United States

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC has received reports of 396 Salmonella Newport infections in 34 states. Fifty-nine of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized. According to FDA, the outbreak is probably linked to consumtion of red onions supplied by Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, CA. Thomson has informed FDA that the company will be recalling all varieties of onions that could have come in contact with potentially contaminated red onions. This includes red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. Consumers, retailers and food service establishments are advised to avoid serving or eating any onions supplied by Thomson International.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTE) beef and chicken taquitos and chimichangas products containing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated diced green chilies that have been recalled by the producer, Sun Valley Foods, due to concerns that the products may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically hard plastic. Allergy Alert: SmithFoods Inc. recalls three flavors of Earth Grown Vegan Non-Dairy Almond Based Frozen Desserts Earth Grown Vegan Non-Dairy Almond Based Frozen Desserts due to undeclared cashews. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: JBS Food Canada ULC recalls approximately 38,406 pounds of boneless beef head meat products that were not presented for import re-inspection into the United States. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

 

Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: PHAC has received reports of 114 Salmonella Newport infections in British Columbia (43), Alberta (55), Manitoba (13), Ontario (2), and Prince Edward Island (1). Sixteen of the outbreak victims have been hospitalized. PHAC and CFIA report that the outbreak is probably linked to red onions imported into Western Canada by Sysco. Allergy Alert: Metro Ontario Inc. recalls Selection brand Chocolate Drink Mix (425g; All Best Before dates up to and including 2021 OC 31 A; UPC 0 59749 96229 2) due to undeclared milk.

Food Safety Recall: Sysco recalls IMPERIAL FRESH brand Red Onions – Jumbo (10-lb and 25-lb bags; Product codes 8399925 & 8313967, respectively; All products imported since May 24, 2020; Product of USA), as the onions have been identified as the probable cause of an outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections in five provinces. The recalled products were sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and North Western Ontario.

Food Safety Recall: SJ Fine Foods Ltd. recalls Grimm’s Fine Foods brand Grimm’s Bavarian Bacon & Cheddar Smokies (450g; Best before Best Before 2020SE04; UPC 0 55898 14165 6) due to foreign matter (pieces of metal) contamination.

Allergy Alert (France): Industry recalls ARO brand Ail semoule fine / fine garlim semolina (1 Kg; Lot #19317) due to undeclared peanuts.

OUTBREAK ALERT (JORDAN): According to a report in The Jerusalem Post, one child is dead and 700 were poisoned after consuming spoiled shwarma from a food stand in Amman, Jordan.

Allergy Alert (Israel): Alpha Mega Food Ltd. recalls Oatmeal Cookies Sweetened with Fructose (250g; Best before 19.11.2020 & 02.10.2020; Product of Russia) due to undeclared sesame.

OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC, FDA and the Pennsylvania Department of Health report 11 confirmed cases of Salmonella Javiana illness associated with consumption of Tailor Cut Produce Fruit Mix in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. At least 20 additional cases are under investigation. See below for a link to the product recall.

OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC, FDA and their Canadian counterparts are investigating a cross-border outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses linked to Fresh Express Sunflower Crisp Chopped Salad Kits. Eight confirmed illnesses have been reported from 3 US states. Please see below for a link to the product recalls.

Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT: PHAC and CFIA are investigating an outbreak of 24 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Ontario (11), Quebec (3), New Brunswick (4), Nova Scotia (4), Prince Edward Island (1), and Newfoundland and Labrador (1). The outbreak has been linked to consumption of Fresh Express brand Sunflower Crisp Chopped Salad Kits. Additional outbreak cases have been reported in the USA (see link, above). OUTBREAK ALERT: PHAC is investigating an outbreak of 92 Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses across Canada linked to contact with pet snakes, pet rodents and feeder rodents. Illnesses have been reported from British Columbia (4), Ontario (16), Quebec (52), New Brunswick (9), Nova Scotia (5) and Newfoundland and Labrador (6).

Allergy Alert: Sobeys Inc. recalls Pete’s Fine Foods brand Large Cranberry Vanilla Cardamom Granola (500g; Best Before: 2020.JA.20; UPC 0 202638 212996) and Pete’s Fine Foods brand Small Cranberry Vanilla Cardamom Granola (85g; Best Before: 2020.JA.20; UPC 0 202631 702500) due to  undeclared pecans.

Food Safety Recall: Industry recalls Fresh Express brand Sunflower Crisp Chopped Kit (315g; All packages bearing a Best Before dates up to and including 07DE19,  and a lot code beginning with “Z”, and indicating “Salinas” as a source of Romaine lettuce) due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination.
