United States

  • Allergy Alert: Price Chopper Supermarkets recalls Central Market Classic Cinnamon Nut Coffee Cakes (Expiration date of October 17 through October 25, 2012), because they were incorrectly labeled as Pumpkin Coffee Cakes and, therefore, contain undeclared tree nuts. The recalled product was sold on or after October 11, 2012 at the Mountain Road store in Worcester, MA.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Beef and Cheese Pastellios recalled by Cantina Foods, because the products were manufactured without benefit of federal inspection.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Cidrerie Michel Jodoin recalls Vista Bella Michel Jodoin Sparkling Apple Must, No Alcohol (750 mL; Lot 1112; UPC 6 09780 01127 7), due to contamination with patulin, a mycotoxin. The recalled product was sold in Quebec.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): MB Food A/S recalls “Ungdyr bovklump” (Packaged 22/11-2012; Best before 22/12/2012), due to contamination with Salmonella Dublin.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Luen Hing Hong recalls [Fung Shing Pai] Tian-Ma Wan (Registration Numer HKP-00317), because the product contains about 1.7 times the permitted level of lead.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: VEGGIE PATCH® recalls VEGGIE PATCH brand The Ultimate Meatless Burger, refrigerated, fully cooked (9-oz trays; Use by Jan/12/2013; UPC 6-10129-00211-5) and VEGGIE PATCH brand Falafel, refrigerated, fully cooked (9-oz trays; Use by Jan/15/2013; UPC 6-10129-06619-3), due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled burgers were sold on or after November 21, 2012 in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Indiana, Wisconsin, Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware; the recalled falafels were sold nationwide. The contamination was discovered as part of VEGGIE PATCH’s routine product testing.
  • Food Safety Recall: Trader Joe’s recalls Trader Joe’s Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice (12.5 oz boxes; Product Code 2012-10-31; sku 99032; Production date 305 12), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was recalled by the Canadian manufacturer, Aliya’s Foods Limited (Canadian Est. No. 720). The recalled product was sold in Trader Joe’s stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, DC.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wa Heng Dou Fu & Soy Sauce Corporation (Sacramento, CA) recalls all Hua Xing brand Dou-Fu products and all Wa Heng brand Dou-Fu, Tofu, and Soy Milk products (All products manufactured before 11/28/12), due to potential contamination with filth. The recalled products were sold in Northern California.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Costco and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency alert the public to the recall of VEGGIE PATCH brand The Ultimate Meatless Burger (1.02 kg refrigerated trays; Product of USA; Best before Jan/12/2013 and Jan/17/2013; UPC 6-10129-08477-7), due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled item was sold between November 24th to November 29th, 2012 in Costco Wholesale warehouse stores in Quebec, Ontario (Oshawa and Ottawa stores only), New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Compass Food Sales (Aurora, ON) recalls Compass brand California Walnuts, in-shell (300g; Product of USA; UPC 0 68297 20121 0; Best before 07MA2014), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled walnuts were distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Loblaws Companies Ltd. (Brampton, ON) recalls Filberts (hazelnuts), in-shell (Product of USA; sold in bulk or in 454g bags bearing UPC 7 75636 10004 1), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled filberts were distributed nationally in Real Canadian Super Store, Fortinos, Freshmart, Loblaws, No Frills, Valu-Mart, Your Independent Grocer, Zehrs, Dominion, Red & White, Save Easy, Cash and Carry, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, AXEP, Group Distribution, Intermarché, Maxi & Cie, Maxi, Presto, Club Entrepôt, Provigo, Extra Foods, Shop Easy, Super Valu, and Westfair retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Loblaws Companies Ltd. (Brampton, ON) recalls Mixed Nuts (Product of USA; 454 g, bearing UPC 6 28721 20678 7; 1.36 kg, bearing UPC 0 33383 70401 2), due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The recalled nuts were distributed nationally in Real Canadian Super Store, Fortinos, Freshmart, Loblaws, No Frills, Valu-Mart, Your Independent Grocer, Zehrs, Dominion, Red & White, Save Easy, Cash and Carry, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Maxi & Cie, Maxi, Presto, Club Entrepôt, Provigo, Extra Foods, Shop Easy, Super Valu, Westfair, Affiliated Independents, and Quick Mart stores.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Ruris nv recalls Pommes de terre Annabelle Chair ferme ALDI (2.5 kg; Lot #5739/5765/5784/5793/5833) and Pommes de terre Annabelle D365 Delhaize Chair ferme (5 kg; Lot #5739/5765/5784/5793/5833), due to the presence of an elevated level of the herbicide fluazipop-P-butyl.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Urtekram Int A/S recalls Organic coconut oil (425 ml; Best before 28/9-2014 and 3/11-2014; Lot codes 28.09.2014 L21 and L21 03.11.2014), due to an unusual taste and smell.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): John K. Anastasopoulos & Son Ltd recalls Lily brand Natural Mineral Water (1.5L bottle; Lot #121107; Expiration date 7/11/13), due to contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Norway): The outbreak of Salmonella Mikawasima illnesses has increased to 13 confirmed cases in nine counties: Oslo (1 patient) Akershus (1), Vestfold (1), Aust-Agder (1), Vest-Agder (3) Telemark (1), Oppland (1 ), Hordaland (3) and Nordland (1). The source of the outbreak is still under investigation.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Lenard’s Pty Ltd. recalls various flavours and varieties of minced chicken products (sold unpackaged to consumers between 27-30 November 2012), due to the presence of foreign material (wood and metal). The recalled product was sold only in Lenard’s retail outlets in Western Australia.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Tri City Cheese and Meats (Kawkawlin, MI) recalls Troll Smokehouse Fully Cooked Jalapeño Vienna sausage products ( 1- and 2.5-lb Cryovac bags; Est 32015; Sell by 12/17/12 through 01/03/13), because they contain undeclared monosodium glutamate (MSG). The recalled product was distributed to retail establishments in Michigan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Veggie Patch recalls Veggie Patch Ultimate Meatless Burgers (9 oz; UPC 61012900211; Sell by date January 12, 2013), because of possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold at Stop & Shop, Giant Food Stores, Martin’s, and Giant of Maryland stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: Food City advises its customers that Hillshire Lil Smokies (12-14 oz) have been recalled. No additional information was provided by the retailer.
  • Outbreak Alert Final Update: CDC reports that the Salmonella Bredeney outbreak associated with contaminated peanut butter manufactured by Sunland, Inc. (Portales, NM) appears to be over. In total, 42 people were infected with the outbreak strain in 20 states. Ten people were hospitalized. FDA has suspended the company’s food facility registration, prohibiting Sunland from introducing food into commerce in the USA.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Pure Indulgent Foods Inc. recalls Flats by Pure Apricot Pecan Unique Savory Baked Crackers (170g; Code 5/30 13; UPC 8 73376 00303 2), because the product contains undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was sold through retailers in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: ERAA Supermarket Inc. recalls ERAA Jaggery Lump Brown Sugar (900g; Batch 06/12; Best before AUG 2013; UPC 8 901792 100911 and 8 901792 101321), due to contamination with unspecified extraneous material. The recalled product was sold through retailers in Ontario.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Food Safety Authority of Ireland warns consumers that Kupiec corn flour “gluten free” (400g; Product of Poland; Batch B184 PL; Best before 31/01/2013) was found to contain undeclared gluten. The product, which is known in Polish as Maka Kukurydziana, has been sold in stores across Ireland, mainly those selling Eastern European foods.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): SARL Fontanilles recalls Charcuterie Fontanilles brand of meat-based canned deli products (Expiry 2016), due to lack of product stability. The recalled products were sold in the département of Tarn after May 23, 2012. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of retailers that carried the recalled products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): La fromagerie Moléson recalls Le Capriglânois soft curd goat cheese, made from raw milk (80g; Lot # L224703 / L224935 / L225166 / L225436 / L226154; Expiry dates 6.12.2012 / 7.12.2012 / 10.12.2012 / 11.12.2012 / 14.12.2012), after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Norway): The number of illnesses due to Salmonella Mikawasima has risen to 12 cases in nine counties, including Oslo (1 patient) Akershus (1), Vestfold (1), Aust-Agder (1), Vest-Agder (3) Telemark (1), Oppland (1 ), Hordaland (2) and Nordland (1). All of the affected individuals are adults, most of them aged 20 – 50 years. Norway’s Public Health Institute is continuing its investigation into the source of the outbreak.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1658): Listeria monocytogenes in gorgonzola and mascarpone cheese cake from Italy; distributed to Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1659): Sulfathiazole and sulfadimidine in forest honey from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1660): Mercury in frozen slices of swordfish from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1661): Mercury in frozen sword fish from Spain; distributed to Germany and Italy.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Delin (Australia) Trading Pty Ltd. recalls Favor Swallow Bean Sauce (350g glass jar; Best before 18/09/14; Product of China) due to contamination with Bacillus cereus. The recalled product was sold in some Asian supermarkets in Victoria only.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): The New Zealand Herald reports that a ward has been closed at Hawke’s Bay Hospital due to an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea among staff and patients. Visitors have been urged to stay away.
