United States

  • Allergy Alert: Associated Milk Producers Inc. (New Ulm, MN), in cooperation with Gordon Food Service, recalls GFS Lemon Pudding (113 oz cans; UPC 9390110676; Lot #3T12354C), due to undeclared milk. The recalled pudding was distributed in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: The Kroger Company reports that Taylor Farms’ Simple Truth brand Organic Baby Spinach (5 oz tray; UPC 0-11110-91128-5; Best by 2/24/2013), recalled due to Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) contamination, was distributed to Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, as well as to King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4Less, FoodsCo, QFC and Smith’s stores. Wegmans reports that none of the recalled Taylor Farms spinach was sold in Wegmans stores.
  • Food Recall: Bi-Lo advises its customers that Manischewitz Coconut Macaroons (10 oz; UPC 7270000090; Item code 500728; Best by 8/12/13, 8/13/13 and 8/14/13) were recalled by the manufacturer.
  • FDA Enforcement Action: US Marshals, acting on behalf of FDA have seized tainted dietary supplements from Globe All Wellness, LLC (Hollywood, FL), because the seized products may contain sibutramine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in the obesity drug Meridia, which was withdrawn from the US market after clinical data demonstrated that the drug increased the risk of heart attach and stroke.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC reports that 124 persons have been infected with a single strain of Salmonella Heidelberg (the outbreak strain) since June 4, 2012. Illnesses have been reported from 12 states, including Washington (56 cases) and Oregon (38 cases). The other 10 states have not been identified, as CDC has not yet determined how the illnesses are linked to the outbreak. Cases in Oregon and Washington appear to be linked to the consumption of chicken; these states have identified Foster Farms brand chicken as the most likely source, based on patient reports and the detection of the outbreak strain from samples of Foster Farms raw chicken.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Delft Blue, division of Grober Inc. (Cambridge, ON) recalls Compliments brand Breaded Veal Cutlettes (680g pkgs; UPC 0 55742 33693 1; All best before codes) due to undeclared mustard. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.

  • Allergy Alert: Domega NY International Co. Ltd. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Green Day brand Dried Coconut (3 oz/85 clear plastic bag; Exp 09/13/2014; UPC 6 950296 800744; Product of China) due to undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was sold in New York City.
  • Food Safety Recall: ZIP International Group LLC recalls Astrakhansky Lesh Dry Salted Fish (bream) Eviscerated (14.2 oz; UPC 835856001228; Product of Russia; Distributed by East Coast Foods Inc., Brooklyn, NY) because the product was found to be uneviscerated and has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled product was supplied to retail stores and wholesalers in September 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Taylor Farms Retail, Inc. (Salinas, CA) recalls Central Market Organics brand Organic Baby Spinach (16 oz tray; UPC 0 41220-18534-4; Best by 2/24/2013; Distributed in Texas), Full Circle Organic brand Organic Baby Spinach (16 oz tray; UPC 0-36800-28875-1; Best by 2/24/2013; Distributed in California), Marketside Organic brand Organic Baby Spinach (5 oz tray; UPC 6-81131-32898-2; Best by 2/24/2013; Distributed in AR, CO, LA, NM, OK, TX), Simple Truth Organic brand Organic Baby Spinach (5 oz tray; UPC 0-11110-91128-5; Best by 2/24/2013; Distributed in AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, LA, MO, MT, NM, OR, TX, UT, WA, WY), and Taylor Farms Organic brand Organic Baby Spinach (16 oz tray; UPC 0-30223-04780-3; Best by 2/24/2013; Distributed in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IN, IL, KS, KY, LA, MD, MO, MN, MS, MT, NC, NE, NM, NV, NJ, NY, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, WY), because the products may be contaminated with Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli. The recalled products were supplied to Walmart, Sam’s ClubWinco, Food 4 Less, FoodsCo and Ralphs, and may also have been distributed to other retailers.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rich’s Products recalls All Natural Ancient Grain Bread Dough (13.8 oz; UPC 49800 08712; Lot Nos. 77002209 through 77003302) due to possible presence of metal mesh fragments.
  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper recalls Price Chopper Fresh Bakery items containing raisins (purchased between December 14, 2012 and February 8, 2013), due to the presence of naturally occurring foreign matter in the raisins.   • Food Recall: Food City alerts consumers to a recall of Food Club Pineapple Tidbit Cups (4/4oz). Consumers may contact the manufacturer at 1-888-423-0139 for more details.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to ground beef now includes a total of 18 persons from Arizona (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (2), Michigan (9) and Wisconsin (5). Seven people have been hospitalized; there are no fatalities.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Something Special Deli-Foods Ltd. recalls Something Special Gourmet Antipasto Vegetarian Tangy Vegetables (250g; UPC 0 58353 20505 4; Best before 16.JAN.2015; Code 2A3016), due to undeclared fish. The recalled product was shipped to warehouses in British Columbia and Ontario.
  • Food Recall: Farm Boy Inc. recalls Farm Boy Leek & Potato Soup (946 mL; Best before JAN. 31) due to contamination with ‘non-harmful’ extraneous material.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (France): La société Candessoussens François recalls Maison Lasserre meat-based canned foods, including rillettes de canard, gésiers and foie gras (Produced on or after July 1, 2012), due to inadequate product stability. The recalled products were supplied to local markets (Peyrehorade, Hagetmau) in Landes.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Norway): Mattilsynet reports that the source of the outbreak strain of Salmonella Mikawashima, which infected 13 people in nine different regions in November 2012, was never found.

  • Allergy Alert: DZH Import & Export Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) recalls Mountains Dried Mushroom (1.23 oz/35g plastic tray; Best before NOV 30, 2013; UPC 6931653104064; Product of China), due to undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was sold in New York City.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Genesis Herb Company, L.L.C. (Monroeville, OH) that a May-July 2012 inspection of the company’s Canton dietary supplement manufacturing facility revealed significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns W.H. Walker & Sons, Inc. (Clintondale, NY) that a September 2012 inspection of the company’s juice processing facility found serious deviations from the FDA’s juice processing regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns M.D.R. Fitness Corp (Sunrise, FL) that a July-August 2012 inspection of the company’s facility revealed a failure to comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Scilabs Nutraceuticals Inc. (Irvine, CA) that a July-August 2012 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing facility found serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Gills Onions, LLC (Oxnard, CA) that a July 5, 2012 and Ausut 27, 2012 collection of samples yielded isolates of Listeria monocytogenes that are indistinguishable from each other by PFGE (genetic fingerprint) analysis.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Consolidated Marketing Unlimited, Inc. (Sunrise, FL) that an April-May 2012 inspection of the company’s facility found serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice in the Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Terra International Food Inc. recalls Rising Sun Farms Lemon Thyme Balsamic Dressing (354mL; Best before 06/29/16; UPC 0 18646 00068 1), due to undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was supplied to retailers in Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba.
  • Allergy Alert: Yum Yum Food (Toronto, ON) recalls Yum Yum Food Shrimp Wonton (200g; UPC 8 30121 10015 6) and Yum Yum Food Shrimp Dumpling (170g; UPC 8 30121 10016 3) due to undeclared egg and milk. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Sweden): Findus withdraws Lasagna (375g pouch; Part #63957) after test results show that the product contained horse meat.
  • Enforcement Action (UK): Food Standards Agency (FSA) raids Peter Boddy Licensed Slaughterhouse (Todmorden, West Yorkshire), which is believed to have supplied horse carcasses to Farmbox Meats Ltd. (Llandre, Aberystwyth), which also was raided as part of the investigation. FSA has suspended operations at both plants, detailed all meat found and seized paperwork, including customer lists.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0178): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of wet salted cod fillets from the Faroe Islands; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0179): Aflatoxins in maize from Greece; distributed to Cyprus.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0181): Aflatoxins in almond powder from Ghana; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0182): Salmonella enteritidis in frozen beef trimmings from Poland; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0183): Salmonella in pasteurized cow milk cheese from France; distributed to Belgium and France.
