  • Allergy Alert: Hannaford Supermarkets recalls Red Velvet Cake Truffle (UPC 20335800000) and Triple Chocolate Cake Truffle (UPC 20335700000) due to the presence of undeclared egg, peanuts, wheat, soy and tree nuts. The recalled product was distributed in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont.
  • Allergy Alert: Asia Cash & Carry Inc. (Maspeth, NY) recalls Nova Salted Biscuit (14.08 oz/400g paper box; Expiration dates March 2013, November 2013 and December 2013; Product of Bangladesh), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: S & P Company, Limited (Paramount, CA) recalls Su-non Crush Roasted Thai Red Pepper ‘Super Hot’ Flakes (10.58 oz; Bar code 659613000770), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in Los Angeles Area Grocery stores (between July of 2012 to October 2012) including Bell and Long Beach, in Rockford, IL, in Phoenix, AZ, in Omaha, NE and in Brooklyn, NY.
  • Food Safety Recall: Justin’s recalls various peanut butter products after receiving notification from their contract manufacturer, Fresca Foods, Inc. (Louisville, CO) that the products may contain peanut butter from Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. Please refer to the recall announcement for a detailed list of products and code dates. The items were distributed nationally to numerous supermarket chains and were available for purchase on the internet from 3/23/10 to 9/26/12.
  • Food Safety Recall: AdvancePierre Foods recalls select frozen products including Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, Peanut Butter and Jelly Graham Cracker sandwiches and Peanut Butter cup products (produced in Easley, SC), because the products contain peanut butter supplied by Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were manufactured between the dates of July 17, 2011 through May 18, 2012 and distributed nationwide through retail stores, food service, convenience stores and the USDA commodity foods programs
  • Food Safety Recall: Lin-Mar Partners, Inc. (Austin, TX) recalls Longhorn Roasted Peanut with Chocolate Energy Bars (UPC 8-57087-00301-7; Best by date 11/10/12) and Longhorn Peanut Butter Trail Mix Protein Bars (UPC 8-57087-00303-1; Best by date 11/11/12), because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed in Texas through Randall’s, Tom Thumb, HEB, University of Texas Coop, and Academy retail stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: JagRma LLC (San Diego, CA) recalls NuttZo Original (16 oz; UPC 894697002030; Best By 10/7/12 – 12/31/12), because the product may contain peanuts supplied by Sunland, and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed from October 2011 to February 2012 through natural grocery retail stores in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nevada, California, Arizona, Hawaii; and through mail order in 50 states.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that, as of October 11th, 20 people in 12 states and the District of Columbia were infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes associated with Frescolina Marte brand ricotta salata cheese imported from Italy. Nineteen of the 20 victims were hospitalized. Four people died and there was one miscarriage ending in death of the fetus.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the Salmonella Montevideo and Salmonella Hadar outbreaks associated with live poultry in backyard flocks appear to be over. A total of 93 people from 23 states and Puerto Rico were infected with Salmonella Montevideo; 21 people were hospitalized and one person died. A total of 46 people from 11 states were infected with Salmonella Hadar; 13 were hospitalized, and all survived.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Clark County Washington Public Health reports 15 confirmed and 44 probable cases of Salmonella linked to On the Border restaurant in Vancouver, WA. The source of the outbreak has not been determined.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc. (Toronto, ON) recalls Starbucks Protein Bistro Box kits (192g pkgs; UPC 7 62111 88794 8; Best before 12SE29 to 12OC07, inclusive), because the Bistro Box contains Justin’s brand Honey Peanut Butter Blend (0.5 oz pouch; UPC 894455000391; Best by between 07-14-13 and 08-30-13), which may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: G. Brandt Meat Packers Ltd. recalls Brandt Polish Ham (4 kg; Best before 2012 Oct 21, 2012 Oct 29, and 2012 Nov 04), due to contamination with Clostridium perfringens. The recalled product was sold in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that 15 cases of E. coli O157 illness have been linked to beef from XL Foods Inc. (Brooks, AB). Cases were confirmed in Alberta (7), Newfoundland and Labrador (1), Quebec (4) and British Columbia (3).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Stryhns A/S, Graasten Salater recalls Lunch Salad brand Russian Salad (200g plastic cups), because the product contains undeclared milk and soy.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Coöbra recalls Green Celery (Lot 2527), because the product contains excessive levels of dimethoate and cyhalothrine (lambda).
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Max Krone recalls Nordic Gourmet Crispbread (150g; Best before 1/12-2012 and 1/1-2013), because moths and larvae have been found in some individual packages.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Eliza Chocolate Wholesale ApS recalls Chokolatier nøddebar, milk and dark varieties (35g; All date codes), because moth larvae were found in some packages.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Løgismose Dairy A/S recalls Løgismose Organic Skyr, Natural (350g; Best before 23/10-2012), Løgismose Organic Skyr with raspberries, rhubarb and vanilla (250g; Best before 23/10-2012) and Løgismose Organic Skyr with mango, passion and ginger (250g; Best before 23/10-2012), due to a high level of yeast in the products.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Brasserie de Saint-Omer extends its recall of several brands of beer, as a limited number of bottles may contain small pieces of glass. Please refer to the recall notice for details of the recalled products, which were sold by Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco.
  • Outbreak Alert (France): Eighteen cases of food poisoning have been reported between September 21st and October 10th in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The cause of the poisonings was traced to contamination of organic buckwheat flour with datura, a wild plant that naturally contains high levels of  atropine and scopolamine. These alkaloid chemicals are toxic to humans.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Twenty-seven guests at the Bay Great Western Hotel in Oban have developed symptoms consistent with norovirus infection. The hotel remains open for business, but is working to contain the virus.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Wah Shun Medicine Limited recalls Tian Ma Toutong Wan (Batch #80090TR3; Manufactured in Mainland China), because the product contains approximately 1.6 times the permitted level of lead.
  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Peking Medicine Manufactory recalls Bak Foong Pills (Batch #AL0225), because the product contains approximately 1.7 times the permitted level of mercury.
  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Kin Lik Trading Company Limited recalls 24 brands of unregistered proprietary Chinese medicines.
  • Herbal Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health advises the public not to buy or consume the oral product known as Snake Powder Capsule for Rheumatism, as it may contain undeclared Western medicines, including piroxicam, dexamethasone, hydrochlorothiazide and cimetidine.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Roche Hong Kong Limited recalls Rocephin for Inj 250mg IM (HK-20182), Rocephin for Inj 500mg IM (HK-20187), Rocephin for Inj 500mg IV (HK-20188), Rocephin for Inj 1g IV (HK-20190), Rocephin for Inj 1g IM (HK-20192) and Rocephin for Inj 250mg IV (HK-52844) because of a stability issue.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Vaccine Recall (Australia): GlaxoSmithKline Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Infanrix hexa vaccine (Batch #A21CB144A, A21CB188D, A21CB188E, A21CB190A, A21CB197A and A21CB221B; Expiry 21 January 2014), because a surface in the area where one of the manufacturing steps for the vaccine takes place was found to be contaminated with a small amount of Bacillus cereus. No contamination was found either in the ingredients or in the vaccine itself.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration advises the public that Naturally Kouxan Best Slim Capsules contain the undeclared prescription drug sibutramine and should not be used.

  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Chicken Wyngz products recalled by Tyson Foods, Inc.
  • Food Safety Recall: Flying Food Group (Chicago, IL) recalls Starbucks Protein Bistro Box (6.8 oz; UPC 762111881502; Enjoy By Dates 8/10/12 – 10/6/12), because the product contains 0.5 oz single-serve Honey Peanut Butter squeeze packs that contain peanut butter recalled by Sunland due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recalled Bistro Boxes were distributed in CT, MA, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, GA, FL, IL, WI, MN, IN, TX, AZ, NV, CA.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dean Foods Company of California (Buena Park, CA) and Meadow Gold Dairy (Orem, UT) recall Albertsons Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream (1.5 qt/1.42L container; UPC 41163 45891; Best By or EXP dates from 4/6/2011 to 9/25/2013) and Albertsons Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream (1.5 qt/1.42L container; UPC 41163 45903; Best By or EXP dates from 3/26/2011 to 8/3/2013), because the products contain a peanut butter ingredient that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled produces were sold in Albertsons stores in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Washington.
  • Food Safety Recall: Four Seasons Dairy Inc. recalls Herring Fillets “Atlantic Recipe” in oil (16.66 oz/500g plastic tubs; Product of Ukraine; Expiration 12/11/12), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Velvet Ice Cream recalls Velvet Supreme Peanut Butter Cup (1/2 gal; UPC 70682 10119; Code #10181; Manufactured 6/30/2010), Velvet Peanut Butter Cup (3 gal; UPC 70682 10539; Code 10181; Manufactured 6/30/2010), Velvet Buckeye Classic (56 oz; UPC 70682 10038; Code 10193; Manufactured 7/12/2010), Velvet Buckeye Classic (3 gal; UPC 70682 10519; Codes 10193, 12207, 12227; Manufactured 7/12/2010, 7/25/2012, 8/14/2012, respectively) and Velvet Buckeye Classic (pints; UPC 70682 10423; Code 12251; Manufactured 9/07/2012), because the peanut products contained in the ice creams may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products are sold at convenience stores, small independent retailers and ice cream parlors in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fresh Express Incorporated (Charlotte, NC) recalls Fresh Express Hearts of Romaine Salad (18 oz pkg; Product code S270A24; Use by October 11), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Romaine Salad was distributed in AZ, AR, CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, LA, MN, MT, NV, NM, ND, OK, OR, TX, UT, WA, WI, WY.
  • Food Safety Recall: Oregon Ice Cream expands its earlier recall to include the following products that contain peanut butter that was supplied by Sunland, Inc., and which may be contaminated with Salmonella: Aldens Organic Peanut Butter n Chip Ice Cream (1.5 qts; UPC 0 72609 74191 2; Code date range 10060 -12261) and Cascade Glacier Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream (3 gal; UPC 0 72609 60082 0; Code date range 11101 – 12223).
  • Outbreak Alert: The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and local health departments in Gaston, Gleveland and Lincoln counties are investigating an outbreak of E. coli illnesses among attendees at the Cleveland County Fair. Eight children and 5 adults have developed symptoms; two were confirmed to be infected with E. coli O157:H7 so far.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC issues its final update on the outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections associated with Agricola Daniella brand mangoes imported from Mexico. A total of 127 people in 15 states were infected with the outbreak strain; 33 were hospitalized. There were no deaths. An additional 16 people in 3 states were infected with Salmonella Worthington, including one person who was infected with both types of Salmonella.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Clark County Public Health has confirmed 13 cases of Salmonella and an additional 33 probable cases among patrons of On the Border restaurant in Vancouver, WA. Anyone who ate at the restaurant between Sept. 20 and Oct 8 and is experiencing symptoms of Salmonella should contact a health care professional.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume certain products containing peanut butter that were sold under the Harry & David®, Wolferman’s®, Fairytale, and Justin’s brands, because the peanut butter used to manufacture these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were sold nationally in the USA and were available for purchase over the Internet. Please consult the recall notice for details.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns the public not to consume Fresh Express brand Hearts of Romaine Salad (Product of USA; 510g/18 oz pkgs; UPC 0 71279 26201 7; Production code S270A24; Best before OCT 11) because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, and may also have been distributed to other provinces and territories.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kellogg Canada Inc. recalls Kellogg’s Mini-Wheats Brown Sugar Flavour Cereal (400g, 510g, 850g, 1.3kg sizes; Best before 2013 AL 01 – 2013 JL 29) and Kellogg’s Mini-Wheats Original Frosted Cereal (400g, 510g, 850g, 1.3kg, 1.6kg sizes; Best before 2013 AL 01 – 2013 JL 29), because the products may be contaminated with fragments of flexible metal mesh. The recalled products were sold across Canada.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Finland): Kuopiolainen Siam Flower recalls Thai Dancer brand Pickled Garlic (737-g pack size; batch 11961; Best before 05/12/2014; Product of Thailand), because the product contains more than the maximum allowed concentration of sulphite.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Mikes Meats Pty Ltd. recalls Mikes Meats Prager Leg Ham (600-900g cryovac pack; Dates 14 NOV 2012 and 14/11/12), due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled product was sold from Mikes Meats retail stores and some other butchers in the ACT.

  • Allergy Alert: Tyson Foods, Inc. (Pine Bluff, AR) recalls 67,269 pounds of packages labeled as Honey BBQ Flavored Boneless Chicken Wyngz, due to the presence of undeclared milk, soy and egg. Due to a packaging error, Buffalo style Boness Chicken Wyngz were packaged in bags meant for the Honey BBQ Flavored product. The recalled products were manufactured on Aug 7 and 8, 2012 and distributed to retail stores nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bliss Unlimited, LLC (Eugene, OR) recalls Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (1 pt; UPC 8 96767 00121 9; Stamp #41-61; Date range Nov 11 2012 through Oct 24 2013), because the product contains peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationwide between November 2010 and December 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Falcon Trading Company, Inc./SunRidge Farms (Royal Oak, CA) recalls Sunridge Chocolate Brownie Squares (10 lb case; UPC 086700211168; All lot codes), Sunridge Chocolate Double Decker Chew (10 lb case; UPC 086700211175; All lot codes), Sunridge (labeled Sunland) Peanut Butter Crunchy with Salt – Organic (35 lb tub; UPC 086700161852; All lot codes) and Sunridge (labeled Sunland) Peanut Butter Creamy No Salt – Organic (35 lb tub; UPC 086700161869; All lot codes), because the products contain peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company recalls Belfonte Home Run Sundae (56 oz rectangular carton; UPC 83057-91023; Best by dates 04/08/2011, 05/07/2011, 06/03/2011, 06/08/2012, 03/13/2014, 04/26/2014, 06/21/2014, 07/27/2014) and Belfonte Mama’s Choice Reverse Peanut Butter Pie (56 oz rounded square container; UPC 83057-17033; Best by dates 07/15/2011, 10/02/2011, 12/02/2011, 02/09/2012, 04/06/2012, 06/02/2012), because the products contain peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were sold between April 2010 and October 2012 in retail and convenience stores in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
  • Food Safety Recall: Clemmy’s Ice Cream (Rancho Mirage, CA) recalls Clemmy’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip ice cream (1 pt container; UPC 8 94509 00231 9; Code date range 11038 – 12215; Best before 02/13 through 08/14), because the ice cream contains peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was sold nationwide through grocery stores beginning in March 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Smith Dairy Products Company recalls SMITH’s Peanut Butter Crunch Ice Cream (1.75 qt and ½-gal; UPC 70424 08139; Lots 060-10 through 155-12), Acme Peanut Butter Twist Ice Cream (½-gal; UPC 29313 46110; Lots 03/01/10 through 06/03/12), Ruggles Peanut Butter Crunch Ice Cream (3 gal; UPC 70424 08607; Lots 060-10 through 155-12) and Ruggles Peanut Butter Brownie Crunch (3 gal; UPC 70424 08639; Lots 060-10 through 155-12), because the products contain peanut butter candy pieces recalled by Pecan Deluxe (the peanut butter in these candy pieces was supplied by Sunland, Inc.) and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Michigan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nina International (Hyattsville, MD) recalls Nina International Ground Hot Pepper (5 oz; UPC 745851004004), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC through African and ethnic retail food stores. The contamination was discovered as a result of a routine testing program.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rich Products Corporation recalls Jon Donaire® Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Cake (UPC 049800626836; Best by October 5, 2010 – January 19, 2013) and TCBY® Peanut Buttery Fudge Deep Dish Frozen Yogurt Pie (Julian dates 14070048 – 14072156; Best by November 14, 2010 – March 1, 2013), because the products contain ingredients sourced from a supplier that used Sunland, Inc. peanuts, and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Jon Donaire® product was sold through in-store bakeries nationwide; the TCBY® product was sold exclusively to TCBY® stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: BGC Manufacturing recalls Goldenbrook Farms Peanut Butter Bash Ice Cream (½ gallon cartons; UPC 0009282530538) because the product contains peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was sold in Brookshire Grocery retail stores through Texas, Louisiana and Southern Arkansas between May 2010 and September 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Toft Dairy recalls Buckeye Bites Ice Cream (48 oz carton/ UPC 19473-00602 & 3-gal tub / Product code 874; Expiration dates March 14, 2013 or before), because the product contains a peanut butter base that was made using peanut butter from Sunland, Inc. and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed throughout Ohio and Southern Michigan.
  • Outbreak Alert (Vancouver, WA): Clark County Public Health is investigating eleven confirmed and five probable cases of Salmonella reported by patrons of On the Border restaurant (1505 SE 164th Ave., Vancouver, WA). Anyone who ate at the restaurant between September 20th and October 8th and is experiencing symptoms of salmonellosis should contact a health care provider.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Greek Diamond International recalls Greek Diamond brand Greek Honey Wild Flower Honey (1 kg; Lot 08112; Best before 21/03/2014; UPC 6 27763 10033 6), due to the presence of drug residues. The recalled product was sold in Quebec.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed a twelfth case of E. coli O157 linked to beef from XL Foods, Inc. Four provinces are affected: Alberta (7 cases), Newfoundland and Labrador (1 case), Quebec (3 cases) and British Columbia (1 case).

  • Food Safety Alert (India): BBC reports that authorities in Trivandrum, Kerala have shut down a KFC restaurant after a customer complained that he was served a meal contain live worms.
