United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC, FDA and state and local partners are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Sundsvall illnesses linked to recently recalled Malichita brand cantaloupes imported from Mexico. Forty-three individuals in 15 states are known to have been infected so far. Seventeen outbreak victims were hospitalized.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA, CDC and state and local partners are continuing to investigate reports of elevated blood lead levels in individuals with reported exposure to Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches manufactured in Ecuador and sold under WanaBana, Weis, and Schnucks brands. As of November 16, 2023, there have been 34 reports of illness potentially linked to recalled product submitted to FDA. The FDA suspects cinnamon to be the source of the extremely high lead levels in the fruit puree, but has not yet been able to collect and test samples of the cinnamon used in the recalled products.

Allergy Alert: Raw SeaFoods, Inc. recalls Farm Raised Lightly Seasoned Atlantic Salmon Burger (PLU code 56228; Sell by 9/11/23-11/19/23) due to undeclared sesame and milk.

Allergy Alert: FSIS issues public health alert for five meat and poultry jerky products due to undeclared soy. Please refer to the FSIS notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall Update: SOFIA PRODUCE, LLC (dba Trufresh) expands an earlier recall to include all sizes of fresh cantaloupes packaged in cardboard containers labeled with the “Malichita” brand name (distributed between October 16, 2023 and October 23, 2023; Sales order numbers 128663, 128712, 128713, 128662, 128680, 225252, 225231, 419719, 419721, 419828, 419803, 612235, 612273) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Pet Food Safety Recall Update: TFP Nutrition expands its earlier limited recall of dry dog food to include all dry dog, dry cat, and catfish formulas manufactured in their Nacogdoches, Texas, facility between August 21, 2023, and November 12, 2023, due to possible Salmonella contamination.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: FDA reports an increase in confirmed outbreak cases of Salmonella Newport illnesses from 8 to 10. Investigation into the source of the illnesses is ongoing.

Allergy Alert: David’s Cookies recalls Marketside Chocolate Chip Explosion Cake” (7-oz pkg; Lot BS23212) due to undeclared peanuts.

Food Safety Alert (New York State): New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets warns consumers that unpasteurized raw milk from Sunset View Creamer LLC may be contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni and should not be consumed. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of the pathogen.

Food Safety Recall (Georgia): Rock House Creamery recalls Rock House Creamery whole milk (Best buy dates 9/10/2023, 9/17/2023, 9/20/2023, 9/24/2023, and 10/01/2023) and Rock House Creamery buttermilk (Best buy date 10/02/2023) due to incomplete pasteurization records. The problem was discovered during a routine inspection conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Minnesota): The Minnesota Department of Health is investigating a cluster of five cases of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses among children in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area. The children range in age from 3 months to 10 years. One has been hospitalized. The families of two of the victims reported that they had consumed raw (unpasteurized) milk. The source of the raw milk has not yet been identified. One of the five children was found to be infected with two different types of pathogenic E. coli in addition to the Salmonella outbreak strain.

Food Safety Alert (Multiple countries): Following a case of haemolytic syndrome (HUS) which occurred in a toddler residing in Trentino, Italy, the local health authorities promptly activated the control procedures to verify the cause of the infection. It is probable that originally it is a correlation with the consumption of foods, in particular cheeses produced in a malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo. To protect public health, it is considered appropriate that who have purchased, before 14 July, dairy products attributable to the malga located in the territory of the ex Comune of Coredo not to consume such foods. Warnings have been issued to tourists from multiple countries who may have visited the farm-restaurant and purchased one or more of the dairy products.
