Outbreak/Illness Investigations

BELGIUM: AFSCA and Zorg (Flanders) report an outbreak of shiga toxin-producing E. coli illnesses that have affected more than 20 residents and one staff member of six nursing homes in Flanders. Health authorities are investigating the source of the outbreak.

GERMANY: A cluster of 17 cases of shiga toxin-producing E. coli illnesses has been identified in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Six children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The source of the infections has not yet been determined.

USA: Louisiana health officials have reported two recent deaths suspected to be linked to consuming raw oysters contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus. The illnesses occurred after oysters harvested in Louisiana were served at restaurants in both Louisiana and Florida.

United States

Allergy Alert: Hans Kissle recalls Hans Kissle Red Potato Bliss Salad (16 oz; Use by dates 8/20/25 and 9/25/25; UPC 036217673706) due to undeclared wheat.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues public health alert for TRADER JOE’S UNCURED PEPPERONI PIZZA PRODUCT OF ITALY (Lot codes 06/16/25 and 06/21/25; Best by 08/16/26 and 08/21/26; Product of Italy) because the product did not receive the benefit of import reinspection.

Food Safety Recall (Update): Southwind Foods, LLC recalls Frozen Shrimp (distributed between July 17 – August 8, 2025) due to possible Cesium-137 contamination. The recalled products were distributed to retailers, distributors, and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

Food Safety Recall (Update): Country Eggs, LLC recalls LARGE BROWN CAGE FREE SUNSHINE YOLKS eggs due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recall has been updated to include packaged eggs with Sell-by dates of 7/1/25 through 9/18/25.

Food Safety Recall: California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) orders recall and state-wide quarantine of Raw Goat Milk Cheddar Cheese (6 oz blocks; Lot code 90423255; Sell by 5/29/26) due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled cheese was produced and packaged by Sierra Nevada Cheese Company.

Food Safety Recall: AquaStar (USA) Corp recalls Cocktail Shrimp (6 oz; Lot codes 10662 5106, 10662 5107, 10662 5124, and 10662 5125; Product of Indonesia) due to possible Cesium-137 contamination. The recalled product was sold only in Walmart stores in AK, AL, AR, CO, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, ND, NE, OH, OK, OR, SD, TN, TX, WA, and WI between July 31, 2025 and August 16, 2025.

Food Safety Recall: AquaStar (USA) Corp recalls Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp (2-lb bags; Lot codes 10662 5139 and 10662 5140; Best before 11/19/2027 and 11/20/2027, respectively; Product of Indonesia) due to possible Cesium-137 contamination. The recalled product was sold at Baker’s, Gerbes, Jay C, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, and Pick ‘n Save in AL, AR, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MO, MS, NE, OH, SC, TN, VA, WI, WV between July 24, 2025 and August 11, 2025.

Food Safety Recall: H & N Group Inc. recalls Frozen shrimp in bulk packaging (Multiple lot codes) due to possible Cesium-137 contamination.

Food Safety Recall: NEW ACAI AMAZONAS LLC recalls Organic Mango Freeze Dried Powder, Bulk (15-kg boxes; Lot L10132851442505; Expiration date 13-07-2027) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Le Grand Goût (Montréal, QC) recalls Marinade (All lots) due to undeclared wheat, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, and sesame.

Food Safety Recall: Iconoglace 2 inc (Montréal, QC) recalls pistachio ice creams (500 ml; Sold up to 25 August 2025) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Cage-free eggs blamed for latest Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak

Brown, cage-free eggs from Country Eggs, LLC (Lucerne Valley, California) have been linked to 95 confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses in 14 states, according to information released today (August 28, 2025) by the CDC.

Eighteen people have been hospitalized.

Outbreak cases have been reported in Arizona (1), California (73), Florida (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Iowa (1), Minnesota (4), North Carolina (2), Nebraska (1), Nevada (3), New York (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Washington (3).

Patient interviews conducted by the CDC and its local partners identified eggs and egg-containing dishes as the most likely source of the illnesses. Traceback investigations conducted by the FDA identified Country Eggs, LLC as a common supplier of the eggs.

On August 27, 2025, Country Eggs, LLC announced a recall of LARGE BROWN CAGE FREE SUNSHINE YOLKS sold under the following brand names and package formats

Nagatoshi:- Sell by dates 7/1/25 through 9/16/25; No. CA 7695
Misuho:- Sell by dates 7/1/25 through 9/16/25; No. CA 7695
Nijiya Markets:- Sell by dates 7/1/25 through 9/16/25; No. CA 7695
Country Eggs LARGE BROWN SUNSHINE YOLKS:– Packed 1/15 DZ Bulk for Foodservice; Sell by 7/1/25 – 9/16/25

The recalled eggs were distributed in California and Nevada to grocery stores and foodservice distributors.

Investigation timeline

The first outbreak case was reported in January 2025. By mid-April, more than 30 outbreak cases had been identified.

The FDA initiated a traceback investigation on April 23, 2025, but was unable to trace a likely source of the outbreak and ended the investigation.

Between mid-June and mid-July, the CDC received reports of spike in the occurrence of illnesses caused by the same outbreak strain. The reports included reports of illnesses experienced by customers of four restaurants.

With this new information, the FDA reopened its traceback investigation and determined that Country Eggs was a common supplier of the eggs consumed by outbreak victims.

Country Eggs inspection history

Country Eggs, LLC has been inspected only once by the FDA, according to information posted on the FDA Inspection Data Dashboard.

This inspection took place in November 2016 and the company’s operation was graded as “Voluntary Action Indicated.”

The inspector found two significant items that required correction:

The company’s written Salmonella Enteritidis prevention plan lacks appropriate Salmonella Enteritidis prevention measures; and
The company prepared, packed, or held shell eggs under insanitary conditions.

Based on information available on the FDA website, there is no evidence that a follow-up inspection ever took place.

What the public needs to know (per CDC)

Do not eat any recalled eggs. Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled eggs using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
Call your healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
- Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up
Businesses should not sell or serve recalled eggs
Businesses should wash and sanitize items and surfaces that may have come in contact with recalled eggs.

Outbreak/Illness Investigations

SPAIN: A large Salmonella outbreak at a hotel in La Manga del Mar Menor (Murcia) has sickened 146 people, with 21 requiring hospitalization (13 adults and 8 children). Authorities have suspended the hotel’s kitchen.

USA: FDA is investigating a new outbreak of 31 Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses linked to an as-yet-unidentified food. Also, the agency has reopened a previous unsuccessful investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis that has since increased to 95 cases (see also Country Eggs, LLC recall notice, below).

United States

Allergy Alert: Taylor Fresh Foods recalls Taylor Farms Honey Balsamic Salad Kit (6/8.3oz; Code dates starting with TFRS; Best if used by up to and including September 4, 2025) due to undeclared sesame and soy.

Food Safety Recall: Country Eggs, LLC recalls Country Eggs LARGE BROWN SUNSHINE YOLKS (Sell by dates 7/1/25 through 9/16/25) due to possible Salmonella contamination. Recalled product was delivered to grocery stores and food service distributors.
