  • Outbreak Alert (New York): Food Safety News reports that Livingston County (New York) health officials are investigating seven cases of E. coli; four people were hospitalized. The source of the infections is unknown.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Wing Kee Foodstuff Company (San Francisco, CA) that a June 2011 inspection of the company’s facilities found a serious violation of the seafood HACCP regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Old Fashioned Foods, Inc. (Mayville, WI) that an April/May 2012 inspection of the company’s low-acid and acidified food manufacturing facility found significant deviations from the Low-Acid Canned Foods regulations and from the Acidified Foods regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Santos Incorporated (San Leandro, CA) that a March 2012 inspection of the company’s facility found serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Centrum Valley Farms, LLP (Clarion, IA) that an April/May 2012 inspection of the company’s shell egg production faciliity found serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Parrillo Performance (Fairfield, OH) that a February 2012 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement manufacturing and re-packaging facility revealed a failure to comply with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns East Asia Noodle Co., Inc. (Philadelphia, PA) that a May 2012 inspection of the company’s processing facility found significant deviations from the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations for food manufacturers.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Petruzzi Pizza Mfg., Inc. (Hazleton, PA) that a May 2012 inspection of the company’s processing facility found significant deviations from the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations for food manufacturers.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Diamond Head Seafood Wholesale, Inc. (Honolulu, HI) that a June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Crab Lady’s Market (Little Deer Isle, ME) that a July 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns New Day Fisheries, Inc. (Port Townsend, WA) that a June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Curry’s Bakery, Inc. dba Pastry Perfection (Garden City, ID) that a June 2012 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility found serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Philippine Cinmic Industrial Corp (General Santos City, Philippines) that a review of documentation submitted by the company found serious deviations from the Seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nicho Produce Company, Inc. (Edinburg, TX) that a December 2011 inspection of the company’s produce processing facility carried out in response to recalls of “Cut Above” brand shredded bagged lettuce and spinach products associated with Listeria monocytogenes findings in two samples, documented the presence of L. monocytogenes on direct food-contact surfaces at the facility in addition to serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Food.
  • Consumer Advisory: Lucky Supermarkets advises its customers that the company DOES NOT CARRY Tanimura & Antle Farms Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine Lettuce, which was recalled by Tanimura & Antle due to potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: La Branche d’Olivier (Verdun, QC) recalls La Branche d’Olivier Rubbed Basil (90g; UPC 200001 802003), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled Rubbed Basil was Sold from La Branche d’Olivier, 4342 Wellington, Verdun, Quebec, up to and including May 25, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Champ’s Mushrooms (Aldergrove, BC) recalls Champ’s Mushrooms brand Sliced Crimini Mushrooms (Product of Canada; 227g/8-oz pkgs; Packed on date PO 10AUG2012; UPC 6 78286 88877 5), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled mushrooms were distributed in British Columbia.
  • Outbreak Alert (Nova Scotia): Barfblog reports that 26 cases of apparent norovirus-like illness have been reported among patrons and workers at The Bicycle Thief restaurant in Halifax.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection reports that a total of 122 outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis and norovirus have been recorded so far in 2012, the highest number since 2007. Fifty-two out of 65 institutional outbreak for which lab confirmation was obtained were associated with norovirus.

  • Allergy Alert: Clif Bar & Company recalls 12-pack Blueberry Crisp CLIF® Bars (Best by date 17MAR13G3; UPC 7-22252-30260-1; Blueberry Crisp CLIF Bars mislabeled in Chocolate Chip CLIF Bar individual wrappers with Best by date 17MAR13G3 and UPC 7-22252-10090-0), due to the presence of undeclared almonds. The recalled products were distributed to a limited number of stores east of the Mississippi River.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dale T. Smith and Sons Meat Packing (Draper, UT) recalls approximately 38,200 pounds of Boneless Beef “50/50,” “85/15,” “90/10,” “93/07” or “95/05”, and primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef (various weight combo bins; produced Aug 7, 2012; Est 4975), because the beef products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products were distributed to wholesale and retail establishments in California and Salt Lake City, Utah, and were destined for further processing. The contamination problem was discovered through USDA lab testing and may have occurred as a result of refrigeration malfunction.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA updates retail distribution information for various meat and poultry salad products that were recalled by Garden Fresh Foods due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Outbreak Alert (Nebraska): The South Heartland District Health Department and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services are investigating 17 confirmed and 2 probable/suspect cases of Salmonella infections among residents, staff and visitors at the Blue Hill Care Center in Webster County. Four residents were hospitalized temporarily; one visitor remains in hospital. The source of the outbreak is under investigation.
  • Outbreak Alert (Illinois): Will County Health Department is investigating a cluster of E. coli cases – including seven involving children – that may be associated with beaches in the Wilmington-Essex area, according to a report in The Daily Journal.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Zarda Foods, LLC (Blue Springs, MO) that a July 2012 inspection of the company’s processing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Trafon Group, Inc., dba Star Meat (Guaynabo, PR) that a January/February 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer facility in San Juan, PR found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Sea World, Inc. (St. Thomas, VI) that a March 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood warehouse establishment found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Ciresa Formaggi, Snc (Introbio, Italy) that a January 2012 inspection of the company’s cheese processing facility found serious deviations from the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.

  • Food Safety Recall: Highline Mushrooms (Leamington, ON) recalls Highline Mushrooms Sliced White Mushrooms (227g/8oz containers; Lot #L410805; Best before 12AU15; UPC 7 71163 00005 2) and Compliments Sliced White Mushrooms (227g/8oz containers; Lot #L410805; Best before 12AU15; UPC 0 68820 10090 4), because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario, and may also have been distributed in other provinces.
  • Food Safety Recall: Leadbetter Foods Inc. recalls Leadbetters Lean Ground Beef Tubes (4 x 400g; Code #1704; UPC 8 73587 00164 3) due to harmful extraneous material contamination. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Frucor Beverages recalls New Zealand Natural Bottled Still Spring Water (6 x 1.5L multipacks; Best before 24/10/2013 to 30/10/13, inclusive), following a consumer complaint identifying algal growth in a bottle.

  • Food Safety Recall: Interior Alaska Fish Processors, Inc. (Fairbanks, AK) recalls Santa’s Smokehouse Gourmet Smoked Salmon (Batch #408 through #457; All batches processed since December 2011 with labels indicating that the products can be kept under refrigeration), due to possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The recalled products were distributed in and around the Fairbanks area, and sold online through the company web site.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Albertsons advises its customers that products recalled by GH Foods because they contain yellow onions that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes were sold at Albertsons stores in California and Nevada.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: FDA posts detailed list of products recalled by Garden-Fresh Foods because they contain onions from Gills Onions that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. California Department of Public Health reports that products recalled by Garden-Fresh Foods were sold in Target stores across California.
  • Food Safety Recall: San Miguel Produce, Inc. (Oxnard, CA) recalls Cut ‘N Clean, Comfort (Cooking) Greens Kits (24-oz clamshell container; UPC 028764000616; run number-best used by dates of 20260-07/25/12, 20260-07/26/12, 20340-07/27/12, 20437-07/30/12, 20546-08/02/12, 20651-08/03/12, 20756-08/06/12, and 20756-08/07/12), because the products contain onions from Gills Onions, which has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled Kits were distributed July 13, 2012 through July 17, 2012 to retail stores in Arizona, California, Iowa and Nevada.
  • Food Safety Recall: Garden Fresh Foods (Milwaukee, WI) recalls various meat and poultry salad products, because the salads contain diced onions recalled by Gill Onions due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the USDA recall notice for a detailed list of impacted products.
  • OTC Drug Safety Recall: DUKAL Corporation recalls selected lots of Zee Antiseptic Swabs, Med 2 ply (50/box, 36 boxes/case; Item #0204), Zee Antiseptic Swab, Med 2 ply (100/box, 20 bx/cs; Item #0271), Dukal BZK Swab, Med 2 ply NS (1/pch, 200/box, 20 bx/cs; Item #854), Zee Antiseptic Swab, Med 2 ply (50/box, 36 bx/cs; Item #02040), Zee Antiseptic Swab, Med 2 ply (10/bx, 10bx/bdl, 6 bdl/cs: Item #2633) and Dukal BZK Swab Med 2 ply NS (1/pch, 1000/bx, 4 bx/cs; Item #854-1000), because the swabs may be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia. The recalled benzalkonium chloride antiseptic swabs and wipes were manufactured for DUKAL by Jianerkang Medical Dressing Co. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of affected lot codes.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Healthcare Food Services Inc.  recalls HFS Carrot Minced, bulk (5 x 1.0 kg; Daycode 2171-1; Expiry date 3170; UPC 1 0062373 61000 9), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario and Quebec.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a suspected food poisoning outbreak involving 10 persons who developed diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain about 10 to 25 hours after dining at a restaurant in Tsuen Wan on July 24th.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New South Wales, Australia): Patrons of Sumo Salad (Westpac Place, Kent St., Sydney) who ate food bought between Wednesday July 11th and Thursday July 26th may have been exposed to hepatitis A. A food handler who prepared salad at Sumo Salad has been diagnosed with the Hepatitis A virus. A free vaccine clinic will be held at Sydney Hospital for people who ate salad or sandwiches from Sumo Salad, Westpac Place between Thursday 19 July and Thursday 26 July. Individuals who purchased food from Sumo Salad between July 11th and July 18th should see their doctor if they develop symptoms; it is too late for the hepatitis A vaccine to be effective in these individuals.
