  • Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market recalls Ricotta Salata cheese supplied by Forever Cheese Inc. (Long Island City, NY) and sold in Whole Foods Market stores in 21 states and Washington, DC, because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Ricotta Salata Frescolina brand cheese was cut into wedges, packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label using PLU 293427. All “sell by” dates through Oct. 2 are affected. Fourteen illnesses have been reported which may be associated with the Frescolina recall. In the four stores that sold it in California and Arizona, the recalled cheese was also sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label that read “Mitica Ricotta Salada,” and with Whole Foods Market scale labels with PLU 294413. All “sell by” dates through Oct. 2 are affected. States affected by the recall include: Alabama (1 store), Arizona (2 stores), California (2 stores), Colorado(2 stores), Florida (5 stores), Georgia (4 stores), Kansas (1 store), Kentucky (1 store), Maryland (6 stores), North Carolina (7 stores), New Jersey (2 stores), New Mexico (2 stores), New York (2 stores), Ohio (2 stores), Oregon (6 stores), Pennsylvania (5 stores), South Carolina (1 store), Tennessee (3 stores), Utah (1 store), Virginia (6 stores), Washington (6 stores), and Washington, D.C. (3 stores).
  • Food Safety Recall: Gretchen’s Shoebox Express (Seattle, WA) recalls Starbucks Protein Bistro Box (6.80 oz; UPC 762111881502; Enjoy By 09/02/12-09/27/12), because the Bistro Boxes contain a recalled peanut butter pouch that may be contaminated with Salmonella. the recalled product was distributed in Washington and Oregon.
  • Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market recalls Chicken Spring Rolls (UPC 225757203997; Sell by 10/1 or 10/2) and Peanut Sesame Noodles (UPC 222099604192; either a sold on date of 9/27 or 9/28 or a sell by date of 10/1 or 10/2), because the products contain peanuts that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were sold from the Whole Foods Market Kirby store (2955 Kirby Drive, Houston, TX) from Sept 27-28, 2012.
  • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2012.1382): Salmonella Thompson in Foppen smoked salmon from Greece; distributed to Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1395): Listeria monocytogenes in ricotta cheese from Italy Fattorie Chiarappa; distributed to Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Romania and the USA.

  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Taiwan): Costco Wholesale has pulled from its Taiwan stores all smoked salmon processed by the Dutch company Foppen, as the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 16 people who developed gastroenteritis about 5 – 37 hours after dining at a restaurant in Qingdao on September 26.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis at a secondary school in Shatin involving 29 students between the ages of 10 and 13 years.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1395): Listeria monocytogenes in ricotta cheese from Italy Fattorie Chiarappa; distributed to Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Romania and the USA.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1398): Salmonella Montevideo in processed animal proteins from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Germany and Thailand.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Middlemore Hospital (Auckland) has closed one ward and banned children from visiting after its norovirus outbreak expanded to affect 113 people, including 56 patients and 57 staff members.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1395): Listeria monocytogenes in ricotta cheese from Italy Fattorie Chiarappa; distributed to Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Romania and the USA.

  • Food Safety Recall: Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. Inc. recalls certain fresh-cut fruit packages containing mangoes from Agricola Daniella, because the mangoes may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products include Mango Slices, Tropical Fruit Medley, Tropical Fruit Bowl, Seasonal Blend, Mango Chunks, Tropical Blend, Pineapple/Mango/Grape, Strawberry/Kiwi/Mango, Apple Blend and Fruit Bowl. The products were sold under the Del Monte and 7 Eleven Fresh To Go brands, and also under Generic labels (sold at Walmart stores).   • Food Safety Recall: Newman’s Own Organics recalls Peanut Butter Newman-O’s Sandwich Crème Cookies (8 oz/ 6 pack; Expiration 27MAY13) and Peanut Butter Newman-O’s Sandwich Crème Cookies (13 oz/6 pack; Expiration 3MAY13), because the cookies were made using peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.
  • Food Recall: Food City alerts its customers to the recall of Valu Time Orange Juice Recon. No reason is given for the action.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency alerts the public to a further expansion of the XL Foods (Est 38) beef recall, due to potential contamination with E. coli O157:H7. Four E. coli O157 illnesses have been associated with the consumption of beef products originating from this XL Foods facility.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Valpiform recalls Valpiform Pain Soleil (400g; Expiry 24/12/2012 & 24/11/2012), Pain de Mie (350g; Expiry 21/11/2012), and Pain de Mie aux Fibres (350g; Expiry 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, 24/11/2012 & 21/12/2012), because the products, which are labeled “sans arachide,” contain traces of peanut.
  • Allergy Alert (France): Société Valpiform recalls Allergo Pain aux Grains (400g; Expiry 25/10/2012, 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, & 24/11/2012), Pain de Mie (350g; Expiry 21/11/2012, 22/11/2012, 23/11/2012, 13/12/2012, & 14/12/2012), and Pain de Mie aux Fibres (350g; Expiry 24/10/2012, 23/11/2012, 24/11/2012, 14/12/2012), because the products, which are labeled “sans arachide,” contain traces of peanut.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Det Eksotiske Catering recalls Wheat Kernel Salad (325g; All best before dates from 28.09.2012 through 08.10.2012), Exotic Pasta Salad with Chicken (275g; All best before dates from 28.09.2012 through 08.10.2012), Humus (175g and 1 kg; all best before dates from 22.10.2012 through 31.10.2012) and Cacik, Tzatziki (175g and 1 kg; all best before dates from 22.10.2012 through 31.10.2012), because Listeria was found in samples of these products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Luxembourg): The manufacturer recalls Holle brand Bio Babybrei 3 Kom ab dem 6ten Monat (Product of Switzerland; 250g; Lot R11171; Expiry 25/04/2013), because the product contain Ochratoxin A in excess of permitted limits.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Euro Quality Lambs Ltd. recalls Euro Quality Lambs’ lamb brain (all date and batch codes), because the products entered the food chain without proper inspection.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): The outbreak of acute gastroenteritis has now affected 8,962 persons and caused 23 to be hospitalized. The outbreak involves 369 schools and child care centers in five regions: Brandenburg (2,896 illnesses), Berlin (2,223 illnesses), Sachsen (2,880 illnesses), Sachsen-Anhalt (50 illnesses), and Thüringen (913 illnesses). The source and root cause of the outbreak is still under investigation.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Nine staff members at Tauranga Hospital have become infected with norovirus in an outbreak that also has affected 22 hospital patients.

(Fresno, CA) recalls DFI brand Cantaloupe (6, 9, 12, 15 or 18 cantaloupes per carton; 826 CALIFORNIA WESTSIDE stamped on carton; Packed August 26, 2012), after Salmonella is found on a single sample during routine USDA testing at a wholesale produce distribution center. The recalled cantaloupes may have been distributed from August 27 to September 10, 2012 primarily to retail customers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Mexico. It is likely that the majority of the product is no longer in commerce.
  • Food Safety Recall: Whole Foods Market recalls Ricotta Salata supplied by Forever Cheese Inc. All “sell by” dates through Oct. 2 are affected.   • Food Safety Recall: Harris Teeter recalls Fresh Salmon Jalapeno & Cheddar Cakes (UPC 0020945800000), because the product contains onions that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold in the following seven Harris Teeter stores: Store #21, Cameron Village, Raleigh, NC, Store #253, Pender Campus, Fairfax, VA, Store #282, Jenkins Row, Washington, DC, Store #341, High Point Mall, High Point, NC, Store #83, Pentagon Town Center, Arlington, VA, Store #238, Stone Ridge, Aldie, VA, and Store #378, Colonial Avenue, Norfolk, VA.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: The Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Program has halted custom exempt processing operations at Braunschweig Meat Processing, due to a violation related to the operation’s potable water supply.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Distribution Horizon Nature Inc. recalls Valpiform Pain Soleil (400g; Code 12167; Expiry date 28/12/2012) and Valpiform Pain de Mie (350g; Code 12194; Expiry date 10/01/2013), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts. The recalled product was sold in Quebec.

Europe

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Finland): Force Sports Nutrition Ky recalls Man Fuel, 100% Natural Herbal Supplement (Made in China; All best before dates) because the product contains dimethylsildenafil, a derivative of the active pharmaceutical agent present in Viagra.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1311): Listeria monocytogenes in vanilla ice cream from Italy; distributed to Switzerland.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.1313): Salmonella typhimurium in rapeseed meal from Belgium; distributed to Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1314): Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in tinned clams from Portugal; distributed to Spain.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis caused by norovirus at a seniors home in North District that involves 15 residents and 5 staff members. Four of the outbreak victims were hospitalized.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Sierra Leone): As of September 11th, Sierra Leone has reported over 17,500 cases of cholera, and more than 260 deaths. Twelve of the country’s 13 districts are affected, according to a Travel Health Notice from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
