OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is investigating a cluster of twelve Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses. The victims reported consuming alfalfa sprouts between December 4–15, either at local restaurants or in their homes after purchasing from local grocery stores.

Canada

Allergy Alert: CFIA announces recall of Olivia & Leo Gourmet Treats brand Dark 55% Cacao Almond Bark (120g; Lot #2257; Best before 14 MA 2023; UPC 6 28634 07609 5) due to undeclared milk.

Allergy Alerty: The Chocolate Lab Inc. recalls The Chocolate Lab brand Chocolate Coffee Beans (100g; Batch code 23 MR 22; UPC 7 03355 52587 6) due to undeclared milk.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC declares the E. coli O121:H19 outbreak over. Final tally is 24 confirmed illnesses in 6 states. Five people were hospitalized. The source of the outbreak was Frozen Earth Grown Vegan Traditional Falafel and Garlic & Herb Falafel, sold in Aldi stores.

Food Safety Recall: Station Rustique (Laurier-Station, QC) recalls FÈVES AU LARD / Baked beans (500 ml & 1 L; Sold up to November 30, 2022) due to potential food safety hazard.

Europe

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (MULTIPLE COUNTRIES): ECDC is investigating a nine-country outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka ST413 infections. Outbreak illnesses have been reported by Czechia (Czech Republic), Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. One person has died, and nineteen have been hospitalized out of the total of 196 confirmed and probable cases reported so far. The outbreak is thought to be linked to consumption of ready-to-eat chicken products, but a specific source has not yet been identified.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA advises restaurants and retailers not to serve or sell and consumers not to eat certain raw oysters from Dai One Foods Co., Ltd, Republic of Korea, due to possible sapovirus contamination. The Southern Nevada Health District notified the FDA of two clusters of illnesses from individuals that consumed raw oysters at a restaurant in Las Vegas on 10/28/2022 and 11/5/2022. 

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA reports that the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak has increased in size to 269 cases. The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined. The CDC has not posted any information on distribution of confirmed cases across the country.

Allergy Alert: Weis Markets recalls Weis Quality Sea Salt Caramel Ripple Ice Cream (48 oz; Sell by 11/08/23; UPC 041497-01288) due to undeclared soy and coconut.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Happy Sprout Inc. (Springfield, VA) that the agency’s July 2022 inspection of the company’s sprouting operation revealed serious violations of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption regulation.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Winfrey’s Olde English Fudge, Inc. (Rowley, MA) that the agency’s March-April 2022 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns The Bonami Baking Company, Inc. (Pittsburg, CA) that the agency’s April 2022 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food regulation.

Canada

Food Safety Recall: Hafner Canada Inc. recalls Sélection du Pâtissier brand Lemon and Poppyseed Poundcake (1.55 kg; Lot 2257; UPC 6 22267 04509 1) due to foreign matter contamination (pieces of plastic). The recalled product was sold in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Singapore): The Ministry of Health and the Singapore Food Agency are investigating two incidents of gastroenteritis affecting a total of 284 persons who reported gastroenteritis symptoms after consuming food prepared by Rasel Catering Singapore Pte Ltd between 8 and 16 November 2022. The company’s have been suspended until further notice.
