  • Allergy Alert: Cass-Clay  Creamery (Fargo, ND) recalls Cass-Clay Maple Nut Ice Cream (1 gal/3.78L; UPC 70422-03404; Plant #38-25; all date codes), Cass-Clay Premium Light Maple Nut Ice Cream (1 gal/3.78L; UPC 70422-23404; Plant #38-25; all date codes) and Hornbacher’s Maple Nut Ice Cream (1/2 gal/1.89L; UPC 41130-21666; Plant #38-25; all date codes) due to the presence of undeclared Brazil nuts, and Cass-Clay Premium Light Double Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream (1/2-gal/1.89L; UPC 70422-24061; Plant #38-25; all date codes) due to the presence of undeclared peanut oil and soy lecithin. The recalled products were distributed in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International expands its earlier recall to include additional Mazuri® and LabDiet® animal feed products, because these products may contain elevated levels of vitamin D. The recalled products were distributed nationally in the USA and exported to customers in Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, Singapore, Chile and Uruguay.   • Animal Feed Safety Recall: Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC recalls Purina Fish Chow® Meal (50lb; Lot #May 05 12 1; Formula #5120), due to elevated levels of vitamin D. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Wellements LLC recalls Baby Move™ Prune Concentrate liquid dietary supplement (4 oz; UPC 729609019878; All lots up to and including Lot #12179), because one of the ingredients used in the product (Purimuni galacto-oligosaccharide) tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationwide from January 2012 to July 2012 through retail stores and online retailers.
  • Food Safety/Outbreak Alert: FDA warns consumers not to eat raw or partially cooked oysters and clams with tags listing Oyster Bay Harbor, Nassau County, New York as the harvest area, following reports of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses in several states. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation closed Oyster Bay Harbor to shellfish harvesting on July 13. Shellfish harvested from Oyster Bay Harbor were distributed in several states, including, but not necessarily limited to, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: TWI Foods Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Crispy Just Baked Punjabi Cookies (800g plastic clamshell pkgs; UPC 6 27265 00152 0), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Merrylynd Organics recalls Merrylynd Organics Maple Syrup – Medium (375 mL and 1L; Lots 12-1 and 12-2), due to the presence of heavy metal (lead) contamination. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Canada Safeway Ltd., Loblaw Companies Ltd. and The Product People Inc. recall Gills Onions Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00044 3; Best before 07/20/12), Gills Onions Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g; Lot code 22RAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00045 0; Best before 07/20/12) and Gills Onions Fresh Diced Celery & Onions (198g; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00046 7; Best before 07/20/12), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were imported from the USA and sold in Alberta (all three retailers), British Columbia (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Manitoba (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Northwest Territories (Canada Safeway), Ontario (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Quebec (Loblaw) and Saskatchewan (Canada Safeway and Loblaw).

The recall includes Aquamaz Grower 600 (50 lb; Formula 5D06), Catfish 32 (50 lb; Formula 51J2), Catfish Chow SR (50 lb; Formula #5136), Maz Koi Pond Nuggets (20 lb; Formula 5M78), Mazuri Guinea Pig Diet (25 lb; Formula 5664), Mazuri Ratite Diet (50 lb; Formula 5647), Mazuri Waterfowl Maint. (50 lb; Formula #5642), Nutrisource Koi Pond (6 x 4.5 lb; Formula 5ZC9; Best if used by 04/25/14, only), Wellsolve W/C (50 lb; Formula #35TD) and Maz Koi Platinum Nuggets (20 lb; Formula #5M80). The products were distributed at select Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply stores nationwide starting April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Westone Laboratories, Inc. recalls Oto-Ease® Ear Lubricant (All sizes and packaging configurations), after FDA sample analysis finds that the product is potentially contaminated with pathogenic bacteria and mold. The product was previous recalled in October 2011 within the USA and from Australia (without FDA knowledge). The recalled Ear Lubricant products were distributed hospitals, health professionals, and retailers nationwide and to Belgium, Greece, Canada, Thailand, Australia, Panama, Singapore, Russian Federation, Ireland, The Philippines, France, Korea, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Sweden.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Melinda’s Biscotti (Sidney, BC) recalls Melinda’s Biscotti brand Almond Biscotti (240g pkgs; UPC 8 75281 00030 4; BEST BEFORE code of NOV 2012, DEC 2012, or JAN 2013), due to the presence of undeclared wheat and milk. The recalled product was distributed only in British Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Pan Asia Food Co. Ltd. recalls Lotte Choco Pie (168g; Best before 13.11.2012 and 12.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 161881) and Lotte Choco Pie (336g; Best before 14.11.2011, 03.02.2012, 12.11.2012, and 06.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 160709), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled products were sold in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (BC) recalls Lotte Choco Pie (336g; Code 13.02.2012 B4 12.02.2013; UPC 8 801062 160709), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts. The recalled products were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): La Société Gabriel Coulet SA recalls Cora/Winny brands of Roquefort cheese (150g; Lot 120406156; Best before 08/09/2012, 29/09/2012 and 06/10/2012), due to contamination with Escherichia coli O26:H11, a shigatoxin-producing strain of E. coli. The recalled cheese was sold in Match, Smatch and Match Food and More stores.
  • Food Safety Alert (UK): BBC reports that trade in Ribble Estuary cockles has been banned until further notice by the West Lancashire Environmental Health Department, after cockles from the estuary were found to contain dangerous levels of E. coli and other fecal coliform bacteria.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Fruiti Pops, Inc. recalls Fruiti Pops Classic Coconut Frozen Dessert Bars (4-oz bars; UPC 763734 000011; No lot numbers or expiration dates), due to the presence of undeclared egg yolk. The recalled bars were sold by push cart vendors and ice cream trucks in Southern California between June 25, 2012 and June 28, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Andante Dairy (Petaluma, CA) recalls Andante Dairy Cheese (sizes from 5 oz to 8 oz; No code dates or variety information on packages), due to a lack of proper pasteurization. Andante Dairy cheeses, except for Musette, Tomme Dolce and Etude varieties, are under a quarantine order, as the lack of proper pasteurization could have allowed the survival of dangerous pathogens. The cheeses were sold mainly to retail markets, restaurants and cheese shops in California, with very limited distribution in Chicago and New York.
  • Animal Feed Safety  Recall: PMI Nutrition Intl., LLC (Brentwood, MO) recalls LabDiet® Guinea Pig Diet (50lb; Formula No. 5025; Lot No. APR17122), Mazuri® Maned Wolf Diet (33lb; Formula No. 5MD9; Lot #APR21122), Mazuri® Small Bird Maintenance (25lb; Formula #56A6; Lot #APR15123), and Mazuri® Primate Maintenance Biscuit (25lb; Formula #5MA2; Lot #APR22122), due to the potential for an elevated Vitamin D level in these products. The recalled products were manufactured at the company’s Richmond, IN feed plant and were distributed throughout the USA and to a few international customers.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): The Co-op recalls Co-operative Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Peruvian Dark Chocolate with Dried Sweetened Cranberries (Best before 1 February 2013 and 2 February 2013), because the products contain milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate.
  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Stella’s Bakery recalls Romkugler (300g; 5 pcs), Tree trunks (350g; 4 pcs), Butter Tart (400g), Cinnamon Tang (350g), and Day/Night Rivets (350g; 4 pcs) with production dates of 3 July 2012 or earlier, due to the presence of undeclared milk powder.
  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): Britvic Soft Drinks UK recalls Robinsons Fruit Shoot and Fruit Shoot Hydro packs featuring the new Magicap (All batch codes and best before dates), because the caps may become fully or partially detached. The recalled product was not distributed directly in Ireland, but some retailers may have bought affected packs from Northern Ireland or the UK.
  • Food Safety Recall (Multiple countries): Britvic International recalls Teisseire Fruit Shoot (20 cl; Best before 02-2013 and 03-2013) due to a technical problem with the bottle caps. The product was sold in Belgium and France beginning in June 2012 in individual bottles and in multi-packs.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Dansk Supermarked Indkøb recalls ATCO Hazelnuts (200g plastic bags; Lot 2384; Best before 31/10-2012; Product of Germany), due to mold growth in individual bags of the hazelnut kernels.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Auchan and Simply Market recall Pouce brand Sardines in tomato sauce (120g; Best before 20/01/2015, 21/01/2015 and 26/01/2015), because the products may contain histamine.
  • Outbreak Alert (France): Health authorities have received reports of eight cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and four cases of bloody diarrhea since May 28th in Aquitaine and Poitou-Charentes. All eight HUS victims are children; 6 of them are confirmed to be infected with E. coli O157. Seven of the eight HUS cases are residents of Aquitaine. All of the 12 outbreak victims reported having consumed ground beef – in most cases, purchased at Intermarché or Netto stores.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0916): Benzalkonium chloride in dietary food supplement from Slovakia, via the Czech Republic; distributed to Poland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0917): Dead mouse in pizza from Italy; distributed to Italy and Japan.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0918): Mold infestation in hazelnut kernels from Germany; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.0919): Unauthorized 1,3 dimethylamylamine in food supplement from the USA; distributed to Finland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0921): Didecyldimethylammonium chloride in chilled citrus fruit from South Africa; distributed to France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0923): Salmonella in beef meat from the Netherlands; distributed to Sweden.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Coles Supermarkets recalls Coles Lite Sour Cream (300ml plastic tub; Use by 02/08/12), due to E. coli contamination. the recalled product was sold in Coles Supermarkets in Western Australia only.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Cuba): Cuba’s Health Ministry has confirmed that three people have died and 53 more are infected in a cholera outbreak in the south-east part of the country. BBC News reports that about 1,000 people have received medical attention so far – most of them from the town of Manzanillo.
