United States

  • Allergy Alert: Euro Foods, Inc., d.b.a. Citterio USA Corp (Freeland, PA) recalls Citterio Rustico Chorizo Spanish Style (7-oz pkg, containing 24 pieces; Lot 659; Expiration date 8/12/12 or 8/12/12; Est 4010) and Citterio Rustico Chorizo Spanish Style (7-oz pkg, containing 24 pieces; Lot 135; Expiration date 11/30/12; Est 4010), due to the presence of undeclared soy protein. The recalled product was distributed to retail establishments and wholesale distributors in Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Tennessee and Texas.
  • Food Safety Recall (from Weekly Enforcement Report): Fresca Foods, Inc. (Louisville, CO) recalls Boulder Ice Cream Organic Chocolate Pudding Ice Cream (3.6-oz; Lot 35587; Best by 03/15/13), Boulder Ice Cream Organic Vanilla (1 pt; Lot 35585; Best by 03/06/13), Boulder Ice Cream Organic Italian Espresso (3.6 oz; Lot 35909; Best by 03/08/13) and Boulder Ice Cream Organic Green Tea (1 pt; Lot 35712; Best by 03/12/13) because the organic raw milk may not be exposed to the full pasteurization controls before being made into ice cream products. The recalled ice cream product were distributed in Colorado and California.
  • Consumer Product Recall: Unilever recalls Suave Professionals® New Keratin Infusion 30 Day Smoothing Kit (3-piece kit; UPC 0-79400-19562; All lots) because of potential consumer misunderstanding of the product’s suitability for certain hair conditions.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: The California Department of Food and Agriculture announces a statewide recall and quarantine order for raw milk, raw skim milk (non-fat), raw cream and raw butter produced by Organic Pastures Dairy (Fresno County, CA) after the state confirmed detection of Campylobacter bacteria in raw cream from the dairy. The California Department of Public Health reports at least 10people with Campylobacter infection were identified throughout California and reported consuming Organic Pastures raw milk prior to illness onset. Outbreak patients are residents of Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara counties.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Buncombe County Department of Health reports that tests conducted by the North Carolina Department of Public Health confirm the unopened bag of culture that was added to tempeh tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B. There have been 63 cases of Salmonella Paratyphi B infections reported to the state public health officials; 58 of those cases are from Buncombe County.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Vanderburgh County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health are investigating a case of Hepatitis A in a food worker at the Lone Star Restaurant located in the Eastland Place Shopping Center in Evansville, IN. Persons who were exposed between April 27, 2012 to May 3, 2012 and unvaccinated can receive a dose of Hepatitis A vaccine. People who ate or drank at the Lone Star from April 20-26, 2012 may also have been exposed, but should not receive the vaccine as it is not effective for exposure past 14 days.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Small turtles infected with Salmonella Sandiego, Salmonella Pomona and Salmonella Poona are responsible for five separate multistate outbreaks of salmonellosis. A total of 124 people from 27 states have been affected. Nineteen people were hospitalized; two-thirds of the victims are children 10 years of age or younger.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Perestroika Products Ltd. (Burnaby, BC) recalls Real Deal Energy Cookie Oatmeal, Flax & Raisin (650g; Code 01021.12 and 02020.12; UPC 7 75461 76104 2) and POWERflax Energy Cookie High Fiber (650g; Code 32220.11, 32520.11, 01020.12 and 06820.12; UPC 7 76461 76107 3), because the products contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed through London Drugs stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Public Health Agency of Canada alerts Canadians that several people in the United States and one person in Canada have become ill with a Salmonella infection as a result of contact with pets or pet food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. A manufacturer in the United States, Diamond Pet Foods, has recalled several batches of its dry pet food due to possible contamination with Salmonella, including pet food that was shipped to Canada. The affected pet food was distributed to British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick and may have been distributed to other provinces and territories.   • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Church & Dwight Canada recalls Spinbrush Pro Clean SONIC Recharge Toothbrushes (Lot codes DD9355 to 9365 and DD0002 to 0122; distributed between February 2010 and October 2011) due to the risks, including fire, shock or burns, posed by the charging base overheating.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a confirmed case of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection in an 80-year old man who was hospitalized with bloody diarrhea. The patient had no travel history and his home contacts are asymptomatic.
  • Contaminated Water Alert (China): China’s Ministry of Land and Resources reported today that “dirty” underground water continues to be a serious problem for Chinese cities, as a majority of monitored sites reported “bad or extremely bad” water quality in 2011.

  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Sold Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc. (El Cajon, CA) recalls Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food (4-lb, 15-lb and 33-lb packs; Best before December 30, 2012; Batch code starting SGB1201) and Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food (4-lb, 15-lb and 28.5-lb packs; Best before December 30, 2012; Batch code starting SGL1201), after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility. The recalled products were distributed in the United States and Canada from between January and May 2012.
  • Consumer Product Safety Alert: Water Pik, Inc. will replace certain SinuSense™ Water Pulsator nasal irrigation devices it manufactured between May, 2010 and July, 2011. This program is being offered in response to consumer complaints that water being used in the Pulsator seeped into the battery compartment leading to battery corrosion, possible reservoir contamination and the need to prematurely replace batteries.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Buncombe County health officials report that the number of Salmonella Paratyphi B cases in the county has risen to 60. The outbreak has been traced to Smiling Hara Tempeh, a fermented soy bean product.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) has issued a Notice of Violation and Order against Kanemitsu Inc. and George Kanemitsu dba Kanemitsu Bakery for selling, offering for sale, and distributing food products manufactured and prepared at its facility under unsanitary conditions. A penalty of $90,000 has been issued.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns O’Kroft, Inc. (Rockwall, TX) that a February 2012 inspection of the company’s facility revealed serious violations of the regulations for acidified foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Midwest Northern, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) that a December 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility found significant violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Riddle Brothers (Hornbeack, TN) that a March 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Purus Labs, Inc., d.b.a. Dark Cyde Supplements (Dallas, TX) that an April/May 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement facility found violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packaging, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Boiron Freres SAS (Valence, France) that a December 2011 inspection of the company’s juice processing facility found serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.

Canada

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Dermolab Pharma (Sainte Julie, QC) and Dermtek Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Montreal, QC) recall REVERSA Cleansing Micellar Solution (300-mL clear bottle; UPC 06752000455 0; Lot code K0300D) due to possible contamination of the product by the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia. The recalled product was distributed to Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores across Canada.
  • Food Safety Alert: Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada remind the public that consumption of certain whole salted fish products like fesikh, a traditional dish in the Egyptian community, represents an increased risk of botulism because of the way they are prepared. The reminder comes on the heels of an outbreak of botulism in Ontario caused by the consumption of fesikh.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: Prince Edward Island’s Chief Public Health Office reports that the outbreak of gastroenteritis related to a roast beef dinner prepared by volunteers of the Princetown United Church on Saturday, April 28th has now affected 209 people. Testing of left over foods from the event have revealed the presence of Clostridium perfringens.

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Heritage Fine Chocolates recalls four Macro Wholefoods Market brand Lactose-free chocolate products due to the presence of undeclared milk.   • Allergy Alert: Figi’s Inc. (Marshfield, WI) recalls Lemon Bar Bliss (1# tins; No expiration date codes) due to the presence of undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed in Missouri, Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Louisiana, Oregon, and Utah by UPS mail directly to purchasers or recipients.
  • Food Safety Recall: H-E-B recalls 19 Asian Ready-to-Eat entrées and meals (4-oz, 8-oz, 12-oz, and 24-oz black containers with clear lid, single serve sizes and to-go containers; all products sold prior to 5/3/12) due to possible undercooking of chicken in those meals. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled items were sold in 40 stores in Texas, including one Houston store. They were available at the Grab ‘N Go section in H-E-B Delis.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC reports an outbreak of 14 cases of Salmonella Infantis infections in nine states. The infections are linked to contaminated dry dog food produced by Diamond Pet Foods at their Gaston, South Carolina manufacturing facility.

  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): PepsiCo recalls Tropicana Kids Orange Juice Drink – Orange and a Splash of Water (4 x 200ml; illegible coding), because they contain water instead of orange juice drink. The water is not of a satisfactory microbial quality and should not be consumed.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): The Danish Gærfabrikker A / S recalls Maltese Cross Baker’s Yeast (50g; Package date 10/4-2012; Best before 15/5-2012), due to mold growth.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): Market In supermarkets recalls Daily-Toasted Unsweetened Croutons (Manufactured in Poland by Daily Orange SA; 285g; Batch #08.02.2013), because the product was manufactured with the illegal use of prepared egg yolk powder and is contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (France): The Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Repression of Fraud advises the public of the recall of POWERtabs Dietary Supplement for Men (10- and 20-capsule packages, with Best before date of 2013-12 and 2-capsule blister-pack, with Best before date of 2015-01), because the products contain the undeclared and unauthorized pharmaceutical substance dithio desmethyl carbodenafil.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0593): Omethoate in okra from Thailand; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0594): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of frozen mackerel from Ireland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0596): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0597): Plastic fragments in cinnamon sugar from Austria; distributed to the Czech Republic.

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): LHF Ltd. recalls Lisa’s Organic Hummus Roasted Garlic (200g tub; Best before 11/05/12), due to contamination with Listeria. The recalled product was sold in supermarkets and some specialty stores throughout the South Island, and in two specialist organic stores in the Auckland region.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Euro Spices Pty Ltd. recalls Ground Coriander and other spice mixes (Product of India; Best before December 2015; Please refer to recall notice for a complete list of products and package sizes), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were sold in fruit and vegetable shops and independent supermarkets in New South Wales.
