OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA reports an increase in confirmed outbreak cases of Salmonella Newport illnesses from 8 to 10. Investigation into the source of the illnesses is ongoing.

Allergy Alert: David’s Cookies recalls Marketside Chocolate Chip Explosion Cake” (7-oz pkg; Lot BS23212) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Alert (New York State): New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns consumers that unpasteurized raw milk from Sunset View Creamer LLC may be contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni and should not be consumed. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of the pathogen.

Food Safety Recall (Georgia): Rock House Creamery recalls Rock House Creamery whole milk (Best buy dates 9/10/2023, 9/17/2023, 9/20/2023, 9/24/2023, and 10/01/2023) and Rock House Creamery buttermilk (Best buy date 10/02/2023) due to incomplete pasteurization records. The problem was discovered during a routine inspection conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Food Safety Recall: Kraft Heinz recalls Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product, individually wrapped (multiple package formats and Best when used by dates) due to defective packaging, making it possible that a thin strip of the individual film may remain on the slice after the wrapper has been removed.

Food Safety Recall: Safeway Fresh Foods recalls processed Butternut squash (Date code 09/19/2023; Product of USA) due to E. coli O45 contamination.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Minnesota): The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating a cluster of five cases of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses among children in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area. The children range in age from 3 months to 10 years. One has been hospitalized. The families of two of the victims reported that they had consumed raw (unpasteurized) milk. The source of the raw milk has not yet been identified. One of the five children was found to be infected with two different types of pathogenic E. coli in addition to the Salmonella outbreak strain.

Food Safety Alert (Multiple countries): Following a case of haemolytic syndrome (HUS) which occurred in a toddler residing in Trentino, Italy, the local health authorities promptly activated the control procedures to verify the cause of the infection. It is probable that originally it is a correlation with the consumption of foods, in particular cheeses produced in a malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo. To protect public health, it is considered appropriate that who have purchased, before 14 July, dairy products attributable to the malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo not to consume such foods. Warnings have been issued to tourists from multiple countries who may have visited the farm-restaurant and purchased one or more of the dairy products.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: Joint investigation by CDC and FDA links Gold Medal flour to 12-state Salmonella Infantis outbreak. To date, the CDC is aware of 13 confirmed cases, including three victims who have been hospitalized. General Mills has initiated a recall of the implicated flour.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: Raw milk was the likely source of two cases of shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections in Tennessee infants in July/August 2022. One of the two infants developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. Both households received raw milk from from participants in the same cow-share.
