Possible Canadian Norovirus outbreak linked to imported raspberries

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation into the possible Norovirus contamination of products containing Individual Quick Frozen (IQF) raspberries.

At least one product recall has been triggered by findings emanating from a foodborne disease outbreak investigation.

In response to an inquiry from eFoodAlert, a CFIA spokesperson stated that the recall in question was associated with raspberries from Québec.

The Ministre d’Agriculture, Pêcheries et Alimentation de Québec (MAPAQ) has posted recall notices indicating the origin of the raspberries to be Chile.

As of June 5, 2019, the following recalls are in effect:

The current situation is reminiscent of a 2017 Norovirus outbreak that also was traced to imported IQF raspberries.

Between March 2017 and July 2017, the consumption of frozen raspberries imported from China was blamed for 615 confirmed cases of Norovirus in Québec. Many of the cases occured in seniors’ residences and child daycare centers.

Symptoms of Norovirus infection include nausea, vomiting and copious watery diarrhea, typically lasting from 24 to 60 hours in healthy adults.

Young children and the elderly are susceptible to severe dehydration. Approximately 1% of Norovirus victims may require hospitalization as a result of their illness.

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC reports 27 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium infections in 17 states linked to pet hedgehogs. Two people were hospitalized. Forty-two percent of the outbreak victims are children aged 12 or younger.

Food Safety Recall: Johnsonville, LLC. recalls Johnsonville JALAPEÑO CHEDDAR Smoked Sausage (14 oz. vaccuum-pack; Best by 06/09/2019) due to foreign matter (hard, green plastic) contamination.

Food Safety Recall: J Deluca Fish Company Inc recalls approximately 69,590 pounds of Siluriformes fish products (product of Vietnam) that were not presented for import re-inspection into the United States. The recalled items were shipped to distributors and retail locations nationwide.

Food Safety Recall: Perdue Foods LLC recalls approximately 31,703 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products due to foreign matter (pieces of bone) contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Marché Dunn recalls Saumon fumé / Smoked salmon (Product sold up to and including May 29, 2019; UPC 238807402806) and Sturgeon fumé / Smoked sturgeon (Product sold up to and including May 29, 2019; UPC 238806305405) because the items were processed and packaged under conditions that may compromise food safety.

Food Safety Recall: Étoile Waldman inc. recalls Organic sliced smoked salmon (Product sold up to and including May 29, 2019) because the product was processed and packaged under conditions that may compromise food safety.

Health Product Safety Recall: Konsar Future Nutrition Inc. recalls a range of natural health products, mainly vitamins and supplements for health and fitness, bodybuilding and weight management after Health Canada serious unsanitary conditions and quality control issues. The government has suspended the company’s site licence and all 101 of its product licences. Please refer to the Health Canada notice for additional details.

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: PHAC reports a new outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses affecting 11 individuals in British Columbia (2), Alberta (1), Ontario (2), Quebec (3), New Brunswick (1), Nova Scotia (1), and Prince Edward Island (1). One person has been hospitalized. The illnesses were linked to a frozen, raw breaded chicken product. On May 24th, Sofina Foods, Inc. recalled Compliments brand Chicken Strips – Breaded Chicken Cutlettes – Uncooked (907g; Best before November 24, 2019; UPC 0 55742 33687 0).
