  • Outbreak Alert: Six-year-old boy in Millbury, Massachusetts succumbed to hemolytic uremic syndrome after contracting E. coli infection from an unknown source. Worcester Public Health officials are investigating, according to a report in the Boston Herald.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: OS Distribution recalls Nona Pudding (85g; Honeydew, Mango and Coconut flavors; All codes) due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed in British Columbia.

  • Oral Drug Product Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to consume the oral drug Jin Tan 1-Ching-Sung Laxative Tablets, as it may contain the banned Western drug diacetyldiphenolisatin (also known as oxyphenisatin).

  • Allergy Alert: Oskri Corp. (Lake Mills, WI) recalls Peach Granola (3.53-oz bags; UPC 666016111743; P 3/3/12; EXP 9/9/13; LOT 75), due to the presence of undeclared cashews. The recalled product was distributed nationally to travel plazas and retail stores.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Casco Inc. recalls GTC Nutrition Purimune Galactooligosaccharides (20kg; Lots 0000117369, 0000117370, and 0000117371), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was distributed to warehouses in Ontario and Quebec.

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Marsh Butcheries recalls Marsh Butcheries Chorizo Sausages (350g-400g vacuum-packs; Use by 06 JUN 12), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold at Marsh Butcheries retail stores in Stratford, Cairns, QLD.

  • Food Safety Recall: Bumble Bee, Inc. recalls Bumble Bee Fancy Whole Oysters (8-oz can; all lot codes; UPC 86600-70030), due to an FDA evaluation of the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program found significant deficiencies in Korean shellfish growing areas.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall: Tyco Healthcare/Covidien recalls SYR MONJ KEN 29G, Product ID #8881511344, Product ID #8881511336, and Product ID #8881511144, due to a molding issue that can allow the safety shield to separate from the syringe, exposing the needle, which could potentially result in a needle stick. Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Pet Food Safety Recall (Singapore): The Agri-food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) advises consumers that Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc. (El Cajon, CA) has recalled one batch of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and one batch of WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food, due to potential Salmonella contamination.   • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection involving an 84-year old woman. The woman was injured while scraping fish on May 23rd.
  • Outbreak Alert (Philippines): The Provincial Health Office in Bataan is investigating three separate illness outbreaks: complaints of diarrhea among 117 inmates of Bataan District Jail, a cluster of 25 cases of food poisoning among people who ate egg rolls during a funeral in Limay, and 97 people who suffered food poisoning after consuming “dirty” ice cream in Balanga.
