  • Allergy Alert: Jerry’s Foods (Annandale, MN) recalls County Market Beef Summer Sausage and County Market Beef Summer Sausage with Jalapenos (12-oz chub; use by/sell by date of 9/10/11), because the product contains undeclared whey and soy. The recalled sausage was sold at a retail store owned by Jerry’s Foods in Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Alert: Ripley County Health Department seizes 2,000 pounds of perishable food after a routine truck inspection in Indiana reveals inoperative refrigeration unit, tainted meat.
  • Shellfish Harvest Areas Closed (New York State): The Department of Environmental Conservation has temporarily closed shellfish harvesting areas in Nassau and Suffolk Counties due to storm runoff water following record-setting rainfall around Long Island.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Quayside Bakery withdraws Bakestone Fruited Scones (4-pack and 6-pack; All date codes between 10 August and 18 August 2011, inclusive), because the product contains undeclared milk.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (UK): Health officials in south east Wales are investigating a possible eighth case of E. coli o157 in the outbreak linked to the Adonis Kebab House in Cardiff. Separately, BBC reports that the restaurant was inspected last month and received a score of just 1 out of 5 (5 out of 5 is best). Restaurants are not obliged to post their hygiene inspection scores.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1099): Arsenic and lead in calabash chalk from Ghana; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1100): Excessive Ponceau 4R/cochineal red A in strawberry drink from Australia; distributed to Cyprus.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1101): Histamine in canned tuna in olive oil from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1103): Salmonella Agona in beef meat for pet food from Poland; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1104): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from Denmark; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1105): Undeclared celery in vegetable mix from France; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1106): Glass fragments in different mineral waters from Germany; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1107): Listeria monocytogenes in ham from Italy; distributed to Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1108): Parasitic infestation with nematodes of frozen Barrakuda fillet from New Zealand; distributed to Bulgaria.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Health Supplement Safety Advisory (Australia): Some Australian consumers may have purchased the product Sexcellence sachets over the internet. While the label of this product claims the ingredients to be 100% Natural, analysis has confirmed the presence of two derivatives of sulfosildenafil – a derivative of the active agent in Viagra – in these sachets.

  • Allergy Alert: Whole Foods Market recalls Whole Foods Market Stout Beer Marinade and Whole Foods Market Lager Beer Marinade (15 oz plastic bottles; sold between July 3 and August 3, 2011), because the marinades contain undeclared wheat and soy. The recalled products were sold in Whole Foods Market stores in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington (DC) and New Jersey (Princeton and Marlton stores only).
  • Food Safety Recall: Winn-Dixie recalls certain ground chuck products (sell by dates from 7/31/11 to 8/12/11, inclusive), supplied by National Beef Packing Co. LLC, as the recalled products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled products include Winn-Dixie Ground Chuck, Ground Chuck Family Pack, Ground Chuck Patties and Ground Chuck Patties Family Pack, and were sold in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
  • Food Safety Recall: Publix Super Markets recalls various products containing ground chuck (Sell by dates between July 25 and August 12, 2011) supplied by National Beef Packing Co. LLC, as the recalled products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled items (please navigate to recall notice for complete list) were sold in Publix grocery stores in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, and in the following Florida counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Leon, Swannee, Columbia, Alachua, Marion, Putnam, Clay, Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Duval and Nassau.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Co. recalls certain products containing ground beef supplied by National Beef Packing Co. LLC, because the recalled products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled items include Kroger Flavorseal Ground Chuck (5-lb. pkg; Freeze by 8-12-2011), Kroger Beef Chuck Ground 80-85%; Ground Beef Patties – Regular and Family Pack, Ground Beef Seasoned Patties – Regular and Family Pack; In store Made Meatballs – packaged and service case, and In Store Made Meatloaf – packaged and service case (except as otherwise noted, Sell-by dates for all recalled products are July 29 through August 12). The recalled items were sold in Kroger stores in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.
  • Food Safety Recall: Walmart recalls certain ground beef products supplied by National Beef Packing Co. LLC, because the recalled products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled items were sold at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores, and include the following: National Beef 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck chubs (10-lb, 5-lb, and 3-lb chubs; produced on July 23, 2011; Freeze-by date of August 12, 2011 ), National Beef 81/19 Fine Ground Beef chubs (10-lb; Produced July 25, 2011; Freeze-by August 14, 2011), National Beef 90/10 Fine Ground Beef chubs (10-lb; Produced July 25, 2011; Freeze-by August 14, 2011), and National Beef 86/14 Fine Ground Round (10-lb; Produced July 25, 2011; Freeze-by August 14, 2011).

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: My Country Delicatessen Limited recalls ready-to-eat meats purchased from the deli counter at My Country Delicatessen Limited, 4351 Queen Street, Niagara Falls, ON, on or before August 10, 2011, because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Somalia): The World Health Organization reports that the number of cases of suspected cholera is rising in and around Mogadishu. In addition, cases of watery diarrhea are on the increase, with 4,272 acute cases reported in Mogadishu’s Banadir Hospital, alone. Three-quarters of the cases are among children under the age of five.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): Fifteen people were admitted to hospital in Thane in a suspected outbreak of food poisoning after consuming prasad at home.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet LLC recalls Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet Classic Cheddar Cheese Spread (8 oz glass jars; Best by December 23, 2011; Batch code 0116206G113; distributed between 8/1/11 and 8/10/11), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed to Kroger Stores in Roanoke, Virginia; Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; and Memphis, Tennessee.
  • Food Recall: T. Marzetti recalls Cardini’s Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad Dressing (12 oz; Best by 041312K & 061512K), Girard’s Light Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette, and White Balsamic Vinaigrette (12 oz; Best by 050612K to 060512K) and Marzetti Italian Blue Cheese Vinaigrette, Light Raspberry Cabernet Vinaigrette, Strawberry Chardonnay Vinaigrette, and White Balsamic Vinaigrette (12 oz; Best by 012012K to 030912K), due to premature spoilage as a result of yeast growth.
  • Food Safety Alert/Recall: Washington State Department of Health warns the public that Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) biotoxin has been detected in shellfish from the Sequim Bay area. Sequim Bay has been closed to commercial and recreational shellfish harvesting, and the public is urged not to eat shellfish from that area until further notice. All commercially sold products from the area dating back to August 1st have been recalled and accounted for. DSP biotoxin is heat-stable and cannot be destroyed by cooking the shellfish.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Bellevue Patch reports that county health inspectors closed the Marinepolis Sushi Land in downtown Bellevue after two separate cases of Salmonella were linked back to the restaurant.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert Update: Fresh strawberries from Jaquith Strawberry Farm in Newberg, Oregon have been identified as the source of an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 that has expanded to at least 15 people. Seven of the outbreak victims were hospitalized and one elderly woman in Washington County died from kidney failure. Please follow this live link to the list of locations known to have sold strawberries from Jaquith Strawberry Farm. If you purchased strawberries from one of these locations during the indicated dates and have any left over (perhaps in your freezer), please destroy them.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Belgium): La société Générale de Conserve recalls Saint Eloi brand Légumes pour couscous (800g can; Best before 30/11/2013 and 30/11/2014; Lot codes beginning with R2H and N2H), due to the presence of undeclared celery. The recalled product was sold in Intermarché and Ecomarché stores.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (UK): The Salmonella Enteritidis Phage Type 14b outbreak linked to consumption of eggs imported from Spain has grown to 221 confirmed cases, mostly from North West England (104), the West Midlands (36) and the East Midlands (26). The implicated eggs all were produced from a single shed on one Spanish poultry farm. The farm has culled the flock of hens, cleaned the shed and heat-treated the remaining eggs to destroy Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1091): Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in parsley stipes from Egypt; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1092): Listeria monocytogenes in salami from Italy; distributed to Germany.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1093): Undeclared gluten in seeds mixture packaged in Italy; distributed to Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1094): Undeclared peanut in vanilla ice cream from Poland; distributed to the Czech Republic.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1095): Salmonella Mbandaka in soybean meal from Italy; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1096): Benzo(a)pyrene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sesame (peeled) from Nigeria; distributed to Austria, Germany and Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1097): E. coli in mussels from Italy; distributed to the Czech Republic; Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1098): Pseudomonas aeruginosa in still spring water from Poland; distributed to Poland.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): GlaxoSmithKline Ltd. recalls Coldrex+C Tablet 20’s (Batch No. XPN161R), because the Chinese-language dosing instructions contain an error.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Australia Pty Ltd. recalls Coles Bakery Fresh Sticky Date Cookies (4-pak; Best before 11 AUG 11 to 16 AUG 11, inclusive), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts. The recalled product was sold at a single Coles Supermarket in Rosebud, VIC.
  • Health Alert (Australia): The Victoria Department of Health warns the public that some Ayurvedic medicines imported from India have been found to contain high levels of lead. The department has received notifications of three cases of elevated blood lead levels in the past 18 months in patients who use traditional Ayurvedic medicines from India.
