United States

  • Allergy Alert: ALDI recalls Carlini Baking Spray (5-oz) due to incorrect gluten-free labeling). The recalled product was an ALDI Special Buy that was available in stores beginning Oct 28, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Food Source L.P. (McKinney, TX) recalls Bremer Party Size White Meat Chicken Enchiladas (57-oz boxes; Ext P-13130; UPC 0-41498-16921-3; Best by 09/30/13), because the product may contain plastic fragments. The recalled product was packaged August 31, 2012 and  shipped to retail stores in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wegmans recalls Wegmans Pumpkin Roll (21-oz whole roll, 10-oz half-roll, 6-oz 2-slices; UPC 77890-00686, 77890-36693, 77890-36684, respectively; All date codes), because the product may contain pieces of plastic.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Zi Xiu Tang Success, LLC (Trexlertown, PA) recalls Classic Zi Xiu Tang Bee Pollen Capsules (UPC 6937000700019; Lots 04/15/2012, 05/15/2012, 06/15/2012), and Ultimate Formula Capsules (UPC 793573041401; Lots 05/25/2012, 07/29/2012 and 08/05/2012), because the products contain undeclared sibutramine. The recalled products were distributed nationwide to consumers and distributors.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Ameridose recalls all unexpired products remaining in circulation after an on-going FDA inspection of the company’s facility resulted in FDA notifying Ameridose that the agency will be seeking improvement in Ameridose’s sterility testing processes. According to a report from Associated Press, Ameridose was founded by the same pair of individuals who founded NECC, the compounding pharmacy that is linked to the current outbreak of fungal meningitis.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Anderson America, Inc. (Hayward, CA) that a June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Ipswich Shellfish Co. Inc. (Ipswich, MA) that a September 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Palmoqua Distribution recalls Kakao Berlin Brandenburg Dark 75% Chocolate (5kg & 25kg; All codes) and Kakao Berlin Stuttgart Dark 64% Chocolate (5kg & 25kg; All codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed to hotel, restaurant and institutional customers in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Costco Canada (Store #512, Kitchener, ON) recalls Kirkland Signature Stewing Beef (Packed 12/OC/19; UPC starts with 2 21931) and Kirkland Signature Top Sirloin Grilling Steak (Packed 12/OC/19; UPC starts with 2 21853), due to contamination with metal particles. The recalled products were sold only at the Costco Canada Warehouse store (#512) in Kitchener, Ontario.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Allergy Alert (Israel): רטבים Food Products Ltd. recalls Sweet chili sauce (700g bottle), Pizza Sauce (720g jar) and Spaghetti sauce (720g jar), because the products were accidentally identified on the label as “gluten free,” even though they contain gluten.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): B.-d. Farm Paris Creek Pty Ltd. recalls B.-d. Farm Paris Creek Yoghurt Apricot (White plastic tub with apricot image on front; Use by 14.11.2012), due to E. coli contamination. The recalled product was distributed in South Australia and New South Wales in Foodland, IGA and some health food stores.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: BT McElrath Chocolatier, Inc. recalls Peanut Butter Pave (2 & 5 pieces; UPC 693868102117 and 69386905312; Lot #12031, 12046, 12159, & 12201; Best by 4-30-12, 6-15-12, 10-7-12, and 11-26-12), because the product contains peanut butter from Sunland Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was manufactured between January 30, 2012 and June 6, 2012 and distributed nationwide through retail stores, mail order, and direct sales.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The North Carolina Division of Public Health reports having confirmed 106 cases of E. coli O157 among attendees at the Cleveland County Fair. This total – comprising 65 children and 41 adults – includes one fatality (a child from Gaston County, NC) and 13 hospitalizations. Five of the outbreak victims are from South Carolina (2 from York County and 3 from Cherokee County.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Aliments Altra Foods Inc. (Anjou, QC) recalls Crown brand Bitter Chocolate Coated Cranberries (160g; UPC 8 43167 07285 1; Best before 07/07/13), Bitter Chocolate Coated Hazelnuts (160g; UPC 8 43167 07287 5; Best before 07/07/13) and Bitter Chocolate Coated Almonds (160g; UPC 8 43167 07288 2; Best before 07/07/13), because the products may contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were imported from Israel and distributed in Quebec and Ontario. Some distribution may also have occurred in other provinces.
  • Food Safety Recall: Krinos Foods Canada Ltd. (Vaughan, ON) recalls Krinos brand Mini Kashkaval Cheese from Sheeps Milk (470g – 500g pkgs; Product of Bulgaria; Best before 2013 SE 15), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheese was distributed only in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Marché Badre inc. (Montreal, QC) recalls Salaison Anchois, Produit d’Algérie (60g unrefrigerated pkgs; sold up to and including October 3, 2012), because the concentration of histamine in the product exceeds acceptable levels as a result of improper storage at the establishment.

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Australia): Export Corporation (Australia) Pty Ltd., trading as Nutrition Systems, recalls Muscletech Hydroxystim Capsules (3-capsule sample pack, with Batch #0102J1, 18-capsule pack with Batch #0209K1, 110-capsule pack with Batch #0210K1, 200-capsule pack with Batch #0211K1), because the product contains the banned chemical 1.3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA).

  • Allergy Alert: Schoep’s Ice Cream Company (Madison, WI) recalls Kays Classic Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (48 oz round; UPC 0-87848-13021; Best if used by 02/28/14), because of a packaging error that has resulted in some packages containing Kays Butter Pecan Ice Cream instead. As a result of this error, some packages contain undeclared pecans. The recalled ice cream was shipped to Food City and Super Dollar stores in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Premium Nutritional Products, Inc. recalls ZuPreem FruitBlend with Natural Fruit Flavors Premium Daily Bird Food for medium/large birds (2 lb, 3.5 lb, 12 lb, 17.5 lb, and 35 lb; Lot code 598405052; Use by 11/30/13 or Best by 11/13) and ZuPreem FruitBlend with Natural Fruit Flavors Premium Daily Bird Food for large birds (2 lb, 3.5 lb, 12 lb, 17.5 lb, and 35 lb; Lot code 598405072; Use by 11/30/13 or Best by 11/13), because the product contains the combination of exceedingly high calcium levels, low phosphorus, and high vitamin D concentration resulting in a significant health risk to the birds. The products were shipped by the company between the dates of 5/21/12 and 8/23/12 for distribution nationwide through pet retailers, veterinary clinics, on line pet supply merchants and to breeders, and zoological parks.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises the public that Crown brand Bitter Chocolate Coated Raisins (160g pkgs; Product of Israel; UPC 8 43167 07286 8; Use by 07/07/13) may contain undeclared milk and has been recalled. The product was distributed in Ontario and Quebec and may also have been sold in other provinces.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ian and Aganetha Driedger recall Pork Kidney, Pork Liver, and Whole Pork Carcass, due to contamination with drug residues. The recalled pork products were sold to consumers in Alberta.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Solhjulet A/S recalls Dried Organic Peppermint (Product of Egypt; 120g plastic tubs; Best before 01.09.2013; Lot 2352) and Dried Organic Peppermint (Product of Egypt; 120g and 150g cans; Best before 01.09.2013; Lot #10352, 10373, 10484, 1216, 1463, 1586 and 2173), due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Korpela Milling Ltd. recalls Flour (250g bags; Batch #2812; Best before 12/07/2013) due to contamination with rye bran.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Thirty-seven individuals in six states have been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium after consuming contaminated raw almonds. Five people were hospitalized. The most recent reported onset date was October 6, 2012.
