United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The FDA and CDC have completed their investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg illnesses associated with consumption of Jif Peanut Butter products manufactured by The J.M. Smucker Company. The FDA is preparing a report  to discuss findings and provide information to assist in future prevention efforts. The outbreak caused 21 illnesses (including 4 hospitalizations) in 17 states.

Allergy Alert: Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. recalls Marutomo Dashi Soup Base (17.6 oz pkgs; Distributed between July 1, 2021 and July 22, 2022; UPC 074410374020) due to undeclared wheat and soy.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Vicentina Fine Italian Foods recalls Vicentina Fine Italian Foods brand Meat Lasagna (All units sold up to and including July 22, 2022) due to undeclared cashew.

Food Safety Recall: Nita Tout Garni (Montréal, QC) recalls Brandade de morue / Brandade of cod (Sold up to 22 July 2022) due to possible food safety hazard.

Food Safety Recall: L’entreprise liquidation Beauharnois (Beauharnois, QC) recalls Saumon fumé / Smoked salmon (Sold up to 26 July 2022) due to inadequate labeling (lack of correct storage temperature information on product package).

Europe

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut is working together with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Norwegian Food Institute to identify the source of a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that has infected 16 individuals in four regions of the country since the end of March 2022.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (France): An unspecified number of cases of pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in PACA et OCCITANIE have been linked to consumption of products from la ferme de l’Aupillon. See recall notice below.

Allergy Alert (Belgium): Dierendonck Butchery recalls Dierendonck brand Boudin Carcasse / Carcass pudding (+300g; Use by 28/07/2022) due to undeclared milk, eggs, celery, mustard, and soy.

Products from this farm have been linked to an outbreak of pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrom in two regions of France.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC reports 16 confirmed cases of Salmonella Senftenberg in 12 US states. The illnesses are linked to consumption of Jif peanut butter products.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues Public Health Alert for Super Asian Chicken Salad (ready-to-eat) (14.5-oz clamshell containers; Best Thru 05/16 through 06/03; distributed to an Amazon Go retail location in Washington) because the salads contain peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Food Safety Recall (Update): Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. recalls approximately 185,610 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) bacon topping products due to possible foreign matter contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Canada

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A virus infections linked to imported fresh organic strawberries. Ten lab-confirmed outbreak cases have been reported in Alberta (4) and Saskatchewan (6). Four people have been hospitalized. The imported fresh organic strawberries were purchased between March 5 and 9, 2022 at Co-op stores in Alberta and Saskatchewan and are no longer available for purchase in Canada.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: FDA has initiated on-site inspection and sample collection in its investigation of the Salmonella Senftenberg outbreak associated with Jif peanut butter products.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Sunny Creek Farm, Inc., citing “… serious violations of the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption regulation” in reference to the company’s sprout growing operation.

Allergy Alert: Casper’s Ice Cream recalls Red Button Vintage Creamery Canadian Vanilla Ice Cream (56-oz tubs; Lot 344-21-946; Expiration date 12/10/24; UPC 077865010017) due to undeclared almonds.

Food Safety Recall: Brookshire Grocery Company recalls bulk Yellow Flesh Peaches (available in stores between 4/15/22 and 5/17/22; Product of Chile) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The products were sold at Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market, and FRESH by Brookshire’s retail stores in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
