United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA advises restaurants and retailers not to serve or sell and consumers not to eat certain raw oysters from Dai One Foods Co., Ltd, Republic of Korea, due to possible sapovirus contamination. The Southern Nevada Health District notified the FDA of two clusters of illnesses from individuals that consumed raw oysters at a restaurant in Las Vegas on 10/28/2022 and 11/5/2022. 

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA reports that the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak has increased in size to 269 cases. The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined. The CDC has not posted any information on distribution of confirmed cases across the country.

Allergy Alert: Weis Markets recalls Weis Quality Sea Salt Caramel Ripple Ice Cream (48 oz; Sell by 11/08/23; UPC 041497-01288) due to undeclared soy and coconut.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Happy Sprout Inc. (Springfield, VA) that the agency’s July 2022 inspection of the company’s sprouting operation revealed serious violations of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption regulation.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Winfrey’s Olde English Fudge, Inc. (Rowley, MA) that the agency’s March-April 2022 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Bonami Baking Company, Inc. (Pittsburg, CA) that the agency’s April 2022 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food regulation.

Canada

Food Safety Recall: Hafner Canada Inc. recalls Sélection du Pâtissier brand Lemon and Poppyseed Poundcake (1.55 kg; Lot 2257; UPC 6 22267 04509 1) due to foreign matter contamination (pieces of plastic). The recalled product was sold in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Singapore): The Ministry of Health and the Singapore Food Agency are investigating two incidents of gastroenteritis affecting a total of 284 persons who reported gastroenteritis symptoms after consuming food prepared by Rasel Catering Singapore Pte Ltd between 8 and 16 November 2022. The company’s have been suspended until further notice.

United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC reports sixteen cases of Listeria monocytogenes in six states. One person has died and thirteen have been hospitalized. The outbreak has been linked to deli meat and cheese purchased at deli counters in multiple states. CDC advises people at higher risk of severe Listeria illness to not eat meat or cheese from any deli counter, unless it is reheated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot.

Food Safety Recall: Seven Seas International USA, LLC recalls Giant Private Label Wild Caught Alaskan Sockeye Smoked Salmon (4 oz (113g); Lot R4132; UPC 68826715832) due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Groupe Adonis inc. recalls Soupe champignon / Mushroom soup and Soupe creme brocoli / Cream of broccoli soup (Sold up to 7 November 2022) due to undeclared soy, and recalls Soupe lentille jaune / Yellow lentil soup (Sold up to 7 November 2022) in addition to the previously mentioned soups due to absence of mandatory storage temperature labeling.

Food Safety Recall: Verger Champêtre – gîte & compagnie inc. (Granby, QC) recalls Huile assaisonnée ail roti, fleur d’ail et piment fort / Oil flavoured with roasted garlic, garlic flower and hot pepper (Sold up to 4 November 2022) because the product might be unsafe to consume.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut has identified fish cakes (fish meatballs) from Jeka Fish as the source of an outbreak of seven cases of Listeria monocytogenes since mid-August. Please refer to the recall notice, below.

Allergy Alert (Finland): Cloetta Suomi Oy recalls Malaco Alphabet Choco (280g; Best before dates between 8 March 2023 and 3 August 2023) due to undeclared hazelnuts and almonds.

Allergy Alert (Ireland): Holland & Barrett recalls Ultra Soya Lecithin soft gel capsules, 1200 mg (50, 100 & 250 pack sizes) and Mega Soya Lecithin, 1325 mg (100 capsule pack size) due to undeclared peanuts.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA releases its regular weekly update of foodborne disease investigations in progress.

Allergy Alert: World Variety Produce Inc. recalls Melissa’s Brand Dutch Red Potatoes with Dijon Mustard Sauce (1LB 1.7OZ (502g); UPC 0-45255-15221-0; Use by 08/15/22, 08/20/22, 08/22/22, 08/29/22, 09/02/22, 09/05/22, 09/11/22, 09/18/22, 09/26/22, 10/01/22, 10/09/22) due to undeclared egg.

Infant Formula Safety Recall: Mother’s Touch recalls Mother’s Touch Baby Formula because the product did not conform to the FDA’s infant formula standards. The product is sold at local markets in Kinzers, Loganton, and Gap, PA and was available for purchase directly from Mother’s Touch website. A recall notice will be posted at: Scenic Ridge Foods in Loganton, PA, Hillside Bulk Foods in Gap, PA, and Creekside Foods in Kinzers, PA. The FDA recommends that consumers who have purchased this product discontinue use and throw it away.

Food Safety Recall: GHGA recalls various ready-to-eat vegetable products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were sold to Kroger and distributed to retail stores on 9/11/22.
