FDA, CDC investigating Salmonella outbreak linked to shell eggs

Raw shell eggs from Gravel Ridge Farms (Cullman County, Alabama) are being blamed for 14 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses in Tennessee and Alabama according to reports from FDA and CDC.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from July 10, 2018 to August 7, 2018; two victims were hospitalized.

Thirteen of the 14 outbreak patients reported eating restaurant dishes made with eggs. FDA and state partners traced the source of the shell eggs supplied to these restaurants to Gravel Ridge Farms.

On September 8th, Gravel Ridge Farms recalled Gravel Ridge Farms Large Cage Free Eggs (Single Dozen and 2.5 Dozen Flats; Use by 7/25/18 through 10/3/18; UPC 7-06970-38444-6), and has ceased the production and distribution of the product while FDA and the company investigate the source of the contamination.

Recalled product was distributed between 6/25/2018 and 9/6/2018. These products were packaged in a cardboard container and sold primarily in restaurants and retail stores in AL, GA, and TN.

Consumers who have purchased these products should return them to the store for refund or discard the product immediately. If any consumers have Gravel Ridge Farms eggs in their refrigerator, they should be discarded, regardless of the date stamped on the package. OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Reading infections linked to raw turkey products from a variety of sources. The outbreak strain has demonstrated resistance to multiple antibiotics. Ninety cases have been reported from 26 states; 40 of the outbreak victims were hospitalized. The outbreak strain has been identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products, and live turkeys. Two ill people lived in a household where raw turkey pet food was fed to pets.

Public Health Alert: USDA alerts the public not to consume HUNGRY MAN CHIPOTLE BBQ SAUCED BONELESS CHICKEN WYNGZ frozen microwavable dinners (15.25-oz.; Best by 9/6/19) because the product contains whey powder that has been recalled by the manufacturer (Associated Milk Producers, Inc.) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The frozen dinners were shipped to retail locations in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Allergy Alert: GiftTree recalls Sherman Candy Caramels due to undeclared pecans, walnuts, almonds and peanuts. The recalled product was sold online in the several Gift Baskets. Please refer to the recall notice for complete details on the affected products.

Allergy Alert: Shearer’s Foods, LLC recalls multiple lot codes of Food Lion brand Dill Pickle Flavored Potato Chips due to undeclared milk. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected lot codes, which were distributed to Food Lion stores in NC, SC, GA, PA, KY, VA, TN, DE, MD, and WV between Dec 1st, 2017 and July 19, 2018.

Food Safety Recall: Flowers Foods, Inc. recalls Swiss Rolls sold under the brand names Mrs. Freshley’s, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker’s Treat, Market Square, and Great Value, distributed nationwide, and Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, due to the potential presence of Salmonella in an ingredient, whey powder. Food Safety Recall: Food Lion recalls Food Lion Swiss Rolls (13 oz; UPC 3582609277) due to possible presence of Salmonella in one of the ingredients (whey powder). The recalled product was sold only in select Food Lion stores in North Carolina and Virginia.

Food Safety Recall: H-E-B recalls two variety packs of Creamy Creations ice cream and sherbets in 3-ounce cups due to broken metal found in processing equipment during routine maintenance. Please refer to the recall notice for details on the affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Win Opportunity Knocks, doing business as Ottomanelli Wholesale Meats Inc. recalls approximately 6,020 pounds of fresh and frozen, raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O45, O103 and O145. Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: King Bio recalls four lots of Aquaflora Candida HP9, Lymph Detox, and Baby Teething liquids due to contamination with Pseudomonas Brenneri, Pseudomonas Fluroescens and Burkholderia Multivorans. OUTBREAK ALERT: Federal and provincial agencies are cooperating to investigate outbreaks of Salmonella Enteritidis infections in British Columbia (3), Alberta (1), and Ontario (3). Illnesses have been linked through lab tests to consumption of frozen raw breaded chicken, specifically No Name Chicken Nuggets and unbranded $10 Chicken Fries. One person has been hospitalized. Food Safety Recall: Loblaw Companies Limited recalls No Name Chicken Nuggets (907g; Outer package code 2019 MA 15; Inner package code 1358M; UPC 0 60383 89685 0) due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was supplied to consumers nationwide. This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak.

Outbreak Alert Update: CDC has update its advice against consuming Kellogg’s Honey Smacks Cereal to include all package sizes and date codes.

Outbreak Alert: CDC is investigating an outbreak of Cyclosporiasis linked to consumption of vegetable trays produced by Del Monte Fresh Produce and distributed in Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond’s, Sentry, Potash, Meehan’s, Country Market, FoodMax Supermarket, and Peapod stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Allergy Alert: Golden Star Wholesale recalls AL Reef  Dried Apricots Sour (12 oz; uncoded) due to undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was sold via retail stores in MI, NY,MN,KY,WI,FL,NC,VA,OR,MA,OH,TX,MO between November 2017 and May 2018.

Food Safety Recall: NOW Health Group, Inc. recalls NOW Real Food® Zesty Sprouting Mix (16 oz.; Lot #3031259 and 3038165; Best by dates 12/20 and 01/21, respectively; UPC 733739072719) due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to the manufacturer’s recall notice, “Evidence of potential contamination was implicated in ongoing FDA and CDC investigations into multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections, of which the clover seed supplier was notified.” The recalled product was distributed online and in retail stores across the USA since December 2017, and also was exported to Canada.

Food Safety Recall: Texas Natural Meats recalls Green Field Farms Rogers Texas Ground Beef (1-lb bags; Expiry 08.08.2020) due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O103. The recalled product was sold at a farmers’ market in Roger, Texas.

Outbreak Alert Update: PHAC reports the number of Salmonella cases linked to frozen, raw breaked chicken has expanded to include 68 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis illness in nine jurisdictions: British Columbia (8), Alberta (9), Manitoba (9), Ontario (15), Quebec (23), New Brunswick (1), Nova Scotia (1), Newfoundland and Labrador (1), and the Northwest Territories (1).

Allergy Alert: Kehar Foods International Ltd. recalls KFI Premium Quality Foods Curry Powder (100g; Expiry Dec 2018; UPC 8 20103 22525 0) due to undeclared mustard. The recalled product was supplied to retailers in British Columbia.
