United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA and CDC are investigating a multi-state outbreak of fifteen (15) Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses likely linked to consumption of Sun Sprouts brand raw alfalfa sprouts. Two people have been hospitalized. Confirmed cases were reported in Nebraska (8), Oklahoma (1) and South Dakota (6). The implicated alfalfa sprouts have been recalled (see recall notice, below).

Allergy Alert: Daiso California LLC recalls Tohato Nagewa Snack (27g & 73g; SKU #4901940112036 & 4901940112005) due to undeclared milk.

Allergy Alert: Garden of Light (dba Bakery On Main) recalls Topco/Full circle Organic Oat & Honey Granola (Best before 10/10/23; UPC 036800420397) and “Naturally Better” Organic Oats & Honey Granola (Best before 10/10/23; UPC 07880201130) due to undeclared almonds.

Food Safety Recall: Caesar’s Pasta, LLC recalls Orefresco and Caesar’s Pasta brands of Frozen manicotti, not ready-to-eat (10-lb bulk packs; Best by September 28, 2024) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled product was sold to various foodservice distributors, distributing to restaurants in the Philadelphia, PA; Harrisburg, PA; Southeastern NY State; Northeastern PA; and San Juan, PR markets, and did not enter retail commerce.

Food Safety Recall: SunSprout Enterprises recalls Sun Sprouts brand raw alfalfa sprouts (4-ounce clamshells and 2.5lb packages; Lots 4211, 5211, 3212, and 4212; Best by dates between 12/10/22 and 1/7/23) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was directly distributed to five foodservice and grocery customers in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa between late November and mid December 2022.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Company recalls Olivia & Leo Gourmet Treats brand Dark 55% Cacao Almond Bark (120g; Lot 2321; Best before 16 JL 2023; UPC 6 28634 07609 5) due to undeclared milk.

Europe

Allergy Alert (Denmark): Normal A/S recalls Milka Chips Ahoy (100g; All date codes) due to undeclared hazelnuts, milk, gluten and soy.

Allergy Alert (Denmark): Deli Drengene ApS recalls 16 Mini blinis (pack of 16 – 135g; Lots T1214A & T1216A; Best before 23/01/2023 & 25/01/2023, respectively) due to undeclared whole milk powder and cream.

Allergy Alert (UK): Iceland Foods recalls Mars Dessert Bar (600g; Best before 23 February 2024) due to undeclared peanut and egg.

Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Jumbo recalls Jumbo chou rouge aux pommes / Red cabbage with apple (750g; Lots 142329/10:14/BGL & 142329/18:24/BGL; Expiry date 30/11/2024) due to foreign matter contamination (small pieces of glass).

Food Safety Recall (France): NESTLE HEALTH SCIENCE FRANCE NHS recalls Clinutren Dessert HPHC+ 2KCal, vanilla flavour (4 x 200g; Lot 23230810C2; Best before 16/08/2023) due to a portion of the lot (Production time stamp 10H52 and 11H17) being out of specification.

Food Safety Recall (France): DPAP recalls Dom Petroff brand tartare de saumon fumé à la truffe noire / Smoked salmon tartare with black truffles (Sold from 22/11/2022 to 29/12/2022) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Food Safety Recall (Germany): Voelkel GmbH Fruchtsäfte Gemüsesäfte recalls FÜR Kurkuma Ingwer Shot, demeter / Turmeric-Ginger shot (60 ml; Lot 94470; Best before 27.03.2024) due to foreign matter contamination (piece of glass).

Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): Auchan recalls Dom Petroff brand tartare de saumon fumé à la truffe noire / Smoked salmon tartare with black truffles (140g; Lots 2325, 2332, 2360, 2321 & 2361; Use by 12/12/2022, 19/12/2022, 16/01/2023, 16/01/2023 & 17/01/2023, respectively) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): Jumbo Supermarkten recalls Jumbo Rode Kool met Appel Blokjes / Red cabbage with apple cubes (750g; Expiry date 30-11-2024) due to foreign matter contamination (small pieces of glass).

OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC reports 13 cases of Salmonella Muenster infections in 8 states linked to pet bearded dragons. Seven people have been hospitalized.

OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC reports 32 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium infections in 17 states linked to pet hedgehogs. Five people have been hospitalized.

Food Safety Alert: The Rhode Island Department of Health warns the public to avoid juices, smoothies, and sea moss gel purchased from Health is Wealth Nutrition Center located at 1674 Cranston Street in Cranston because inadequate processing of these products has made them susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum.

Food Safety Recall: Country Fresh recalls a limited quantity of watermelon chunks from select Walmart and RaceTrac stores due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT FINAL UPDATE: PHAC reports that the Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to red onions imported from the United States appears to be over. Between mid-June and late August, there were 515 confirmed cases of salmonellosis in British Columbia (121), Alberta (293), Saskatchewan (35), Manitoba (26), Ontario (14), Quebec (25) and Prince Edward Island (1). Seventy-nine individuals were hospitalized and three people died, but Salmonella did not contribute to the cause of these deaths, according to PHAC.

Food Safety Recall Update: Sunsprout Natural Foods recalls Sunsprout brand Micro – Greens, Alfalfa (100g; All best before dates up to and including BBOCT13; UPC 0 57621 13511 6) due to possible Salmonella contamination. This recall notice has been update to indicate that the recalled product was distributed in Nova Scotia.

Allergy Alert (Germany): Günthart & Co. KG recalls Blüten, dunkle Schokolade 3D / Dark chocolate flowers (Best before 13.12.2021) due to undeclared casein and lactose.

Food Safety Recall (Netherlands): Albert Heijn recalls AH runderhamburger / beef burger (2-pack; Expiry date 25 september 2020) due to E. coli contamination.

OUTBREAK UPDATE: Salmonella infections across Ontario linked to alfalfa sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts produced by Sunsprout Natural Foods of Brantford, Ontario have caused 37 people to be infected with Salmonella, according to a spokesperson with Ontario’s Ministry of Health.

Infections have been reported from 19 of Ontario’s 34 public health units, and the cases are scattered across the province.

Four people have been hospitalized.

Sunsprout has initiated a series of recalls since August 11th. The following recalled products were distributed only in Ontario:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

Ontarians are encouraged to refer to the recall notice posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website and follow the advice provided.

a. Ontarians are reminded to check their fridges and freezers for the recalled product and if any is found, it is recommended that it be thrown out right away

b. Individuals are encouraged to visit Health Canada’s Food Safety and You website for additional resources/tips on food safety and safe food handling, particularly individuals at high risk for serious health effects from foodborne illness (young children, seniors, or people with weak immune systems)

c. It is important for Ontarians to remember, even when not eating out regularly, foods purchased and brought into the home can be contaminated and cause illness

i.    All fruits and vegetables should be washed

ii.   Clean counters and cutting boards

iii.  Keeping cold foods cold and hot foods hot

iv.   Cook foods to appropriate internal temperature

v.    Reduce cross contamination by keeping raw foods separate from ready to eat foods and foods that have already been washed and heated, washing hands regularly and cleaning food contact surfaces between use.
