  • Allergy Alert: Whole Foods Market recalls Cookies-by-the-Pound Wedding Cookies and Cookies-by-the-Pound Almondine Wedding Cookies, because they contain undeclared pecans and almonds, respectively. The recalled cookies were distributed in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee between October 22 and November 15 2012.
  • Allergy Alert: Sara Lee® recalls Sara Lee Butter Streusel Coffee Cake (Best by Oct 16, 2013; UPC 3210002342), due to the presence of undeclared pecans. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Boulder Ice Cream (Boulder, CO) recalls the following ice cream and gelato products that contain peanut ingredients supplied by Sunland Inc., due to potential contamination with Salmonella: Boulder Ice Cream Peanut Butter Cup (16 oz; Best by 08/16-13 or earlier; UPC 65388802142), Sorano Gelato Chocolate Peanut Butter (16 oz; Best by 08-10-13 or earlier; UPC 65388807004), Boulder Homemade Chocolate Peanut Butter Gelato (5 L Pan; Best by 10-03-12 or earlier; UPC 65388850103), Boulder Ice Cream – Peanut Butter Cup (2.5 Gal Tub; Best by 07-24-12 or earlier), Boulder Ice Cream – Elvis (2.5 Gal Tub; Best by 07-24-12 or earlier), and Yoki Bliss – Peanut Butter (4 x 1 Gal; Mfg Date 09-24-12 or earlier; UPC 65388806112).
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Carolina Prime Pet Inc. recalls Priority Total Pet Care All Natural Bullstrips (5-ct pkg; UPC 0-21130-42080-3; Lot codes 200827 12 S 3195 and 20090312 S3195), after the Colorado Department of Agriculture finds Salmonella in the product. The recalled Bullstrips were sold in Safeway stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington DC and Wyoming as well as Vons, Pavilions and Pak ‘N Save stores in California; Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas; Genuardi’s stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and Dominick’s stores in Illinois.
  • Outbreak Alert (Final Update): CDC reports that the multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that sickened 22 persons in 13 states and the District of Colubmia appears to be over. Twenty people were hospitalized, and four of the outbreak victims died. Two of the deaths were related to the outbreak illness. The outbreak was traced to contaminated imported Frescolina Marte brand Ricotta Salata Cheese, which was manufactured by Chiarappa S.R.L. (Conversano, Italy).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Denmark): Tamaco Food A/S recalls imported Lactose-free Emmentaler (220g; Best before 12/12/2012, 20/12/2012 and 03/01/2013), because the product contains more than 0.01g of lactose per 100 grams of cheese.
  • Food Safety Alert (UK): The Food Standards Agency warns consumers not to eat peanut butter and peanut based products manufactured by Sunland, Inc. and imported from the USA, because of possible Salmonella contamination. Consumers should discard the affected products, which may have been purchased on the internet or from specialist shops that sell imported American food products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Nestlé Finland recalls Puffet IC Vanilla (110 ml; Best before 05.04.2014; Batch code 2286401812), because some pieces may contain metal fragments.

  • Allergy Alert: Tri-Union Seafoods LLC recalls Chicken of the Sea White Albacore Tuna in Water (7-oz cans in multipack; UPC 0 48000 00097 2; Best by 10/01/16 through 11/09/16), because the product contains undeclared soy. The recalled product was distributed in October and November 2012 to Costco stores in California, Arizona, Washington, Utah, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Nevada.
  • Food Safety Recall: Tony’s Imports and Exports (Clovis, CA) warns consumers, food distributors and food processors not to consume or purchase certain containers of AL-RABIH Tahineh, 100% Sesame (40lb pails; Product of Lebanon; Best before February 2014), after 141 pails of the product were stolen from the company’s warehouse where it was awaiting destruction due to Salmonella contamination.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Magnolia Bird Farm, Incorporated (Anaheim, CA) recalls Sunland Peanuts in Shell, Hulled Peanuts, Magnolia Bird Farm Conure Mix Seed Mix, Magnolia Bird Farm Large Hookbill Seed Mix, Magnolia Bird Farm Hookbill Supreme Seed Mix, and Magnolia Bird Farm Parrot Mix Seed Mix (Distributed October 12, 2011 to October 12, 2012), because the peanuts, which were supplied by Sunland, Inc., may be contaminated with Salmonella.   • Consumer Product Safety Recall: Focus Products Group International, LLC (Lincolnshire, IL) recalls West Bend brand Cocoa Latte™ Hot Drink Maker (Model 65032) and Back to Basics Cocoa Latte™ Hot Drink Maker (Models CM300BK, CM300BKL, CM300BLSS, CM300BR, CM300BRBRL CM300BRL, CM300W), because a small bushing inside the container has to potential to leach lead. The recalled products were shipped nationwide starting in 2004 through October 12, 2012 and sold primarily in the USA through various retailers and e-retailers and through the Focus Products’ online store.

  • Allergy Alert: David Roberts Food Corporation recalls David Roberts Two for the Road Madeira Mix (80g; All codes; UPC 0 67261 14321 1), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was sold nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Shah Brothers Imports recalls Shabros Sesame Laddoo (200g; No codes; UPC 0 59011 01061 4), due to the presence of unspecified extraneous material in the product.

  • Allergy Alert: The Kroger Co. recalls Kroger Deluxe French Vanilla Ice Cream (48 fl oz cartons; Sell by June 12, 2013; UPC 11110 50718), because the product may contain undeclared pecans. The recalled ice cream was sold at Dillons, Gerbes, Bakers, Fry’s, King Soopers, City Market and Smith’s stores in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
  • Food Safety Recall: Omya Inc. recalls Omya-Cal FG-10 AZ (50 lb bags bearing Lot #Z227510511, and 2500-lb & 2000-lb bulk bags bearing Lot #Z227500511), Omya-Cal FG-4 AZ (50-lb bags; Lot # Z227510409 & Z230310409), and Omya-Cal FG-15 AZ (2500-lb bulk bags bearing Lot # Z228400712 & Z228200712) foodgrade ground limestone products, because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled food grade ground limestone products were manufactured at Omya’s Superior, AZ plant and sold to distributors and/or manufacturers as ingredients for further processing in the USA.
  • Food Safety Alert: The California Department of Public Health warns consumers not to eat the following five preserved plum and/or prune products, after tests reveal the presence of lead in excess of state standards. Dried Plum (Imported from Hong Kong), Sweet and Soure Prune (Imported from Taiwan), Ching Ling Dried Prune (Imported from Taiwan), Preserved Plum (Imported from China), and Dried Red Prune (Imported from Taiwan).

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. recalls Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) Capsules, 75mg 60 US (NDC 0597- 0149-54, lot 201900, Exp January 2015), due to a potential packaging defect that may compromise product integrity and allow moisture to enter the bottle, impairing the quality of the active ingredient. The recalled product was distributed in the USA and Puerto Rico.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns St. James Smokehouse Inc. (Miami, FL) that a May-June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Caito Fisheries, Inc. (Fort Bragg, CA) that an August-September 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns B & H Foods, Inc. (Charlotte, NC) that a May 2012 inspection of the company’s pimento cheese processing facility found serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Hana Gourmet, Inc., dba Beyond Gourmet (Dallas, TX) that a July 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Bay View Packing Co. (Milwaukee, WI) that a September-October 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

  • Food Safety Recall: Canada Bread recalls Dempster’s / Bon Matin Original Tortillas (15-pack, 10″ White SL28; 915 g; Best before 2012 OCT 15 – 2012 NOV 15; Item #272905), because the tortillas may contain metal shavings. The recalled products were sold in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada through various retailers, including Costco Canada, and were supplied to foodservice partners.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall: Avmor Ltd. expands its earlier recall of products to include four additional lots of X3 Clean Alcohol-Free Foaming Hand Sanitizer (Benzalkonium chloride 0.13%), due to potential bacterial contamination.
