United States

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: J.B. Meats recalls 72,800 pounds of ground beef and ground beef patties (various size packages; Ohio Dept. of Agriculture Est. 1188; Date code Aug 18, 2010 through Aug 18, 2011), because the ground beef products may be linked to two cases of E. coli o157:H7 illnesses in Cincinnati, OH. The recalled meat was supplied to unnamed restaurants in the Cincinnati area.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg illnesses linked to contaminated ground turkey meat from Cargill has expanded to include 111 confirmed cases in 31 states. An additional case reported on August 15th by Montana is not reflected in these totals, bringing the revised numbers to 112 confirmed cases in 32 states. Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Overwaitea Food Group LP recalls Berliner Rye Bread (567g; Best before Aug. 12 11), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds.
  • Allergy Alert: Double Food Trading recalls Tapioca Starch Pearls (1 kg; no codes) due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Food Safety Recall: Beverly Meats (1995) Ltd. recalls ready-to-eat Smoked Garlic Sausage (no date codes or lot numbers; sold on or after August 4, 2011), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold only at Beverly Meats (1995) Ltd., 4018-118 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Food Safety Recall: Afroleck Inc. recalls NDEYE Arachide en Poudre NoFlaye (300g; Best before 30 AU 2011), due to contamination with aflatoxin.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Rieber & Son Denmark A/S recalls K-Salat Ham Salad (1 kg; Best before 5/9/2011) because shrimp was accidentally mixed into the salad, which presents a danger to consumers who are allergic to shellfish.
  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Natural Resources recalls Doves Farm Chocolate Chip Cookies (150g; Product of Great Britain; Batch code 1080) because the product contains undeclared milk.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (UK): The outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Phage Type 14b that was linked to the consumption of contaminated eggs from a poultry farm in Spain has grown to included 245 confirmed cases. Most of the cases were reported from North West England (107), the West Midlands (37), Yorkshire & Humberside (32) and the East Midlands (28).

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (New Zealand): Frucor Beverages recalls V Iced Coffee (470ml glass bottle; all batches/expiry dates up to August 18, 2011), after discovering glass in a bottle.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration warns Australians that Slimina Weightloss Capsules, marketed as 100% herbal in origin and sold over the internet, have been found to contain therapeutic quantities of sibutramine – formerly a prescription-only medicine supplied in Australia until it was withdrawn in October 2010 due to safety concerns, particularly in patients with history of cardiovascular disease.

  • Allergy Alert: Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (Jacksonville, FL) recalls Winn-Dixie Choco Charm Chocolate Drink (128-oz clear plastic bottle with yellow cap) because the product may contain undeclared wheat. The recalled chocolate drink was sold in Winn-Dixie and SaveRite stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that at least 13 people – including two residents of Maryland – were infected with E. coli O157:H7 as a result of swimming in the lake at Cowans Gap State Park.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): The importers of Flavor Full Black Sesame Spread (Manufactured in Taiwan by Flavor Full Foods Inc.; Best before May 19, 2012) and Kimian Sweet Sauce (Manufactured in Taiwan by Kimian Foods Co. Ltd.; Best before May 9, 2014) recall the indicated prodcuts after they were found to contain the plasticiser DBP.
  • Proprietary Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Bio-Tech Chinese Medicine Laboratory Ltd. recalls Pancre-Plus, a fake proprietary Chinese medicine, after the Department of Health determines that the product contains two undeclared western drugs – glibenclamide and phenformin.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Bayer Healthcare Limited recalls Contour and Contour TS glucose test strips (all batches) after routine testing by the company determined that strips from half of the bottles produced falsely low blood glucose readings. The defect is thought to be due to an interaction of the strips with the gas trapped inside the bottles.

  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Philadelphia International Airport that a May 2011 inspection of the aircraft servicing areas and watering points revealed significant violations of the Interstate Conveyance Sanitation regulations under the Public Health Service Act. In consequence, the watering point and aircraft service area at Philadelphia International Airport has been changed to “Provisional” from “Approved.”
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Sivertson Fisheries Inc. dba Lake Superior Fish Company (Superior, WI) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Porky Products Inc. (Carteret, NJ) that an April-May 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Best Chocolate in Town (Indianapolis, IN) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s food facility revealed significant violations of the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Deshaies’ Associates, Inc. dba Deshaies’ Lobster Salad (Lewiston, ME) that an April-May 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Grand Cakes, Inc. (Bayamon, PR) that a January/February 2011 inpsection of the company’s bakery product manufacturing facility revealed significant labeling violations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns JJ Cake & Pastry, Corp. (Cidra, PR) that a January-February 2011 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Food (CGMP) regulations.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Musco Foods Corporation (Maspeth, NY) that a March-April 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

  • Allergy Alert: Seoul Trading Corporation (ON) recalls Haioreum Roasted Hot Pepper Paste (500g; Code 2012.03.10), due to the presence of undeclared sesame seeds and soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Dai Jung Distributing recalls Lee Lemon Grass from Fresh Stems (200g; all codes) due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nostrano Inc. recalls Nostrano Cooked Mild Capicollo (variable weight; Lot L20708), due to contamination with Listeria.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ocean Food Company Ltd. (Toronto, ON) recalls a number of Ocean Food brand surimi-based products (Best before dates up to and including October 18, 2011; please navigate to recall notice for list of affected products), because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Also recalled is Ocean Food Chikuwa – Fish Cake (125g; Best before dates up to and including August 29, 2011).
  • Food Recall: Nestle Canada Inc. recalls Stouffer’s Bistro Stuffed Crust Pepperoni Pizzeria, incorrectly labelled as “Stuffed Crust 3 Cheese Pizzeria” (210g; Code #1007 5446 17A 99), due to incorrect labeling.

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Dove Farm Foods Limited withdraws Doves Farm Chocolate Chip Cookies with dark chocolate chips (150g; Batch code 1080; Best before 21/09/11), because the product has been found to contain undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Hilton Foods A/S Denmark recalls Minced pork 9-15% (600g; Batch #400107304B; Produced 11/8/2011/ Best before 19/8/2011) because Salmonella was found in the product.
