  • Allergy Alert: Piller’s Fine Foods (Waterloo, ON) recalls Piller’s brand Pepperoni Sliced (6 x 500g; UPC 0 69401 04605 5; Best before 2012 NO 01, 2012 NO 20, 2012 NO 27, 2012 DE 03, 2012 DE 05, 2012 DE 13), Piller’s brand Sub Pac Classic $5 – Pepperoni, Luncheon Meat, Smoked Ham (400g; UPC 0 69401 03613 1; Best before 2012 OC 18, 2012 NO 19, 2012 NO 20, 2012 NO 27, 2012 DE 05), and Piller’s brand Sub Pac Classic – Pepperoni, Luncheon Meat, Smoked Ham (250g; UPC 0 78727 03605 6; Best before 2012 SE 11, 2012 SE 20, 2012 SE 26, 2012 OC 11, 2012 OC 25, 2012 NO 01, 2012 NO 12, 2012 NO 20, 2012 NO 23, 2012 NO 27, 2012 DE 07), because the products contain wheat that is not declared on the label. The recalled items were distributed in  British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, and may also have been sold in other provinces.
  • Allergy Alert Update/Correction: Rich Products of Canada, Limited (Fort Erie, ON) recalls the following expanded/corrected list of products, which contain undeclared almonds: Dorgel Hazelnut Gelato (1.65L; UPC 069892180733; Lot Nos. 11281, 11294, 11306, 11348, 12055, 12069, 12104, 12118, 12123, 12129, 12158, 12159), Dorgel Bacio Chocolate Gelato (1.65L; UPC 069892180764; Lot Nos. 11286, 11307, 11308, 11329, 11347, 12053, 12061, 12102, 12124, 12132, 12138, 12146, 12154, 12223), Dorgel Bacio Tartufo – 4 pk (125 ml x 4; UPC 069892177368; Lot Nos. 11322, 11347, 12061, 12132, 12188), Dorgel Bacio Tartufo – 30 pk (125 ml x 30; UPC 069892177696; Lot Nos. 11322, 11347, 12061, 12132) and Farmboy® Hazelnut Gelato (700 ml: UPC 808912002026; Best before 2012 11 29 / 2012NO29). The Dorgel products were sold in Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and British Columbia and possibly in other provinces; the Farmboy® Hazelnut Gelato was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises the public that the following items were recalled in response to the recall of peanuts and nut butter products by Sunland, Inc in conjunction with an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney infections in the USA: Sunland Inc. Raw In Shell Peanuts (25 lb bulk; Item #10108; Best by Oct 12, 2012 to Oct 12, 2013; distributed in certain stores in Ontario); PureFit Peanut Butter Crunch Bars (56.7g; UPC 8 12787 00100 8; Best by 1 March 2013 (corrected from 1 March 2012) and 12 July 2013; distributed across Canada) and PureFit Peanut Butter Crunch (Box of 15; UPC 8 12787 00200 5; Best by 1 March 2013 (corrected from 1 March 2012) and 12 July 2013; distributed across Canada).

Europe

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Northern Ireland): The outbreak of E. coli O157 illnesses linked to Flicks restaurant in Cityside Mall, Belfast stands at 44 confirmed and 144 probable cases as of 3pm Friday, October 19th. All of the confirmed outbreak victims were infected with E. coli O157 Phage Type 54. An August 2012 outbreak cluster of four illnesses linked to the same restaurant was caused by E. coli O157 Phage Type 8 and appears to be unrelated to the current outbreak. The Public Health Agency urges anyone who ate at Flicks since September 24th and who is experiencing diarrhea – especially bloody diarrhea – should seek immediate medical attention.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1462): Glass fragments in whole cherry tomato & chilli sauce from Italy; distributed to Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1463): Ochratoxin A in ground nutmeg from Germany, with raw material from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1464): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled rump beef meat from Poland; distributed to Italy and Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1465): Yessotoxin in chilled mussels from Italy; distributed to Italy and Spain.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Gilster-Mary Lee (Chester, IL) recalls Better Valu Fruit Whirls Ready to Eat Cereal (28-oz plastic bags; Best by JUL 17 13 J8; UPC 79801-24630), because the product contains undeclared almonds. The recalled cereal was distributed between July 24, 2012 and October 16, 2012 to retail stores located in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
  • Allergy Alert: The Raymond-Hadley Corp (Spencer, NY) recalls Wegmans Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie mixes (17.2 oz; Enjoy by Oct 30 2014 (2013?) through MAR 17 2014), because the products may contain undeclared milk and pecans. Two adverse reactions have been reported.
  • Food Safety Recall: Copps, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pick’n Save and Rainbow advise their customers that Roundy’s Home Run Smash Ice Cream has been withdrawn due to an unspecified health risk. No other details were provided.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Withdrawal: Energizer Holdings Inc. withdraws several Banana Boat sun care products (see recall notice for details) due to a potential risk of product igniting on the skin if contact is made with a source of ignition before the product is completely dry.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: As of today, 106 people – 64 children and 42 adults – are known to have been infected by E. coli after attending the Cleveland County Fair in North Carolina. One child has died. Twelve individuals (including the deceased child) have been or currently are hospitalized. Animal exposure at the fair is thought to be the source of the outbreak.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The New Mexico Department of Health and CDC have confirmed a case of Salmonella Bredeney in a 5-year-old girl from Roosevelt County. The child ate multiple products containing peanut butter. This brings the total number of confirmed cases of Salmonella Bredeney infections to 36 people in 20 states.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that a total of 219 people from 34 states have been infected with outbreak strains of Salmonella Sandiego, Salmonella Pomona and Salmonella Poona as a result of exposure to small pet turtles or their environments. Thirty-six people required hospitalization.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall/Alert: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns the public not to consume, sell or serve Earthbound Farm Baby Spinach Grab & Go Salad Kit with Peanuts (3.5 oz; UPC 0 32601 08875 0; All dates), because the product contains peanuts recalled by Sunland, Inc. in the USA and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The  Salad Kit was sold in certain stores in Ontario and British Columbia and has been recalled by importers and retailers.
  • Food Safety Alert/Withdrawal: CBC News reports that Sobeys has withdrawn whole Atlantic salmon from its Maritimes stores after sea lice were reported in the salmon.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada reports an additional confirmed case of E. coli O157:H7 in the province of Quebec, bringing the total number of confirmed cases relating to consumption of beef products from XL Foods to 16 illnesses in four provinces: Alberta (7), Newfoundland and Labrador (1), Quebec (5) and British Columbia (3).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Morrisons recalls Morrisons Celery, Fruit and Peanut Salad (250g; Use by 27 October 2012), due to the presence of undeclared wheat and gluten.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls Asda Free From 5 Caramel Wafers (Best before 24 December 2012, 14 January 2013, 21 January 2013) and Asda Free From 5 Chocolate Wafers (Best before 3 December 2012, 21 January 2013), because the products may contain gluten at levels higher than those permitted for products labeled ‘gluten-free.’
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Home Farm Speciality Foods withdraws various Home Farm Foods brand savoury sauce products (Best before up to and including August 2013), because of inconsistent allergen information provided on the label with respect to celery, sulphites and wheat. Affected products include: Beef Stock (450g), Black Bean Sauce (212g), Chicken and Rib sauce (395g), Chicken Casserole sauce (470g), Chicken Stock (450g), Diane Sauce (395g), Hoi Sin & Chilli Sauce (212g), Hoi Sin Sauce (212g), Plum Sauce (212g), Red Wine Casserole Sauce (470g), Rich Beef Casserole Sauce (470g), Roast Beef Gravy (450g), Roast Chicken Gravy (450g), and Sausage Casserole Sauce (470g).
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): S.p.r.l Bella Sicilia recalls Marte Ricotta Marzotica (2kg & 700g; Lot 09/11/2012 & 27/11/2012), and Marte Ricotta Torretta (between 850g and 1000g; Best before 23/11/2012; Lot 231112), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Ardo A/S recalls Danish fine peas, frozen (575g; Best before 04.03.2014), after mouse droppings were found.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Semper Oy Ab recalls Semper gluten-free oatmeal (Best before date 26.09.2013, time 00.00 to 08.30), because the product contains deoxynivalenol (a mycotoxin) in excess of the allowable limit.
  • Food Safety Alert (Germany): The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety warns of adulterated liquor from the Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Alert (Sweden): The National Food Authority has determined that five samples of fake beef contained the dye azorubine E122. There  is no health risk associated with this dye; however, its use is prohibited in both beef and pork. The fraudulent dyed beef was labeled as originating from Hungary or Argentina.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Northern Ireland): As of October 18th, the Public Health Agency has received reports of 29 confirmed cases and 202 probable cases of E. coli O157 infections linked to Flicks restaurant in Cityside Mall, Belfast. None of the confirmed cases are in children; 15 people have been hospitalized since the start of the outbreak, most of whom have been released.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Netherlands): The Netherlands’ RIVM reports 950 Salmonella Thompson illnesses associated with the consumption of smoked salmon recalled by Foppen. Three deaths have been reported.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (China): Approximately 365 students in Yunnan province developed  fever and diarrhea after consuming a school meal last week. One hundred and ten of the students were confirmed to be suffering from infectious diarrhea of an unspecified origin.

  • Allergy Alert: Raymond-Hadley Corp. (Spencer, NY) expands its earlier recall of Wegmans Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix (17.2 oz; UPC 077890283363) to include Enjoy By Dates from 30 Oct 2013 – 17 Mar 2013, because the product contains undeclared milk.The recalled Brownie Mix was distributed through Wegmans retail stores in the USA.
  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA updates its retail distribution list for Chicken Wyngz products recalled by Tyson Foods, Inc. due to the presence of undeclared allergens.
  • Food Safety Recall: Natural Selection Foods recalls Earthbound Farm Baby Spinach Grab & Go Salad Kits with Peanuts (3.5 oz clamshell; UPC 0-32601-08875-0; All Use By dates), because the product contains peanuts chopped by Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed to retail supermarkets and foodservice operators in California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Buck’s Ice Cream (Milford, CT) recalls Iskream Brand Peanut Butter and Jelly No Sugar Added Ice Cream (8 pts/case; UPC 858452020554; All lot codes) because the product contains peanut butter from Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed to retail customers through several wholesale distributors in the Northeast between March 1, 2012 and October 17, 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Trifecta Foods, LLC recalls Fresh Pak brand and Energy Club brand In-Shell Roasted Salted and Unsalted Peanuts, because these peanuts were supplied by Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed nationally to independent stores, grocery and retail chains during the six month period immediately prior to the October 12, 2012 recall date.   • Pet Food Safety Recall: TBD Brands, LLC recalls Yoghund brand Organic Banana & Peanut Butter flavor, frozen yogurt dog treats (All case product of Lot Code 268 12 and earlier, cup and four pack Best By Date of 9.24.14 or earlier), because the product contains peanut butter from Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The product was distributed through retailers nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: USDA releases a retail distribution list for beef and pork products recalled by Lao Chareune Foods due to the lack of federal inspection.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reports that 52 children and 29 adults have been infected with E. coli after attending the Cleveland County Fair. One child has died.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Over The Hill Orchards recalls Over The Hill Orchards brand Prairie Cherry Bark (100g; UPC 8 32398 00016 0) and Prairie Cherry Delights (144g; UPC 8 32398 00005 4), due to the presence of undeclared soy. The recalled products were sold in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Natural Selection Foods recalls Earthbound Farm Baby Spinach Grab & Go Salad Kits with Peanuts (3.5 oz clamshell; UPC 0-32601-08875-0; All Use By dates), because the product contains peanuts chopped by Sunland and may be contaminated with Salmonella.   • Food Safety Advisory: Health Canada updates its previous advice to parents and caregivers, urging them to consult their health professional before using Simply Thick to feed infants. Simply Thick is a xanthan gum-based product marketed for the management of swallowing disorders. There may be a link between consumption of Simply Thick and the development of a potentially life-threatening condition known as necrotizing enterocolitis.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): AP Green / Fresh Choice recalls Frisee lettuce heads (Whole heads; Lot No. 278, 282, 285; Packed 4/10-2012, 8/10-2012 and 11/10-2012, respectively), after Campylobacter was detected in a sample of lettuce from the batch used in these lot numbers.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Bornholm Andelsmejeri recalls Habits Pear/Banana Lactose-free Yogurt (1L cartons; Best before 20/10/2012 (October 20); 22-10-2012 (Oct. 22) and 24-10-2012 (Oct. 24)), due to yeast growth, causing gas formation in the the cartons of product.
  • Food Safety Recall (UK): The Co-operative recalls The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Whole Cherry Tomato and Chilli Pasta Sauce (340g; Product code LM111), because some jars may contain pieces of glass due to a manufacturing  fault.
  • Outbreak Alert (France): France reports two fatal cases of food poisoning linked to the consumption of toxic mushrooms in the Loire.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1451): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled scabbardfish from Italy; distributed to Italy and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1453): Methidathion in oranges from Brazil; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1455): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled turkey breast fillets from Poland; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1456): Prochloraz in mango from Guinea; distributed to the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1457): Arsenic in dried hijiki algae from Japan; distributed to Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1459): Aflatoxins in ogi from Nigeria; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1460): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled monkfish from Denmark; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1461): Salmonella in frozen beef fat from Lithuania; distributed to Italy.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Pure Health (Hong Kong) Medical Limited recalls Pure Health Stong Plaster, Bon Sante Jiangubao Yitiaogen Huoluotie, and Tranaly Plaster, because these proprietary Chinese medicines, which were manufactured in Taiwan and repackaged by Pure Health, were not registered in Hong Kong.
  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Peking Medicine Manufactory recalls Yan Chai Tong] Reishi Bak Foong Pills (Registration #HKP-02931; Batch AL0107), because the product contains three times the permitted level of mercury.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or use the oral product Jia Rong Zhuang Gu Tong Bi Jiaonang, as it may contain multiple undeclared Western drugs that are dangerous to health.
