Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT: The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reports eight cases of Salmonella Typhimurium infections in British Columbia (5), Alberta (2), and Yukon (1). The illnesses are linked to exposure to Paws Up! and Western Family brands of pig ear dog treats. Three individuals have been hospitalized and one person has died. The supplier, Master’s Best Friend, has issued a Notice of Stop Sale for the implicated products, which were sold at Canadian Tire and Save-On-Foods stores.

Allergy Alert: Loblaw Companies Ltd. recalls President’s Choice brand Maple Apple flavour Seasoned Pork Loin Roast (730g; Best Before 2020 OC 13; UPC 0 60383 20663 5) due to undeclared mustard.

Food Safety Recall: Érablière Godbout recalls Érablière Godbout brand Sauce spaghetti (500 ml and 1 L; All units where the label does not mention “Keep Refrigerated”) because the product may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum.

Food Safety Recall (Italy): AZ. AGR. ARMANNI ANGELO recalls AZ. AGR. ARMANNI ANGELO brand formaggio a latte crudo – stracchino / raw milk cheese (Lot #06/06/2020) due to shigatoxin-producting E. coli contamination.

Food Safety Recall (UK): Lidl GB recalls Cologran Stevia sweetener tablets (100 tablets; Batch code L 91424 C; Best before end December 2022) because aspartame is not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk to sufferers of phenylketonuria (PKU).

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC reports 869 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport infections linked to consumption of onions produced by Thomson International, Inc. (Bakersfield, CA). Infections have been reported in 47 states, and 116 of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized.

Allergy Alert: Faribault Foods Inc recalls PROGRESSO ORGANIC CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP (14-oz cans; BestByMAY262022 printed on the can bottom; Best by 09JUN2022 on product case) due to undeclared milk, soy, beef and pork.

United States

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC has received reports of 396 Salmonella Newport infections in 34 states. Fifty-nine of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized. According to FDA, the outbreak is probably linked to consumtion of red onions supplied by Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, CA. Thomson has informed FDA that the company will be recalling all varieties of onions that could have come in contact with potentially contaminated red onions. This includes red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. Consumers, retailers and food service establishments are advised to avoid serving or eating any onions supplied by Thomson International.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTE) beef and chicken taquitos and chimichangas products containing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated diced green chilies that have been recalled by the producer, Sun Valley Foods, due to concerns that the products may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically hard plastic. OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: PHAC has received reports of 114 Salmonella Newport infections in British Columbia (43), Alberta (55), Manitoba (13), Ontario (2), and Prince Edward Island (1). Sixteen of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized. PHAC and CFIA report that the outbreak is probably linked to red onions imported into Western Canada by Sysco. Allergy Alert: Metro Ontario Inc. recalls Selection brand Chocolate Drink Mix (425g; All Best Before dates up to and including 2021 OC 31 A; UPC 0 59749 96229 2) due to undeclared milk.

Food Safety Recall: Sysco recalls IMPERIAL FRESH brand Red Onions – Jumbo (10-lb and 25-lb bags; Product codes 8399925 & 8313967, respectively; All products imported since May 24, 2020; Product of USA), as the onions have been identified as the probable cause of an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections in five provinces. The recalled products were sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Western Ontario.
