United States

  • Allergy Alert: Bay Valley Foods (Oak Brook, IL) recalls Naturally Fresh® Roasted & Glazed Pecan Pieces Salad Toppings (3.5-oz pouch-type package; UPC (0)7653905520(0); Best by 07 APR 13 and 08 APR 13), because some of the packages may contain undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed between June 26, 2012, and August 22, 2012, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, including in Kroger stores (Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Knoxville, Tennessee, Greater Memphis, TN, Arkansas, Mississippi and Western Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana) and in Publix.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal: Protica, Inc. (Whitehall, PA) withdraws Body Choice Protein Shots (3-oz vial; Manufacture date Dec 20, 2011; Lot #PP 3541 2924), Nutritional Resources Protein Wave gelatin (6-oz cup; Manufacture date May 03 2012; Lot #PP 1242 6123) ProBalance Protein to Go French Vanilla Latte (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 9/8/2011, 10/11/2011, 10/18/2011, 12/6/2011, 2/13/2012, 4/2/2012, 4/4/2012, 4/11/2012, 4/24/2012, 5/1/2012, 5/8/2012, 6/8/2012) and Protein to Go Milk Chocolate Shake (2.5-oz bottle; Manufacture dates 2/9/12, 2/13/12, 2/16/12, 4/12/12, 4/25/12, 5/3/12, 5/8/12), because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The products were distributed nationally through retail and direct mail.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: North American Produce Sales (Vancouver, BC) recalls Mangoes (Product of Mexico; Individual fruit bearing PLU #4959; Sold between July 12th and August 14th), because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup. Several confirmed illnesses are associated with the consumption of the mangoes. The recalled fruit may have been was sold at various retail stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fine Choice Foods Ltd. recalls Sum-m! Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls (Lot #3045; Production date July 11th; Expiry date August 22nd), due to two reports of a customer finding small pieces of aluminum in the product. The recalled Spring Rolls were sold at Costco Wholesale outlets in Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert (PEI): CBC reports that the PEI Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness – suspected to be due to norovirus – at the Stanhope Beach Resort and Conference Centre. Approximately 60 people complained of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or diarrhea after attending events at the resort. Test results are pending.

Europe

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health asks the public not to buy or consume the unregistered proprietary Chinese medicine “Quan Xie Jin Gu Tong,” as it may contain the undeclared Western drug ingredients diclofenac, piroxicam and prednisone acetate.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1220): Benzalkonium chloride in passion fruit juice powder from Germany; distributed to Denmark, Germany, Japan and Sweden.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): More than 110 residents of the Darfield area have developed gastroenteritis after drinking contaminated water. The Selwyn District Council issued a boil-water notice after E. coli was found in some parts of the Waimakariri River. Six of the outbreak victims have been confirmed to be suffering from Campylobacter infections.

  • Allergy Alert: JFC International Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) recalls JFC Furikake-Seto Fumi (1.7 oz; Lot code best before 04.05.2014; UPC 0 11152 41464), due to the presence of undeclared egg yolk, soybeans and wheat. The recalled product is distributed nationwide through retail stores, including QFC, and/or on-line web stores.
  • Allergy Alert: Optima Distributors Ltd (Ridgewood, NY) recalls Del Campo brand Dried Potato (14 oz plastic bag; Product of Peru; Date code S 2012; UPC 8-91728-00021-8), due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. The recalled product was distributed in the New York City metro area.
  • Food Safety Recall: Kroger informs its customers that Spence & Co. Smoked Salmon Trim (8-oz pkg) has been recalled by the manufacturer due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled product was sold in Kroger stores located in Greater Cincinnati, including Northern Kentucky, Dayton, OH and South Eastern Indiana; King Soopers and City Market stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: American Licorice Co. (Union City, CA) recalls Red Vines Black Licorice Twists Candy (1 lb/453g pkg; All code dates) due to unacceptable levels of lead. The recalled candy was sold throughout California.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: California Department of Public Health releases California retail distribution list for Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce, recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled Romaine Lettuce was sold in Wal-Mart stores throughout California, Safeway stores in Northern California, and Pak ‘N Save stores in Emeryville, Madera, Oakland, San Leandro, and South San Francisco.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: FDA initiates seizure of various food products in the warehouse owned by San Francisco Herb & Natural Food Company, after agency inspectors find significant insanitary conditions, including live and dead rodents in and around food products and apparent rodent nesting materials in food.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert: FDA warns consumers about the potential health risks of Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium, marketed as natural dietary supplements for treating a variety of conditions. These products contain the active pharmaceutical ingredients dexamethasone, diclofenac sodium, and/or methocarbamol, none of which are listed on the product labels. The products are manufactured in Mexico by Riger Naturals and sold in the US in some retail outlets, at flea markets and on various internet sites.
  • Food Safety Alert: USDA suspends Central Valley Meat for humane handling violations, effectively halting slaughter operations.
  • Food Withdrawal: Suncore Products, LLC withdraws WhoNu?® Vanilla Wafers (Use by dates prior to February 9, 2013) after receiving reports of off-odor and off-flavor.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Raphaville International Ltd. recalls Erom Dr. Hwang’s Black Soy and Rice Drink (16 x 190 mL; All codes; UPC 8 809111 699712), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Allergy Alert: TWI Foods, Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Crispy Just Baked brand Almond Cookies, Coconut Cookies, and Pistachio Cookies (800g and 1.135 kg/2.5 lb pkgs; all codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Alpha Meat Packers Ltd. recalls Alpha Meat Packers Ltd. Veal Cutlets Tenderized (various kg; Code 177363) and Veal for Scalopini (various kg; Code 177425), due to contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled veal products were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Sakellis Foods recalls Sakellis Foods Basil Leaves (2 lb; Sold on or after July 25, 2012), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled basil leaves were distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dollarama Inc. recalls Peppermint Mints, Sour Fruit Mints, and Wintergreen Mints (43g; All codes) due to the presence of extraneous material (metal). The recalled products were sold nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Fine Choice Foods Ltd recalls Western Family Vegetable Spring Rolls 6 Pieces (340g; Best before Aug 25 2012 L 3045) and Sum-mi 18 Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls (1 kg; Best before Aug 22 2012 L 3045), due to the presence of extraneous material (metal). The recalled products were sold nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: WN Pharmaceuticals Ltd. recalls Webber Naturals Organic Chianutra Chia Seeds (450 g; various lot numbers/expiration dates), due to the presence of insect contamination. The recalled product was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Tanimura & Antle brand Romaine Lettuce (product of USA; UPC 0 27918 20314 9), recalled by the producer after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found E. coli o157:H7 in a sample, was distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon by The Grocery People Ltd.  and by Martin’s Produce Sales Ltd.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis at a residential child care centre in Wan Chai district. Four staff members and 17 babies are suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. Two of the babies were admitted to Queen Mary hospital.

  • Allergy Alert: Bi-Lo recalls Southern Home® Cranberry Nut Antioxidant Blend Trail Mix (16-oz bag; UPC 0788003039; Best by March 12, 2013), due to the presence of undeclared soy lecithin. The recalled product was sold in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
  • Food Safety Recall: Real Mex Foods (Vernon, CA) recalls El Torito Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad Kits (36-oz trays and 18-lb cases containing 8 x 36-oz trays; Est P-4140; Sell by 08/23/12, 08/30/12, 09/06/12 and 09/14/12; Item #24203), because the dressing contains cilantro that was recalled by Fresco Green Farms Inc. due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled products were produced between July 23rd and August 6th and distributed to Costco stores in California and in the Reno, Nevada area.
  • Food Recall: On-Cor Frozen Foods (Geneva, IL) recalls On-Cor Gravy & 6 Salisbury Steaks made with chicken, pork and beef, Family Size (28-oz packages; Best by Jul 09 2013, 1912 11:__ EST 1044G), because frozen boneless rib-shaped patties with barbecue sauce may have been mispackaged and labeled as Salisbury steak products. The recalled item was distributed to retail establishments in Iowa.
  • Outbreak Alert (Washington State): Thirty cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus infections have been reported this summer, according to the state’s Department of Health. Commercial growing ares in Totten Inlet near Olympia, North Bay, and Dabob Bay in north Hood Canal have been closed for the rest of the summer due to the presence of Vibrio in the shellfish growing areas.
  • Outbreak Alert: CDC and several state departments of health are investigative an outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium that has killed two people and sickened 141 people nationwide. Illnesses are reported in Kentucky (50), Indiana (14), Tennessee (6), Minnesota (3) and Ohio (3); other states have yet to confirm illnesses. The outbreak has been linked to cantaloupe grown in Southwestern Indiana.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Pure Hothouse Foods Inc. (Leamington, ON) recalls Pure Flavor brand Freshly Cut Grillers (14-oz/400g trays; Upse by August 11, 2012 through August 26, 2012; Premium Medley, Asparagus Blend, Rustic Blend, and Steak Topper varieties), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Christan Mark recalls Venetian Gold Leeks (6g; Code 161/11; UPC 7 73643 10103 7) due to extraneous material (insect) contamination. The recalled product was sold nationwide.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Herbal Supplement Safety Advisory (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) advises consumers that MMC Maxman IV Erection enhancer capsules pose a serious health risk and should not be taken. TGA lab tests have detected the presence of the prescription substance sildenafil in the product. Commercial supply of this product is illegal, as the product has not been assessed by TGA for quality, safety or efficacy, and the place of manufacture is not approved by TGA.
