  • Allergy Alert: Isabella Foods (El Paso, TX) recalls Isabella Foods of El Paso Green Chicken Tamales (36-oz pkgs of 12 tamales; Est P-13389; Produced through Jan 18, 2013) and Isabella Foods of El Paso Red Pork Tamales (36-oz pkgs of 12 tamales; Est 1960; Produced through Jan 18, 2013), due to undeclared wheat or soy. The recalled products were supplied to institutions and retail stores in the El Paso, Texas area.
  • Food Safety Recall: San José Valley Veal (Santa Clara, CA) recalls San Jose Valley Veal and Beef Inc. boneless veal trimmings (60-lb cardboard box cases; Est 2828; Case codes L-1 11112, L-1 11212, L-1 11512, L-1 11612, L-1 11712, L-1 11812 or L-1 11912; Produced between November 1st and November 9th, 2012), because the trimmings may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were transported to a federal facility for further distribution.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. (Parsippany, NJ) recalls Theraflu ® Warming Relief Flu and Sore Throat (8.3 oz. UPC 300436265081; Lot 10108935, 10096570, 10121298, 10123035, 10106483, & 10126716), Theraflu® Daytime Warming Relief Severe Cold and Cough (8.3 oz.; UPC 300430461083; Lot 10096571, 10117845, 10102070, 10118134, 10118135, 10126586, & 10126729), Theraflu® Daytime/Nighttime Severe Cold & Cough Value Pack (UPC 300436412164; Lot 10120065, 10116591A, 10116591, 10116593, 10106487, 10108285, 10116594, 10116597, 10116598, 10116600, 10116601, & 10116602), Theraflu® Nighttime Warming Relief Severe Cold and Cough (8.3 oz.; UPC 300430460086; Lot 10104954, 10104955, 10107018, 10118113, 10123039, 10104956, & 10126861), Theraflu® Warming Relief Cold and Chest Congestion (8.3 oz.; UPC 300436296085; Lot 10106482, 10102071, 10113497, 10122891, 10123274, 10126440, & 10128457), Theraflu® Warming Relief Sinus and Cold (8.3 oz.; UPC 300436407085; Lot 10095358 & 10104966), Triaminic® Chest and Nasal Congestion (4 oz; UPC 300436347046; Lot 10092515, 10095554, 10098503, 10106046, & 10106233), Triaminic® Cold and Allergy (4 oz.; UPC 300436346049; Lot 10092519, 10096507, 10092518, 10102344, 10102052, 10098505, 10106511, 10099191, 10122929, & 10125956), and Triaminic® Cough and Sore Throat (4 oz.; UPC 300436348043; Lot 10104678, 10107025, 10107026, 10117681, 10118052, & 10126850) because the child-resistant feature of the bottle cap may not function properly, enabling the cap to be removed with the tamper-evident seal still in place. The recalled syrups were manufactured in the company’s Lincoln, NE facility prior to December 2011 and were distributed nationwide.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: FoodState Inc. (Derry, NH) recalls MegaFood One Daily Tablets (60, 90, and 180 tablets/bottle; Lot #10613, 10724 through 10728, 11246 and 12191) because the packaging is not child-resistant as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The recalled products were sold at  Sprouts Farmers Market, Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods Market and other natural food stores nationwide from June 2012 to October 2012.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that a total of 20 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium as a result of contact with pet hedgehogs purchased from multiple breeders in different states have been reported from eight states: Alabama (1), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Michigan (3), Minnesota (3), Ohio (3), Oregon (1), and Washington (7). Four of the 20 victims were hospitalized. One death associated with this outbreak was reported in Washington state.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Boucherie Mimmo inc (Montreal, QC) recalls a number of meat products due to undeclared milk, wheat, soy, nuts, and/or sesame seeds. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products.
  • Food Safety Recall: GNG Food Service Inc. recalls GNG Food Service Inc. Hummous (5kg and 11kg; Production date 15.January 2013; Expiry Date 30. January 2013), due to Listeria contamination. The recalled product was supplied to hotels, restaurants and/or institutions in Ontario.

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Lantmännen Danpo A / S recalls Chicky World Fried Hot Wings, frozen (1kg bags; All expiry dates up to and including January 2014), due to undeclared celery.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Tesco withdraws Tesco Mini Chocolate Crispies (49g; Batch #2292, 2295, 2303, 2319, 3021; All Best before dates between and including 19 May 2013 and 30 June 2013), due to undeclared soya.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2013.0103): Defective packaging of food supplements from the Netherlands; distributed to the Netherlands and Taiwan.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2013.0104): Undeclared milk ingredients in chilled mortadella from Italy; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2013.0105): Undeclared celery in hot chicken wings from Denmark; distributed to Denmark, Germany, Malta and Norway.

United States

  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Applegate® Naturals Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets (8-oz cartons), recalled by King’s Delight due to undeclared wheat.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Stallings Head Cheese Co., Inc. recalls Richard’s Hog Head Cheese (10-oz pkg; Est #2257; Use by 2 1 2013 or 3 20 2013; Produced November 1, 2012 and December 19, 2012 respectively), after hog head cheese from this establishment were linked to a recent cluster of six Salmonella Uganda illnesses in Louisiana. Illness onset dates ranged from october 16, 2012 to November 10, 2012; four patients confirmed having eaten this brand of head cheese. Four of nine retail samples from different production dates have tested positive for Salmonella; however, tests to determine whether the outbreak strain of Salmonella Uganda was recovered from the retail samples are not yet complete. The recalled products were shipped to a distribution center for retail distribution in Louisiana and Southeastern Texas, and were sold at Brookshire’s food and pharmacy and Super1Foods & Discount Pharmacy . USDA has not yet released a retail distribution list for this recall.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Jouni Meats, Inc. (Sterling Heights, MI) recalls various size packages of ground beef (Produced between Dec 4, 2012 and Dec 9, 2012), after consumption of ground beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods was linked to an outbreak of  16 Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9) and Wisconsin (3). Illness onset dates ranged from December 9, 2012 to January 7, 2013. Seven of the outbreak victims reported having eaten a raw ground beef dish at the same restaurant before becoming ill. The restaurant had acquired the raw beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Gab Halal Foods (Troy, MI) recalls various size packages of ground beef (Produced between Dec 4, 2012 and Dec 9, 2012), after consumption of ground beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods was linked to an outbreak of  16 Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9) and Wisconsin (3).   • Food Safety Recall Update: The California Department of Public Health releases a state-wide list of retailers that were supplied with Hunt’s Tomato Sauce (Regular and No Salt Added), recalled by ConAgra Foods due to a defective inner can lining.
  • Personal Care Product Recall: The Procter & Gamble Company recalls Crest 3D White Arctic Fresh Rinse (946 ml; Lot 22155395RF; UPC 37000-84023), due to a cloudy appearance, according to information posted by Haggen Northwest Fresh and TOP Food and Drug.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: FDA and Jonlly Fruits, Inc. (Puerto Rico) enter into consent decree of permanent injunction prohibiting distribution of fruit and juice products sold under Jonlly’s own label, as well as “Natural Tropic,” “Selectos,” and several other private-label brands. Under the decree, Jonlly agrees to cease all operations until they comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, including Current Good Manufacturing Practices and the juice HACCP regulations.
  • Pet Treat Safety Withdrawal: The Hartz Mountain Corporation withdraws Hartz® Chicken Chews™ and Hartz® Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken, because the dog treats contain trace amounts of an unapproved antibiotic residue.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: King’s Processing Ltd. recalls a variety of Subs, Wraps and Sandwiches sold under the Savoury Express and Sub Delicious brands, in addition to an unbranded 5-pack Value Sub (various package sizes and Best before dates), due to undeclared mustard. The recalled products were supplied to retailers in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): The Health Store recalls various products sold from The Health Store shops and other health food stores, due to undeclared milk and/or sulphites. Please refer to the Food Allergen Alert for a complete list of affected products and Best before dates.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Hainich Konserven GmbH recalls Hainich Cherry Preserves (370 mL; Best before 17.07.2015), after receiving a consumer complaint regarding glass fragments.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): Migros Zurich recalls Gorgonzola Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.838.220.00), Gorgonzola Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.848.260.00), Gorgonzola Mascarpone Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.820.000.00) Gorgonzola Dolce, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.840.065.00) Gorgonzola Piccante, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.839.065), and Gorgonzola Mascarpone, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.818.025), after Listeria was found in two types of gorgonzola. The recalled cheeses were sold at Migros Zurich: Zurich canton, Glaris canton, and several points of sale in Saint-Gall canton.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (Spain): Johnson & Johnson Medical Iberia recalls 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® contact lenses (Lot 2054895620) and ACUVUE® ADVANCE® WITH HYDRACLEAR contact lenses (Lot B00DJPQ), due to the possibility of an incomplete seal, which could compromise the sterility of the contact lenses.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Australia): Three additional cases of listeriosis have been reported in New South Wales among people who consumed soft cheeses recalled by Jindi Cheese Company. The new cases bring the total number of cases to 21, nationwide. A woman in New South Wales miscarried after contracting listeriosis, and two deaths have been reported in other states among those affected by the outbreak.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: True Taste, LLC (Kenosha, WI) recalls vacuum packaged Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout, Hot Smoked Whitefish, Hot Smoked Herring, Hot Smoked Mackerel, Hot Smoked Salmon Steak, Cold Smoked Mackerel, and Cold Smoked Whitefish (all production dates beginning with 01/01/2012 through current), because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled vacuum packaged smoked fish products were sold under the True Taste label in California and Illinois, and under the Lowell Foods label in Illinois. The potential for contaminated was identified when the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection found that the product did not meet the 3.5% minimum requirement for water phase salt. True Taste LLC has halted production and is cooperating with regulatory authorities.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Matrixx Initiatives recalls Zicam® Extreme Congestion Relief Nasal Gel (0.5 oz spray bottle; NDC #62750-005-10; Lot #2J23; Expiration date 09/15), after Burkholderia cepacia was found in a sample of the product.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: 9136-4802 Quebec Inc., dba Délices Al-Manar (East-Angus, QC) recalls Imane Chicken Salami with Fine Herbs (450g; UPC 6 81408 00014 6) and Imane Chicken Wieners (375g; UPC 6 81408 00022 1), due to the presence of undeclared mustard, and recalls Imane Beef Wieners (450g; UPC 6 81408 00020 7), Imane Hot Beef Wieners (450g; UPC 6 81408 00021 4) and Imane Turkey Salami (450g; UPC 6 81408 00024 5), due to the presence of undeclared soy. All Best before dates are affected. The products were distributed in Ontario and Quebec.

Europe

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Jindi Cheese Pty Ltd. recalls 1-kg size of Jindi Brie, Jindi Camembert, Jindi Food Service Brie, Wattle Valley Brie, and Wattle Valley Camembert (Best before 21 December 2012), due to potential Listeria spp. contamination. The recalled cheeses were sold in independent supermarkets and delicatessens in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): The Ministry for Primary Industries warns that people are risking their lives when they take and eat shellfish from areas where warnings are in place regarding paralytic shellfish toxins. Some people who ate shellfish from the Bay of Plenty have been admitted to intensive care. Marine biotoxins are heat stable and are not inactivated by cooking.
