International recall of Ferrero’s Kinder chocolate products

Ferrero has expanded its international recall of Kinder Surprise chocolate novelty products, linked to a multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium illnesses. Click on the country link to navigate to the most recent recall notice for that jurisdiction.

United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATES: FDA is investigating a new outbreak of 15 cases of Listeria monocytogenes that have not yet been linked to any food product. In addition, the number of Adverse Events in a separate investigation has grown to 38, and the agency is in the process of collecting and analyzing samples.

Allergy Alert: Snak King recalls O Organics Sea Salt Organic Popcorn (5 oz; Best if used by 9/24/2022 and 9/25/2022; UPC 079893 403038) due to undeclared milk.

FDA Warning Letter: During a September 2021 inspection of TreeHouse Foods, Inc. (Cambridge, MD) FDA found “…serious deviations from the Emergency Permit Control regulation…and the Thermally Processed Low-Acid Foods Packaged in Hermetically Sealed Containers regulation“. The company’s response to the FDA’s observations was deemed to be inadequate, resulting in an official Warning Letter.

FDA Warning Letter: During a September/October 2021 inspection of Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. (Denver, CO) initiated as part of a multistate foodborne Salmonella Thompson outbreak investigation, FDA found the presence of the outbreak strain in the production facility in addition to “…serious violations of the Seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation … and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation.” After a review of documentation of corrective actions taken by the firm, the FDA expressed its continued “serious concerns” in an official Warning Letter.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: PHAC reports 328 cases of norovirus and gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of British Columbia oysters as of April 8, 2022. Outbreak cases have been confirmed in British Columbia (293), Alberta (3), Saskatchewan (1), Manitoba (15) and Ontario (16).

Food Safety Recall: Épices Kay inc (Montréal, QC) recalls CHIKTAY (500 ml; Sold up to 6 April 2022) due to absence of mandatory storage temperature labeling.

Europe

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (France): Santé Publique France reports 50 confirmed cases of haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) secondary to shigatoxin-producing E. coli infections linked to consumption of Buitoni Fraîch’Up frozen pizza. Forty-eight of the fifty HUS victims are children, two of whom have died. The two adult HUS patients are both more than 90 years of age. An additional 25 cases are under investigation.

United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: The CDC has received reports of 103 Norovirus illnesses associated with consumption of raw or lightly cooked oysters from the Canadian province of British Columbia. As of today, the agency has confirmed reports of outbreak-related illnesses from thirteen states, including CA, CO, FL, HI, IL, MA, MN, NJ, NV, NY, OR, TX and WA. CDC is working with state and local partners to determine a more accurate number of illnesses in this outbreak and will update this number as more information is gathered.

Food Safety Recall: Our Table Cooperative (Sherwood, Oregon) recalls Frozen Blueberries (2½ pound or 5-pound plastic bags; Packed on 03/12/2022) due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled product was distributed in Oregon between 3/12/22 and 3/29/22.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (UK and EU): EFSA and ECDC are investigating a multi-country outbreak of monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium linked to the consumption of Kinder brand chocolate products manufactured in Belgium by Ferrero. Confirmed cases have been reported by France (20), Germany (4), Ireland (10), Luxembourg (1), Netherlands (2), Norway (1), Sweden (4) and UK (63). An additional 29 probable cases are still under investigation, bringing the total number of cases to 134.
