  • Allergy Alert: Yolanda Quality Foods, Inc. (San Gabriel, CA) recalls various Yolanda brand gnocchi, ravioli, tortellini and tortelloni products (please see recall notice for detailed list of products) due to undeclared wheat (all recalled products) and milk (Classic Gnocchi, only).
  • Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market expands its earlier recall of Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon cold smoked, sliced salmon (4 oz; Lot 7425A2297A), due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This  second recalled lot code was sold in Whole Foods Market stores in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: United Marketing & JB Enterprises Inc. recall JB brand Apricots (450g clamshell packages; UPC 8 92012 00164 5; All codes), due to undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: Riverbend Plantation Inc. (Saskatoon, SK) recalls Riverbend Plantation brand Saskatoon Berry Chocolate Hearts (1 piece, 65g, 130g, 16 pieces, & 32 pieces; Lot 212), due to undeclared milk and hazelnuts. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall: Arbonne International Distribution Inc. recalls RE9 Advanced for Men Facial Moisturizer SPF 20 Sunscreen (Lot 043904), after product testing detected the presence of bacterial contamination (Aerococcus viridans) in a sample of the product. The recalled product was sold through Arbonne International Distribution’s network of independent sales consultants.

  • Allergy Alert: BPT Products Inc. (Sunland Park, NM) recalls various Beef Jerky products (1.5-oz pkgs; Est 40357M; Sell by dates between 2/16/2013 and 7/18/2013), due to undeclared wheat. The recalled varieties include: Cow Chips Dried Beef Original Flavor, Cow Chips Dried Beef Adobo Flavor, Cow Chips Dried Beef Adobo Flavor Hot Habañero, Carne Seca Nativo Dried Beef Adobo Flavor and Carne Seca Nativo Dried Beef Adobo Flavor Hot Habañero. They were produced on various dates between August 16, 2012 and January 18, 2013 and distributed for retail sale in El Paso, Texas.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Richard’s Hog Head Cheese, recalled by Stallings Head Cheese Co., Inc. due to possible Salmonella contamination.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Trillium Farms, LLC (Johnstown, OH) that  a June-July 2012 inspection of the company’s shell egg production facilities found serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Canada Safeway Limited recalls LifeForce Foods brand Brocco Sprouts (85g clamshell containers; UPC 8 51042 00400 2; All codes), Spicy Sprouts (85g clamshell containers; UPC 8 51042 00401 9; All codes), and Alfalfa Sprouts (85g clamshell containers; UPC 8 51042 00402 6; All codes), because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sprouts were imported from the USA and distributed through Canada Safeway stores in British Columbia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Steen’s Dairy recalls Organic Meadow brand milks (4L; Code FE 05; 3.8% MF, 2% MF, 1% MF and Skim milk), Steen’s brand milks (4L; Code FE 05; 3.25% MF, 2% MF, 1% MF and Skim milk), and Hometown brand milks (4L; Code FE 05; 3.25% MF, 2% MF and 1% MF), due to extraneous material (metal) contamination. The recalled milks were supplied to retailers in Ontario.
  • Food Recall: Dainty Foods, Div. of MRRM (Canada) Inc. recalls Dainty Cooked Rice – Pilaf (350g; Code 1081), Dainty Cooked Rice – Chicken (350g; Codes 1081, 1111, and 1151) and Dainty Cooked Rice – Primavera (350g; Code 1081) for unspecified reasons. The recalled products were sold nationwide.

  • Allergy Alert (Scotland, UK): Scotty Brand Ltd. recalls Scotty Brand Scotch Broth Soup Mix (500g; Use by dates 29 January to 3 February 2013), due to undeclared peanuts.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Nicolas Vahe ApS recalls Chocolate and Orange Spreads (210g; Product of France; Lot #L1; Best before 18/7-2015) due to mold growth.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0099): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of wet salted cod fillets from the Faeroe Islands; distributed to Italy.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating two suspected food poisoning clusters involving four persons who developed diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and headache 2-3 hours after dining at a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui on January 24th.

  • Food Safety Recall: Advance Pierre Foods (Enid, OK) recalls Fast Classics Chicken Fried Chicken Breasts (22.75-oz pouches and cases containing 6 x 22.75-oz pouches; Est P-2260Y; Best by Jan 22, 2014; Lot #1522960202; UPC 75901-33100), because the product may contain small pieces of metal. The recalled product was supplied to Walmart stores  in Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
  • Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market recalls Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon cold smoked salmon (4 oz; Lot code 7425A2298B; UPC 0 99482 40880 0), after a sample of the product tests positive for Listeria. The recalled product was sold in Whole Foods Market stores in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Utah.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sprouters Northwest (Kent, WA) recalls Sprouters Northwest brand Clover Sprouts (4-oz container, 5-oz container, 1-lb bag & 2-lb tray; Best by 1/26/2013), Brocco Sandwich Sprouts (4-oz container; Best by 1/26/2013), Spicy Sprouts (4-oz container; Best by 1/26/2013) and Alfalfa Sprouts (3-oz container & 4-oz container; Best by 1/31/2013), after two samples collected at retail locations by the Washington State Department of Agriculture were found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sprouts were supplied from 1/10/13 to 1/18/13 in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia (Canada) through retail stores and food service distribution.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: D&S Herbals, LLC, dba Freedom Trading (Woodbridge, NJ) recalls Super Power capsules (2-count blister pack; Batch Lot #L08108; Expiration date 06/2015), after tests conducted by an independent lab detected trace amounts of sildenafil in the product.
  • Personal Care Product Withdrawal: Topco Associates expands its earlier Market Withdrawal of Top Care Foaming Antibacterial Hand Soap Complete to include all lot codes, due to the presence of white floating particles throughout the product.
  • Personal Care Product Withdrawal: Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. withdraws K-Y® TINGLING® Jelly, K-Y® Sensitive Jelly and K-Y® SILK-E® Vaginal Moisturizer and Personal Lubricant after a review process determined that these items may require submission of new data to support a new medical device clearance (510(k)) application.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert Final Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have concluded their investigation into an outbreak of five cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses (three in Ontario and two in Alberta) associated with the consumption of frozen beef burgers. The source of the outbreak was Butcher’s Choice Garlic Peppercorn frozen beef burgers, manufactured by Cardinal Meat Specialists Limited. The implicated beef was recalled in December 2012.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): Nutrition & Santé Benelux recalls Céréal Gaufrettes Choco / Chocowafels (90g; Lot 2L0755; Expiry 13.08.2013), due to the possible presence of traces of rodenticide in the milk powder ingredient.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): The Co-operative recalls The Co-operative Breaded Chicken Nuggets (425g; Best before end October 2013; Batch codes L2288 6B and L2288 6C), because plastic has been found in some of the packets.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (France): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recalls 1-Day ACUVUE MOIST Contact Lenses (Lot #2054895620) and ACUVUE ADVANCE with HYDRACLEAR Contact Lenses (Lot #B00DJPQ), because incomplete package seals may compromise the sterility of the contact lenses.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0093): Salmonella typhimurium in dog chew from Argentina; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0095): Ochratoxin A in coffee from Belgium; distributed to Belgium and France.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2013.0096 & 2013.0097): Undeclared milk ingredient in frozen breaded prefried fish with improper packaging from Sweden; distributed to Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0098): Glass fragments in jarred cherries from Germany; distributed to Germany.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Saudi Arabia): The Saudi Food and Drug Authority alerts the population that 250-ml, 2-liter, 1-gallon and 5-liter containers of potable water bottled by Naqa Al Shallal Factory (Makkah) exceeds the maximum concentration of bromate permitted in bottled water. The company has been instructed to withdraw the product from the market and cease manufacturing until it is in compliance.
