United States

  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Price Chopper Apple Pie (8-inch; Purchased Oct 3 – Nov 3) and Price Chopper Pumpkin Pie (8-inch; Purchased Oct 3 – Nov 3), because the products are not up to quality standards.
  • Outbreak Alert: Thirty-five people fell ill with vomiting and diarrhea a day after eating lunch last week in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Pyle Center’s Alumni Lounge, according to an item in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: All The Best Fine Foods recalls its own brand of Maple Pecans (150g; UPC 20002954; Lot code 119061), due to the presence of undeclared wheat. As a result of a packaging error, the packages contain Maple Shortbread instead of Maple Pecans. The recalled product was distributed nationally.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Netherlands): Kruidvat and Prijsmepper recall Kinder Joy Chocolate Eggs (Bar code 80310891), because the product contains undeclared nuts.
  • Food Alert (Ireland): Diageo Ireland advises that two batches of Guinness 568ml brown crowned bottles (Lot codes L1277GD001 and L1290GD001) have been mislabelled. The labels carry incorrect UK units of alcohol (labeled as 1.8, whereas the labels should read 2.4). The product poses no health risk, but consumers may be mislead as to the amount of alcohol consumed.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1574): Escherichia coli in clams from Turkey; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1575): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked rainbow trout from Greece; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1576): Yeast in remoulade sauce from Denmark; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1577): Histamine in frozen sardine fillets from Tunisia; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1578): Escherichia coli in frozen mechanically separated poultry meat from Poland; distributed to Romania.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1579): Salmonella typhimurium in fish feed from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1580): Salmonella spp. in paan leaves from Bangladesh; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1581): Methomyl in fresh mint from Israel; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1583): Cadmium in chilled tiger prawns from Senegal; distributed to Germany.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Giant Eagle recalls Cut Out Cookies, 10-ct (UPC 28968500000; All Lots; All Date codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Food Recall: Hawaii Candy recalls Hawaii Candy Fortune Cookies (UPC 073366-12950), Petite Wafers (UPC 073366-12952), Sesame Wafers (UPC 073366-12954) and Ginger Wafers (UPC 073366-12955), because the products contain undeclared Yellow #6 as an ingredient.
  • Outbreak Alert: More than 175 children at the Pittsburgh Montessori PreK-8 in Friendship school (Pittsburgh, PA) became ill last week with suspected norovirus gastroenteritis. Seven teachers (nearly one-fourth of the staff) also were absent due to the same illness. The school building was closed on Friday for disinfection. Lab tests are under way to confirm the cause of the illness.
  • Outbreak Alert: Three cases of E. coli infection have been confirmed in Boone County, Missouri. Two more cases are under investigation. County public health officials say that there is no connection to the St. Louis outbreak. Two of the Boone County victims were hospitalized.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Boucherie Fairmount (Montréal, QC) recalls Csabai sausages, because the sausages were not stored in a manner to ensure their safety. The public is advised not to consume this product.
  • Food Safety Recall: CFIA announces the recall of Jones Hot Air Popcorn (2kg; Manufactured by Jones Popcorn), due to the insect contamination.
  • Cosmetic Product Safety Recall: ITN Food Corporation recalls Black Henna Cone and Red Henna Cone (Manufactured in Pakistan; all lots), because the products contain phenol and other phenolic compounds, which can produce chemical burns to the skin. The recalled products were sold at various ethnic stores in Ontario and Quebec from December 2010 to May 2011.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Colgate-Palmolive recalls Colgate Motion Electric Toothbrush (battery-operated), after receiving several reports that the toothbrushes had “exploded.” The company is no longer manufacturing this toothbrush.

Europe

  • Food Safety Alert (UK): The Food Standards Agency (FSA) warns the public that, since August, a high proportion of consignments of paan leaves – also known as betel leaves – imported from Bangladesh and India have been found to be contaminated with Salmonella. As paan leaves typically are chewed raw, this represents a risk of Salmonella food poisoning. At the request of FSA, local port authorities are sampling and testing all consignments of paan leaves presented for import.
  • Food Recall (Belgium): Colruyt and OKay recall several lots of Everyday U.H.T. milk, 1L boxes, including whole milk, part-skim milk and skim milk, following customer complaints concerning taste and odor. Please refer to the recall notice for details of the affected production lots.
  • Food Recall (Belgium): Carrefour recalls Carrefour Discount brand Whole Milk (1L carton; Lot #111678, 111724 and 111732), due to off-taste or unusual odor.
  • Food Advisory: Delhaize advises its customers that certain boxes of the following milk may, in time, develop an altered taste or odor, due to a sporadic technical malfunction at the manufacturer: Delhaize 365 Ecrémé lait (Lot 111891 and 111892; Expiry 28/01/2012).

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Singapore): The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore advises the public that Società cooperativa agricola G.M.G F. ar.l. dei F.lli Gaudiano, Italy, has, as a precautionary measure, initiated a market recall of all batches and sizes of olives stuffed with almonds dated from 2010 and 2011. This was because two cases of botulism found in Finland has been linked to the consumption of the olives. There is no import of the affected products into Singapore. Nevertheless, AVA advises consumers who have bought the implicated products, whilst overseas, to discard the products and not to consume them.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (New Zealand): Bon-Soy recalls Bon-Soy Phyto-Nutraceutical soy milk powder (500g; all batches) and Bon-Rice Phyto-Nutraceutical rice milk powder (450g; all batches), due to the presence of undeclared casein, a milk protein. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of stores where the products were sold.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Charlie’s Group Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Phoenix Ginger Beer (330ml; Best Before 22/08/12), Phoenix Creaming Soda (330ml; Best Before 22/08/12), Phoenix Cola Cluster Pack (4 x330ml; Best Before 22/08/12), Phoenix Orange Fizz (330ml; Best Before 23/08/12), Phoenix Sparkling Apple (300ml; Best Before 23/08/12), and Phoenix Sparkling Blood Orange (300ml; Best Before 23/08/12), because some of the bottles were inadequately pasteurized. As a result, the contents of some bottles may ferment, increasing the risk of shattering.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Australia): Colgate-Palmolive Pty Ltd recalls Savacol Antiseptic Mouth & Throat Rinse Alcohol Free chlorhexidine gluconate 2 mg/mL mouthwash bottle (manufactured by Gaba International AG Active, Switzerland; All unexpired batch numbers), due to microbial contamination.

  • Food Safety Recall: Windsor Quality Food Co. Ltd. (Los Angeles, CA) recalls Molly’s Kitchen Mini Chicken Pot Pie Empanadas (10-lb cases; Product code 953397; Best before August 30, 2012), because the product may contain pieces of plastic. The recalled empanadas were shipped to one foodservice distributor for further distribution nationwide.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Texas Department of State Health Services announces that all recreational and commercial oyster, clam and mussel harvesting in Texas coastal waters has been closed due to red tide.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Recall: Novartis Consumer Health recalls a number of Excedrin products, due to product mix-up occurrences, according to notices posted by Giant and Food City supermarekts.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns B & F Fish Market, LLC (Parsons, TN) that a June 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC (Moyle Springs, ID) that a June-July 2011 inspection of the company’s sprout growing facility subsequent to an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis revealed insanitary conditions and practices that may have contributed directly or indirectly to contamination of your sprouts with pathogens.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Snokist Growers (Yakima, WA) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s food processing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • Cosmetics Product Safety Recall: Purity Cosmetics (San Jose, CA) recalls 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow (Lot #1B11) after Pseudomonas luteola was found in a sample of the product. The recalled item was produced for Purity Cosmetics by Radical Cosmetics (New Brunswick, NJ) and was distributed to retail stores in California, Florida, New York, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Oregon, Minnesota, Virginia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Tennessee. Purity began shipping the product on or after March 7, 2011.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory has confirmed 28 cases of E. coli O157:H7 in and around St. Louis County. Testing of an additional 7 specimens is still in progress. Schnucks removed certain items from its salad bars company-wide, including from Logli and Hilander stores in Rockford, IL after several outbreak patients mentioned the chain.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Alimentation Gauthier & Frères enr/IGA (Shawinigan, QC) recalls several ground beef, ground veal, and ground pork products (packaged 30 octobre 2011), because they may be contaminated with metal particles.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sea World Fisheries Ltd. recalls Live Manila Clams (25-lb; Lot #V4218: Harvest date Oct 26, 2011; Harvest area 15-2 Savary Island, BC (Wild); Process date Oct 26, 2011), due to the presence of marine biotoxin. The recalled clams were distributed to the hotel/restaurant/institutional market in Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Les Aliments Aquafuchsia recalls Aquafuchsia Baby Onion Shoots (70g; Lot 279) and Aquafuchsia Alfalfa Sprouts (125g; Lot #285), due to microbiological spoilage.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Spar recalls tête pressée gantoise/Ghent head cheese? (UPC 5400210556307; Expiry date 14/11/2011), after Listeria is detected in a sample. The recalled product was sold in Spar stores, and in other stores supplied by Spar.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Carrefour recalls Lait entier Carrefour Discount/Carrefour Discount Whole Milk (1L carto; Lot #11678, 111724 and 111732; Best before dates 30/12/2011, 06/01/2012 and 07/01/2012), because milk may develop an altered taste or odor, due to a sporadic technical malfunction during manufacture.
  • Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): DEEN Supermarkets recalls DEEN Fuet Extra Dry Spanish Sausage (170g; Expiry 20/03/2012), due to potentially hazardous microbiological defects.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danish Supermarket recalls ATCO almonds (200g; Expiry 31/7-2012; Product of Germany), due to larvae infestation.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1533): Salmonella spp. in paan leaves from Bangladesh; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1536): Carbon monoxide treatment of chilled yellowfin tuna from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1539): Incorrect date code on chilled shredded duck kit from the United Kingdom; distributed to Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1541): Escherichia coli in green herbs from Vietnam; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1542): Salmonella spp. in fresh coriander from Vietnam; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1543): Leucomalachite green in live trout from Austria; distributed to the Czech Republic.

  • Food Safety Alert (Saudi Arabia): The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has prohibited the sale of Gaudiano Bio Olives after an alert was issued by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.
