OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC reports 12 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections in 6 states, with 5 people hospitalized due to the severity of their illness. The outbreak has been tentatively linked to consumption of Tanimura & Antle Romaine lettuce. The company initiated a recall after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered a positive sample as part of its routine testing program.

Allergy Alert: Tree of Life Canada ULC recalls Sharwood’s brand Tikka Curry Paste (255 ml; Expiry MAY 2021; UPC 7 56781 00292 3) due to undeclared mustard.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues a public health alert for TAKE HOME MEALS SPAGHETTI & MEATBALLS IN MARINARA SAUCE (15.5 oz; EXP DATE 10/25/20 – 11/9/20) due to foreign matter (metal) contamination. A recall was not requested because it is believed that the products are no longer available for consumers to purchase.

Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT: PHAC is reporting an outbreak of 11 confirmed cases of Salmonella Typhimurium illness in  Alberta (4), Saskatchewan (1), and Quebec (6). The outbreak is linked to contact with pet hedgehogs. The outbreak strain has a similar genetic fingerprint to the hedgehog-linked Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak under investigation in the United States.

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC reports 55 cases of Salmonella Stanley infections (6 hospitalizations) in 12 states linked to consumption of wood ear mushrooms distributed by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. CDC believes this outbreak is now over, and FDA has completed its investigation.

Food Safety Recall: Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc. recalls Natural Grocers Brand Organic Whole Elderberries (4 oz; Pack dates 20-216, 20-225, 20-246, 20-265 & 20-281) due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Pet Food Safety Recall: Grassland Beef recalls Dr. Siegel’s S. A. F. E. Petfood, Ground Beef 70% Lean / 30% Fat Net Wt.: 2 lb 18841 (Batch code 20157) due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The recalled product was shipped directly to consumers nationwide and one retail location in Florida.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Fresh Express Inc – Div of Chiquita Brands following investigation into a 2020 Cyclospora outbreak linked to the company’s bagged salad mixes. During its investigation, FDA recovered Cyclospora cayetanensis from two samples collected to the north and south of where the farm accessed canal water for seepage irrigation. FDA also experienced delays in receiving requested documents from Fresh Express that were needed to conduct the traceback investigation.
