United States

  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for Applegate® Naturals Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets (8-oz cartons), recalled by King’s Delight due to undeclared wheat.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Stallings Head Cheese Co., Inc. recalls Richard’s Hog Head Cheese (10-oz pkg; Est #2257; Use by 2 1 2013 or 3 20 2013; Produced November 1, 2012 and December 19, 2012 respectively), after hog head cheese from this establishment were linked to a recent cluster of six Salmonella Uganda illnesses in Louisiana. Illness onset dates ranged from october 16, 2012 to November 10, 2012; four patients confirmed having eaten this brand of head cheese. Four of nine retail samples from different production dates have tested positive for Salmonella; however, tests to determine whether the outbreak strain of Salmonella Uganda was recovered from the retail samples are not yet complete. The recalled products were shipped to a distribution center for retail distribution in Louisiana and Southeastern Texas, and were sold at Brookshire’s food and pharmacy and Super1Foods & Discount Pharmacy . USDA has not yet released a retail distribution list for this recall.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Jouni Meats, Inc. (Sterling Heights, MI) recalls various size packages of ground beef (Produced between Dec 4, 2012 and Dec 9, 2012), after consumption of ground beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods was linked to an outbreak of  16 Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9) and Wisconsin (3). Illness onset dates ranged from December 9, 2012 to January 7, 2013. Seven of the outbreak victims reported having eaten a raw ground beef dish at the same restaurant before becoming ill. The restaurant had acquired the raw beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods.
  • Food Safety Recall/Outbreak Alert: Gab Halal Foods (Troy, MI) recalls various size packages of ground beef (Produced between Dec 4, 2012 and Dec 9, 2012), after consumption of ground beef from Joumi Meats and Gab Halal Foods was linked to an outbreak of  16 Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses in Arizona (1), Illinois (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (9) and Wisconsin (3). Illness onset dates ranged from December 9, 2012 to January 7, 2013. Seven of the outbreak victims reported having eaten a raw ground beef dish at the same restaurant before becoming ill.   • Food Safety Recall Update: The California Department of Public Health releases a state-wide list of retailers that were supplied with Hunt’s Tomato Sauce (Regular and No Salt Added), recalled by ConAgra Foods due to a defective inner can lining.
  • Personal Care Product Recall: The Procter & Gamble Company recalls Crest 3D White Arctic Fresh Rinse (946 ml; Lot 22155395RF; UPC 37000-84023), due to a cloudy appearance, according to information posted by Haggen Northwest Fresh and TOP Food and Drug.
  • Food Safety Enforcement Action: FDA and Jonlly Fruits, Inc. (Puerto Rico) enter into consent decree of permanent injunction prohibiting distribution of fruit and juice products sold under Jonlly’s own label, as well as “Natural Tropic,” “Selectos,” and several other private-label brands. Under the decree, Jonlly agrees to cease all operations until they comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, including Current Good Manufacturing Practices and the juice HACCP regulations.
  • Pet Treat Safety Withdrawal: The Hartz Mountain Corporation withdraws Hartz® Chicken Chews™ and Hartz® Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken, because the dog treats contain trace amounts of an unapproved antibiotic residue.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: King’s Processing Ltd. recalls a variety of Subs, Wraps and Sandwiches sold under the Savoury Express and Sub Delicious brands, in addition to an unbranded 5-pack Value Sub (various package sizes and Best before dates), due to undeclared mustard. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products. The recalled products were supplied to retailers in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): The Health Store recalls various products sold from The Health Store shops and other health food stores, due to undeclared milk and/or sulphites. Please refer to the Food Allergen Alert for a complete list of affected products and Best before dates.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Hainich Konserven GmbH recalls Hainich Cherry Preserves (370 mL; Best before 17.07.2015), after receiving a consumer complaint regarding glass fragments.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): Migros Zurich recalls Gorgonzola Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.838.220.00), Gorgonzola Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.848.260.00), Gorgonzola Mascarpone Cremoso oro (approx. 250g; Article No. 2125.820.000.00) Gorgonzola Dolce, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.840.065.00) Gorgonzola Piccante, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.839.065), and Gorgonzola Mascarpone, sold at cheese stalls (Article No. 2125.818.025), after Listeria was found in two types of gorgonzola. The recalled cheeses were sold at Migros Zurich: Zurich canton, Glaris canton, and several points of sale in Saint-Gall canton.
  • Contact Lens Safety Recall (Spain): Johnson & Johnson Medical Iberia recalls 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® contact lenses (Lot 2054895620) and ACUVUE® ADVANCE® WITH HYDRACLEAR contact lenses (Lot B00DJPQ), due to the possibility of an incomplete seal, which could compromise the sterility of the contact lenses.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Australia): Three additional cases of listeriosis have been reported in New South Wales among people who consumed soft cheeses recalled by Jindi Cheese Company. The new cases bring the total number of cases to 21, nationwide. A woman in New South Wales miscarried after contracting listeriosis, and two deaths have been reported in other states among those affected by the outbreak.

  • Allergy Alert: ConAgra Foods (Omaha, NE) recalls Andy Capp’s Hot Fries flavor product (0.85-oz blue poly bags; Case UPC 20-0-26200-47169-7; Unit UPC 00-0-26200-47168-6; Batch code 5381232500; Sell by August 17, 2013), because the product may contain undeclared soy due to a packaging error. The recalled product was supplied to retail food distributors in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for distribution to retail stores in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
  • Allergy Alert: Southwest Ice Cream Specialties recalls ShurFine “Creamery Select” Dulce de Leche Premium Ice Cream (1.75-qt/1.66L “scround” container; UPC 015400224840; Best by Nov 8, 2014; Plant code 48-3202-F). Due to a packaging error, the cartons contain undeclared wheat, soy, and pecans as a result of the Dulce de Leche cartons having been filled with ShurFine Praline Pecan ice cream.
  • Allergy Alert: Woodstock® (Providence, RI) recalls Woodstock All Natural Tamari Almonds (7.5 oz; Best by 10/24/13; Lot 12298), because the product contains undeclared soy due to mislabeling. The recalled product was supplied to retailers in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and District of Columbia.
  • Allergy Alert: Somersault Snack Co., LLC (Sausalito, CA) recalls Somersaults Cinnamon Crunch products (All package sizes; All Sell-by dates of 8/30/2013 or earlier), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed to retailers nationwide.
  • Allergy Alert: Island Delights, Inc. (Seville, OH) recalls Maple Coconut Haystacks (various sizes; Lot 13410400.02, 13410400.04, 13410400.08 and 13410402.00) Chocolate/Almond Coconut Haystacks (various sizes; Lot 13413100.02, 13413100.04, 13413100.08 and 13413102.00), Coffee Coconut Haystacks (various sizes; Lot 13411300.02, 13411300.04, and 13411300.08) and Almond Coconut Haystacks (various sizes; Lot 13413000.02, 13413000.04, 13413000.08 and 13413002.00), because the products contain undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed to retail stores and through mail orders in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Delifish expands its earlier recall to include the following cold smoked products relating to Julian dates 235 to 345, because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenesFood Service Cold Smoked Salmon Trim (1 lb.), Royal Fjord Smoked Toppers, (6-oz; UPC 810230000561), Royal Fjord Sliced Smoked Salmon Loin (12-14 oz), Cold smoked pieces (5 lb), Royal Fjord (5 oz. rounds; UPC 810230000127), New England Smoked Salmon (4 oz.; UPC 810230000066), Pacific Supreme (3-oz; UPC # 058138102448), Sam’s (20-oz; UPC# 073030805167), Icy Point (2 – 3-lb; NO UPC), Lassco Select Gourmet (8-oz; UPC # 072840017081), Bacon Lassco (3-oz; UPC #072840017036), Natural Trimming (5-lb; NO UPC), Trimming with preservatives (4-lb; NO UPC), Party Platter (6-oz; NO UPC), Nova Wheel (16-oz; UPC # 072840007273), Nova Lassco (4-oz; UPC #072840017050), Nathans (8-oz; UPC # 073030803699), Nathans (3-oz; UPC # 073030803682), and 3 Star (4-oz; UPC # 072840017517).   • Food Safety Recall: GIANT Food Stores, LLC and MARTIN’S Food Markets alert their customers to the recall by Ocean Beauty Seafoods LLC of all Sell-By dates of the following products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenesNathan’s Nova Salmon (3 o.z.; UPC 7303080368), Nathan’s Nova Salmon (8 o.z.; UPC 7303080369), and Lassco Smoked Salmon (3 o.z.; UPC 7284001703).
  • Food Safety Recall: Sister Sara’s (Pleasanton, CA) recalls Sister Sara’s Good For You Soup (1-qt/32-oz glass jar), Sister Sara’s Bread and Butter Pickles (1-pt/16-oz glass jar), Sister Sara’s Pickled Beets (1-pt/16-oz glass jar) and Sister Sara’s Old Fashioned Dill Pickles (half-gallon/64-oz glass jar), due to possible Clostridium botulinum contamination as a result of having possibly been improperly produced. The recalled products were sold at the Pleasanton Farmers Market (Pleasanton, CA) and the Livermore Certified Farmers Market (Livermore, CA).
  • Pet Treat Safety Recall: Publix Super Markets recalls Publix Chicken Tenders Dog Chew Treats (3,5-oz bag; UPC 41415-18527), because the product may contain trace amounts of antibiotic residue. The recalled product was sold in Publix grocery stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
  • Pet Treat Safety Recall: Milo’s Kitchen® recalls Chicken Jerky Home-Style Dog Treats and Chicken Grillers Home-Style Dog Treats, after trace amounts of residual antibiotics were detected by the New York State Department of Agriculture in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky. Both of the recalled products are sourced from the same chicken suppliers.
  • Pet Treat Safety Withdrawal: Nestlé Purina PetCare Company and its wholly owned subsidiary Waggin’ Train LLC withdraw Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats sold nationwide in the United States until further notice. The action was taken after the New York State Department of Agriculture detected trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of the chicken jerky treats.
  • Pet Treat Safety Recall: Wegmans alerts its customers to the recall by IMS Pet Industries of Cadet Gourmet Chicken Sausage (8 oz; UPC 7-68303-07461), due to test results that showed trace amounts of antibiotic residue in the treats.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: Mobius Therapeutics, LLC (St. Louis, MO) recalls Mitosol® (mitomycin for solution) Kit for Ophthalmic Use (0.2mg/vial; Lot #M098260 and M086920; Expiration Date 08/2013), because one or more parts of the kit may contain be contaminated with a strain of yeast. The recalled products were distributed between 10/22/2012 and 12/14/2012 in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.
  • Outbreak Alert (Missouri): The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reports several cases of diarrhea that may be due to Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli. One person has been confirmed to be infected with E. coli O103. The illnesses were reported in the northwest part of Missouri and may be related to the consumption of locally produced unpasteurized dairy products.
  • Outbreak Alert (Cruise ships): The CDC is investigating outbreaks of gastroenteritis among passengers and crew members of the Emerald Princess (Princess Cruises; voyage dates Dec 17-27, 2012) and Queen Mary 2 (Cunard Line; voyage dates Dec 22, 2012 to Jan 3, 2013). The causative agent has not yet been determined in either case.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that 16 persons from seven states have been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium after coming into contact with pet hedgehogs purchased from multiple breeders in different states. Three people have been hospitalized. The outbreak, which began in December 2011, has affected people in Alabama (1), Indiana (1), Michigan (3), Minnesota (2), Ohio (2), Oregon (1) and Washington (6).

  • Allergy Alert: Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. (Chester, IL) recalls Food Club brand Chocolate Chunk Brownie Mix (12 x 14.25-oz cartons/case; Best by NOV 28 13 D02; UPC 36800-13486), because the product contains undeclared walnuts. The recalled Brownie Mix was distributed to an Abingdon, VA warehouse on December 5, 2012.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert (New Brunswick): The province’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health is investigating five confirmed cases of E. coli O157, including two reported in the Saint John region and three in the Fredericton region. All five victims were seen in hospital emergency rooms; one person was admitted to hospital. It is not yet known whether all five cases have a common source, or whether they may be linked to several recent cases in neighboring Nova Scotia.
  • Outbreak Alert (British Columbia): An outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis prompted the shut-down of an entire floor of Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminister; one ward is expected to reopen today, according to CBC. A ward at Vancouver General Hospital remains “under containment” due to a separate outbreak of norovirus infections.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): The recent recall of Koon Yick Wah Kee brand fermented bean curd products due to contamination with Bacillus cereus has been extended to include all of the following: Tofu in sesame oil (450g glass jar; Best before 30/12/2014, 30/06/2014 and 30/09/2014) and Tofu in sesame oil and peppers (450g glass jar; Best before 30/12/2014, 30/06/2014 and 30/09/2014). The recalled products were sold in Asian specialty stores from August 2012 to December 2012, inclusive.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Fromagerie de Jussac (France) recalls an extensive list of cheeses made from cow’s milk, goat milk and sheep milk (packaging includes 200g and 3 x 60g sizes), due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed product list.
  • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2012.1774): Listeria monocytogenes in various Fromagerie de Jussac cheeses from France; distributed to Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0002): Presence of poisonous mushrooms in dried black morels from the Czech Republic; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0004): Carbendazim in oranges from South Africa; distributed to France.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0007): Salmonella in dried pet food for dogs from India; distributed to Germany and Luxembourg.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2013.0008): Ethephon in cherry tomatoes from Italy; distributed to Germany.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Hang Lung Trading Co. recalls the Chinese herbal medicine known as Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii (Batch #210035; Imported from Mainland), because it was found to be contaminated by solanaceous alkaloids.
  • Food Safety Notification Update (EU #2012.1774): Listeria monocytogenes in various Fromagerie de Jussac cheeses from France; distributed to Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
