mie aux Fibres (350g; Expiry 24/10/2012, 23/11/2012, 24/11/2012, 14/12/2012), because the products, which are labeled “sans arachide,” contain traces of peanut.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Det Eksotiske Catering recalls Wheat Kernel Salad (325g; All best before dates from 28.09.2012 through 08.10.2012), Exotic Pasta Salad with Chicken (275g; All best before dates from 28.09.2012 through 08.10.2012), Humus (175g and 1 kg; all best before dates from 22.10.2012 through 31.10.2012) and Cacik, Tzatziki (175g and 1 kg; all best before dates from 22.10.2012 through 31.10.2012), because Listeria was found in samples of these products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): The manufacturer recalls Holle brand Bio Babybrei 3 Kom ab dem 6ten Monat (Product of Switzerland; 250g; Lot R11171; Expiry 25/04/2013), because the product contain Ochratoxin A in excess of permitted limits.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Euro Quality Lambs Ltd. recalls Euro Quality Lambs’ lamb brain (all date and batch codes), because the products entered the food chain without proper inspection.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): The outbreak of acute gastroenteritis has now affected 8,962 persons and caused 23 to be hospitalized. The outbreak involves 369 schools and child care centers in five regions: Brandenburg (2,896 illnesses), Berlin (2,223 illnesses), Sachsen (2,880 illnesses), Sachsen-Anhalt (50 illnesses), and Thüringen (913 illnesses). The source and root cause of the outbreak is still under investigation.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Nine staff members at Tauranga Hospital have become infected with norovirus in an outbreak that also has affected 22 hospital patients.

  • Allergy Alert: Grand BK (Maspeth, NY) recalls goodies by nature brand Black Mix Crisp and Crisp Mix (7-oz plastic containers; All products sold prior to July 27, 2012), due to the presence of undeclared peanut.
  • Food Safety Recall: Harry and David, LLC recalls Harry & David® Crunchy Almond and Peanut Butter, Harry & David® Creamy Banana Peanut Spread, and Harry & David® Creamy Raspberry Peanut Spread (Best By dates of 01MAY13 through 24SEPT13), because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The following multi-component food items also are affected: Harry & David® Apple Snack Box, Wolferman’s® Bee Sweet Gift Basket, Wolferman’s® Hearty Snack Gift Basket, Wolferman’s® All-Day Assortment Gift Basket, and Wolferman’s® Father’s Day Basket (Lot codes 1212M through 2372M, 1212H through 2372H, or 1212C through 2372C).
  • Food Safety Recall: Justin’s recalls Justin’s brand Classic Peanut Butter Jars (16 oz; UPC 855188003004; Best by 08-07-13), Honey Peanut Butter Squeeze Packs (1.15 oz; UPC 855188003042; Best by 07-24-13, 07-25-13) and Honey Peanut Butter 0.5 oz Squeeze Pack (0.5 oz; UPC 894455000391; Best by 07-14-13, 08-10-13, 08-13-13, 08-14-13, 08-15-13), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dale and Thomas Popcorn recalls the following flavors of Indiana-brand popcorn products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes: Aged White Cheddar, Almond Biscotti, American Cheese, Apple Crisp, Bacon Ranch, Black & White Drizzle, Caramel, Caramel Roasted Peanuts, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cinnamon Sugar Drizzle, Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip Drizzle, Kettlecorn, Salt & Pepper, and Wasabi Reserve. The recalled products were distributed to various retailers (including Walmart), vendors, distribution centers and consumers through the Internet on or after August 8, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Oregon Ice Cream Company recalls Alden’s Organic Peanut Butter ‘n Chip Ice Cream (48 oz; UPC 0 72609 74191 2; Code dates 12195-12261) and Cascade Glacier Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream (3 gal; UPC 0 72609 60082 0; Code date 12223), because they contain peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: Jer’s™ Chocolates recalls Peanut Butter Bars (3.0 oz; Original, Pretzo, Toffee and Caramella varieties), Jer’s Squares (16-oz Gable Box – Original/Pretzo) and Jer’s Squares Gable Box (4.0 oz; Original, Pretzo, Toffee and Caramella varieties), because the products contain peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella.   • Pet Food Safety Recall: DOG for DOG, LLC recalls DOGSBUTTER brand DOG for DOG All Natural Jarred Peanut Butter Treat for Dogs (Manufacturing dates of May 1 through September 24, 2012), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Fromagerie des Grondines (Deschambault-Grondines, QC) recalls Fromage Grand 2 (variable weight; Package dates before 21 September 2012), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. One product-related illness has been reported.
  • Food Safety Recall: Champ’s Mushrooms (Aldergrove, BC) recalls Champ’s Mushrooms brand Sliced Crimini Mushrooms (200g / UPC 6 78286 99933 4 / Code 260 S4189; 227g / UPC 6 78286 88877 5 / Codes PO 15SEP2012 or PO 16SEP2012; and 454g / UPC 6 78286 88881 2 / Codes PO 15SEP2012), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled mushrooms were distributed in Alberta and British Columbia and may also have been distributed in other provinces.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded its earlier Health Hazard Alert to include additional products and retail distribution information for Energy Nuggets (Imported from USA). These products may be contaminated with Salmonella. Please refer to the recall notice for full details.
  • Food Safety Recall: Costco advises its customers that XL Foods Inc. has expanded its recall to include additional beef and beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Some of this recalled beef may have been produced and sold in Costco Wholesale warehouses between August 28 and September 27, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: JD Sweid Foods Ltd. recalls various Ground Beef Patties supplied to the hotel/restaurant/institutional market, because the beef may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Europe

  • Outbreak Alert (Germany): The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and the Robert Koch Institute are investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that appears to be food-related. As of 28 September 2012, at least 4,658 cases have been reported in Brandenburg (1,194), Berlin (600 or more), Saxony (2,100) and Thuringia (764). Most of the outbreak victims are children and teenagers. Earliest onset of illness was the evening of September 25th, with additional cases occurring on September 27th and 28th. Most cases have been of short duration and self-limiting. Authorities believe that the outbreak is related mainly to canteens at child and adolescent care facilities. All of the suspect facilities were supplied with meals by the same food service company. Lab studies of patients and food samples are in progress.
  • Allergy Alert: Flying Trade withdraws Big Bamboo Jamaican Irish Moss Vanilla Flavoured Drink (284 ml; Best Before end date 24 February 2014) because the product contains milk that is not mentioned on the label.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Lackmann Fleisch- und Feinkost GmbH recalls  Tuschonka Vostochnaya Turkey in its own juice (400g cans; Expiry 17/02/2013; SKU #167) and Tuschonka is Konini Horse Meat in its own juice (400g cans; Expiry 17/02/2013; SKU #155), due to a lack of heat treatment.
  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): Foppen recalls Smoked Salmon (Oval logo on the packaging containing the codes EL-41A82EC or EN-6115EG; All lots), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled smoked salmon was sold by stores in the Albert Heijn, Aldi and Superunie supermarket chains.
  • Food Safety Recall: P&B (Foods) Limited recalls Heera Dry Dates (various package sizes, batch codes and Best before dates), due to insect infestation. Please refer to the recall notice for additional details.
  • Topical Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Laboratoire ARROW Génériques recalls Amorolfine Arrow 5% medicated nail polish (Lot K004; Expiry 03/2014), due to an error in the expiration date, which should be shown as 2013 instead of 2014.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Oral Medication Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or consume the oral product called Long Ren Tang Fu She Gu Rang Jiao Nang, as it contains multiple undeclared and unauthorized Western drugs, including including diclofenac, piroxicam, indomethacin, naproxen, ibuprofen, dipyridamole, hydrochlorothiazide, metoclopramide and cimetidine.
