(Parent of Bimbo Bakeries companies) recalls Thomas’ Bagels (1 lb 4 oz; various varieties; Best by JAN 18 to JAN 27, inclusive; Distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee), Sara Lee Deluxe Bagels (20 oz; various varieties; Best by JAN 18 to JAN 27, inclusive; Distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee), Publix Premium Bagels (20 oz; various varieties; Best by JAN 18 to JAN 27, inclusive; Distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee) and Weight Watchers 6 Original Bagels (15 oz; Best by JAN 18 to JAN 27, inclusive; Distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee), due to possible presence of metal fragments resulting from a faulty manufacturing part. Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Peak Performance Products Inc. (Toronto, ON) recalls Dymatize Nutrition brand Elite Gourmet Cookies & Cream Bar (42.5g & 85g; Lot Code BB SEP 2013 12200A and BB JAN 2014 12310A, respectively), Dymatize Nutrition brand Elite Gourmet Fudge Brownie Bar (42.5g; Lot code BB OCT 2013 12244A) and Dymatize Nutrition brand Elite Gourmet Fudge Brownie Bar (85g; Lot codes BB MAY 2013 12084A and BB SEP 2013 12199A), due to undeclared peanuts. The recalled products were distributed nationally.
  • Allergy Alert: Heidelberg Foods Ltd. (Est 644) recalls Noah Martin’s Black Forest Salami (variable kg; Sold up to and including January 11, 2013) and Noah Martin’s Black Forest Salami (1.5 (min.) kg; Best before 2013 MR 07, 2013 JN 27 and 2013 NO 13), due to undeclared mustard. The recalled products were supplied to retailers, hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fromagerie Bergeron Inc. recalls Fromagerie Bergeron Brins de Gouda Firm Unripened Cheese (500g; Best before 2013 JA 29; Lot 13-0065 & 13-0066; UPC 062036020506) and Fromagerie Bergeron Le Populaire Firm Unripened Cheese (675g; Best before 2013 AV 14; Lot 13-65; UPC 62036007453)  due to the potential presence of metal shards resulting from an equipment malfunction. The recalled products were supplied to Costco Canada warehouse stores.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed a twenty-ninth case of E. coli O157:H7 associated with the consumption of shredded lettuce originating in California and distributed in Canada by FreshPoint Inc. The 29 illnesses occurred in New Brunswick (6), Nova Scotia (10) and Ontario (13) between December 22, 2012 and January 5, 2013. Fourteen people have been hospitalized.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s recalls Sainsbury’s Honey Roasted Jumbo Cashews (200g; Best before 18 May 2013), due to undeclared peanuts.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Makro Belgique recalls Fine Food brand mushrooms (various varieties, lot codes and expiration dates) due to potential contamination with nicotine. Please refer to the recall notice for details.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Carrefour recalls various Carrefour brand mushrooms (various varieties, lot codes and packaging dates) due to potential contamination with nicotine. Please refer to the recall notice for details.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Univeg Belgium recalls White Mushrooms (500g; Code 02A-4127811; Sold at Aldi), Paris bruns/Paris Brown Mushrooms (350g; Package dates 5/1, 7/1 and 8/1) and Mixed Cultured Mushrooms (400g; Package dates 5/1, 7/1 and 8/1) due to possible nicotine contamination.
  • Contact Lens Recall (UK): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recalls 1-Day Acuvue® Moist® Brand Contact Lenses (Lot 2054890521 & 2054895620) and Acuvue® Advance® brand Contact Lenses with Hydraclear® (Lot B00DJPQ), due to the potential for a limited number of contact lens packages to not have completely sealed, which may result in the loss of or leaking of the packaging solution in some individual contact lens units and could compromise contact lens sterility.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0045): Mold infestation in cottage cheese from Germany; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0046): Excessive sulfadiazine in pork meat from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Republic of Korea, Netherlands and United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0047): Salmonella enteritidis in kebab meat from Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0048): Aflatoxins in peanuts from China; distributed to Slovakia.

The recalled product was supplied to cafés, restaurants and smoothie shops throughout the USA.
  • Allergy Alert: Belmont Confections Inc. recalls Dymatize Nutrition Elite Cookies & Cream bars (1.5 oz and 3 oz sizes; UPC 705016993147 and 705016993000, respectively) and Dymatize Nutrition Elite Gourmet Fudge Brownie (1.5 oz and 3 oz sizes; UPC 705016993130 and 705016993079, respectively), due to undeclared peanuts.   • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Glenn’s Market and Catering (Watertown, WI) recalls Glenn’s Market ground round, ground chuck and ground beef (various size packages; Sold between Dec 22, 2012 and Jan 4, 2013), due to potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The recalled ground beef was implicated in an outbreak cluster of three E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Wisconsin. The three patients became ill between Dec 29, 2012 and Jan 1, 2013. Two of the three case-patients reported having consumed raw ground round purchased on Dec 24, 2012; the third individual consumed product that was ground and purchased on Dec 30, 2012.  The recalled ground meat products were sold at Glenn’s Market and Catering, 722 West Main Street, Watertown, WI.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Box Lunch Company, Inc. (South San Francisco, CA) that an October-November 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese (Austin, KY) that an August 2012 inspection of the company’s cheese manufacturing facility confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on food contact and non-food contact surfaces. In addition, sampling carried out by FDA on August 30, 2012 revealed Listeria monocytogenes in three finished product samples. In addition, the August inspection revealed violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns North Fish Co., Ltd. (Etobicoke (Toronto), ON, Canada) that a June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

  • Allergy Alert: Les Aliments Deli Chef recalls various Sandwiches prepared for Deli Chef and various Sandwiches prepared for Couche Tard, due to undeclared mustard. The recalled sandwiches were supplied to retailers in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.   • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed two additional cases of E. coli O157:H7 linked to the consumption of shredded lettuce supplied to fast food and food service companies. The 28 confirmed illnesses were reported from New Brunswick (6), Nova Scotia (10) and Ontario (12). The implicated lettuce was traced to its origin in California.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns that Libigirl capsules pose a serious health risk due to the capsules containing the undeclared prescription substances sildenafil and tadalafil. The supply of these capsules is illegal in Australia.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Outbreak Alert (Cuba): Reuters reports that Cuban authorities have confirmed 51 cases of cholera in an outbreak that was first detected on January 6, 2013. The first cases were traced to a baseball game at the Latin American Stadium in the Cerro municipality of Havana.

  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Homestead Creamery (Jamesport, MO) withdraws Flory’s Favorite 60-day aged cheese made with raw milk (Packed on 210), after preliminary test results from the Missouri State Health Laboratory reveals that the cheese may be contaminated with shigatoxin-producing E. coli. The withdrawn batch of cheese was sold at the Homestead Creamery facility in Jamesport and may have been sold by HyVee (Liberty and Trenton, MO), Benedict Builders’ Farm (Knob Noster, MO) and Milton Creamery (Milton, IA).

  • Food Safety Recall Update (Scotland, UK): Snax 4 U expands its earlier recall to include all Snax 4 U (of Glasgow) products with a ‘use-by’ date of up to and including 15 January 2013, because the products were produced in premises served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice (HEPN) due to food hygiene contraventions involving rodent infestation. The recalled products were supplied mainly to news agents and small independent convenience stores.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Wales, UK): BBC reports that the owner of Adonis Kebab House has been jailed for eight months following an August 2011 outbreak of E. coli illnesses that were linked to food that was purchased at the takeaway. Diar Wali Ali admitted to 23 food hygiene offences.

  • Food Safety Recall (Israel): Shamir Salads recalls Shamir brand Egg Salad (250g; All expiry dates up to and including 30.01.2013), due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns Australians that Meizi Evolution Botanical Slimming soft gel capsules contain the undeclared prescription substance sibutramine, and should not be taken.
