  • Allergy Alert Update (Retail Distribution): USDA publishes list of retail consignees for frozen meat and poultry products recalled by Homestead Pasta Company due to mislabeling and the presence of undeclared whey.
  • Food Recall (Labeling): Manufacturer recalls Organic Valley Lightly Salted Butter, 1lb., because the boxes contain salted butter instead of lightly salted butter.
  • Food Recall/Allergy Alert (Labeling): Lettieri’s Foods, Inc. (Shakopee, MN) recalls Lettieri’s Breakfast Stackers Sausage, Egg & Cheese within a flakey biscuit and Real Time Café Breakfast Stacker Sausage, Egg & Cheese within a flakey pastry, because the products contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is not declared on the label.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Calisson Inc. (Dana Point, CA) recalls Cool-it Soother by Vulli teething rings (manufactured in France), due to an ingestion hazard.
Canada
  • Allergy Alert: Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) advises individuals who are allergic to milk proteins not to consume Pâté des fêtes (all packages that do not mention the presence of butter) sold frozen at Avril Supermarket Santé (Brossard, QC), because the products contain undeclared butter.
  • Allergy Alert: MAPAQ advises individuals who are allergic to milk or soy proteins not to consume the following items, sold at Mini Géneral IV (Châteauguay, QC), because they may contain undeclared milk or soy proteins: Hamburger steak (milk), Pâté chinois (soy), and Pâté au poulet (soy).
Europe
  • Allergy Alert (France): Auchan recalls Auchan brand Purée de pommes de terre et carottes (300g microwave bowl; Best by 17.11.2011), because some of the packages may contain Mexican tuna salad instead of potato and carrot purée.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0028): Cadmium in frozen crabs (Portunus trituberculatus) from China; distributed to Italy.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.0029): Aflatoxins in sorghum from Egypt; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.0031): Carbendazim in yams from Ghana; distributed to the United Kingdom.

  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2011.0040): Unauthorized gold and silver in food supplement from France; distributed to Spain.
Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Safety Alert (South Korea): The Incheon Regional Food and Drug Administration has charged the unauthorized manufacturer and seller of fresh juice with violations of the Food Sanitation Law after detecting excessive bacteria (up to 16 times the permitted limit) in the juice.
  • Dietary Supplement Warning (Hong Kong): The Department of Health urges the public not to use C M Factor brand of slimming product, because it has been found to contain an analogue of the controlled ingredient, sibutramine.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Philippines): FDA warns the public that food/dietary supplements are not approved medicines and should not be used to treat any type of pain.

United States
  • Food Safety Recall: Surtex Foods Co. recalls La Original brand Oaxaca String Cheese (Lot #1360912; Expiration date 01/09/2011), because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. The product was distributed in California through retrail stores and distributors.
  • Food Safety Recall: One Great Burger (Elizabeth, NJ) recalls OneGreat Hamburgers (Item #02044; Est. 34575; Produced between Jan. 2010 and May 2010; Packed on dates July 2010 to Nov. 2010), because these ground beef products may have become spoiled. The problem was discovered during an investigation by FSIS into customer complaints of discoloration and off-odors.
  • Food Safety Recall (Update): Sprouters Northwest, Inc. recalls all of its clover sprouts and clover sprout mixes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall includes Clover Sprouts, Clover Onion Sprouts, Deli Sprouts, Spicy Sprouts and Brocco Sandwich Sprouts with a “best by” date of 1/16/11 and earlier. Sprouters Northwest has suspended production of these products while FDA and the company investigate the source of the problem. The recalled clover sprout products were distributed in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska through wholesale distribution and retail chains.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Benz’s Food Products, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY) that an October 2010 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Inter-Ocean Seafood Traders, Inc. (San Carlos, CA) that a November 2010 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
Canada
  • Allergy Alert (Update): Seoul Trading Corporation updates its January 7, 2011 warning to correct the Lot Code for Choripdong brand Vegetable Dumpling. The corrected Lot Code is 2012.05.28D.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ferme G.M.H. Inc (Saint-Christophe-d’Arthabaska, QC) recalls unlabeled fresh or frozen cheese, offered in blocks (approx 450g) or grains, because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes or Staphylococcus aureus.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall: Shandex Sales Group recalls alcohol swabs, because they may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus. The recalled swabs were distributed across Canada under the following store brands: Remedy Rx (Remedy Rx stores), Uniprix/Option+(Uniprix and PharmaChoice), Life Brand (Shoppers Drug Mart), Equate Walmart), Personelle (Jean Coutu), Rexall (Katz Group stores) and Exact (Loblaws).
Europe
  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Celtic Chocolates Ltd. recalls Celtic Dairy Free Bars (35g x 6 pack; Batch Codes L10349 and L10350; Best Before December 2011), because they contain casein (a milk protein) which was not declared on the label.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Maysum withdraws Maysum Meat Samosas, 675g (Best before 19 November 2011; Batch code 318102010), because the product contains undeclared sulphur dioxide.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd withdraws Sainsbury’s Free From Mint Crisps, 150g (Best before end February 2012) and Celtic Caramel Choices, 120g (Best before end August 2011), because the products contain undeclared milk.
Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands
  • Food Labeling Alert (Taiwan): Taipei’s Health Department advises the public that 12 out of 13 goat’s milk tablet products tested by the Department were found to contain a significant proportion of cow’s milk.
  • OTC Product Safety Recall Update (Hong Kong): The Hong Kong Department of Health has agreed to allow one brand of Abbott’s glucose test strips, Optium Omega, to re-enter the market.

  • Allergy Alert: Kroger recalls Kroger Value Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips, 12 oz, because the product may contain undeclared milk. The recalled chocolate chips were sold in Kroger, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Food 4 Less Midwest, Fry’s, Jay C, Ralphs and Smith’s grocery stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: La Placita Botanas Mexicanas, Inc. (South El Monte, CA) recalls Wheat Snacks with Chile, Potato Chips with Chile, and Corn Churritos with Chile (no production codes, best-by dates or use-by dates are displayed on the packages), after FDA detected Salmonella in during sampling of the company’s bulk ingredients. No illnesses have been reported to date, and the identity and source of the contaminated bulk ingredient has not been revealed.
  • OTC Topical Product Safety Recall Update: Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals advises that Triad alcohol prep pads packaged for use in the U.S. with Betaseron, have been recalled by the manufacturer due to contamination with Bacillus cereus. Betaseron is not affected by the recall, but the enclosed Triad prep pads should not be used.
Europe

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): United World Foods Ltd. recalls Sea Cuisine Brand 41/50 grade Raw Prawn Cutlets (1 kg; Best before 30 October 2012), after the product tests positive for Salmonella. The recalled raw prawns were distributed in Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown Supermarkets in all areas North of Taupo.
