The background

This is the second Salmonella-related recall in less than a year involving a Sunshine Mills product.

In August 2020, the company recalled multiple production lots of Nature’s Menu® Super Premium Dog Food with a Blend of Real Chicken & Quail after the Georgia Department of Agriculture reported finding Salmonella in a sample collected and tested under a routine surveillance program.

In September and October 2020, the company recalled multiple brands of pet food products after high levels of aflatoxin were reported in some of the products.

Earlier in the same year, in March 2020, Sunshine recalled several brands of dry dog food due to elevated levels of vitamin D.

What consumers should know

  • Pets can become infected with Salmonella as a result of eating a contaminated pet food, and display symptoms that may include lethargy, decreased appetite, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
  • Not all infected pets will display symptoms; however, an infected pet may shed Salmonella in its stool, even if asymptomatic.
  • People can become infected as a result of handling a contaminated food or an infected pet. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
  • If you or a household member exhibits symptoms of Salmonella infection, contact your healthcare provider.
  • If your pet has consumed one of the recalled products and exhibits symptoms of Salmonella infection, consult your veterinarian.
  • FDA encourages consumers to report incidents of pet illness involving commercial pet foods. Instructions on how to report these incidents are available on the FDA website at How to Report a Pet Food Complaint.
