OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: The FDA is investigating the source of a new outbreak of E. coli O121:H19 illnesses. Thirty-seven outbreak cases have been reported so far, but no food product has yet been linked to the illnesses.

Public Health Alert: The FDA is advising restaurants and food retailers not to sell and to dispose of oysters and consumers not to eat oysters from Fanny Bay Oysters (Product of British Columbia, Canada; Harvested 10/17/2023 from harvest area 14-8 Landfile #278757) due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus contamination. The oysters were shipped to distributors in California and Washington.

Food Safety Recall: Bix Produce Company LLC recalls FreshPoint Bix Produce Company, Cantaloupe (3/bag; Lots P2742702-00 and P2741287) due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Food Safety Recall: Q’Delicia recalls approximately 639 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry empanada products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Norway): Norway’s Public Health Institute continues to investigate an illness outbreak due to a strain of shiga toxin producing E. coli. Twenty-four cases have been confirmed to date, more than half of them in children under the age of thirteen. Nine of the children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The outbreak strain has been found in hamburger meat.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut is investigating an outbreak of six confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections reported from March 27, 2023, onwards. Five of the six patients have been hospitalized, including one who is suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The cases are spread across most of Denmark. The outbreak strain is reported to be sequence type 11 and is positive for Shiga toxin type Stx2a. The possible source of the outbreak strain is still under investigation.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Norway): The Public Health Institute warns that Norway’s outbreak of shiga toxin-producting E. coli infections is not yet over. The outbreak strain has been detected in 20 people so far, eleven of them under 13 years of age. Seven of the children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. The outbreak strain was found in hamburger, which has been recalled together with other minced meat and stuffing products that contain the same raw ingredients.

Allergy Alert (France): FOODEX recalls HANABI brand GYOZA LEGUME POULET / Vegetable and chicken gyoza (600g; Lot 630/C/9; Best before 22/03/2024) due to undeclared egg.

Allergy Alert (Netherlands): Aldi recalls Aldi brand Koolhydraat verlaagd brood half / Reduced carbohydrate bread, half-loaf (Production date 06-10-2023) due to undeclared soy.

Food Safety Recall (Finland): House of Denmark A/S recalls Frugi Muumi omena-mustikka / Apple-blueberry fruit bar (120g; Batch nos. L10931, L18532 & L21322; Best before 19.04.2024, 04.07.2024 & 01.08.2024, respectively) due to elevated ochratoxin levels in one of the batches.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues public health alert for SPAM Classic canned meat (12-oz cans; Lot code A08173; Best by AUG 2026) due to underprocessing. A recall was not requested because it is believed that the product is no longer available for consumers to purchase.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Calgary, Alberta): Albert Health Services reports a total of 348 lab-confirmed cases of E. coli O157 connected to the Calgary-area daycare centre outbreak, including 27 lab-confirmed secondary cases. Nine patients remain hospitalized, all suffering from haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Three of the hospitalized patients remain on dialysis. A total of 642 children have been cleared to return to a daycare facility. Due to the secondary cases, seven daycare facilities are under closure and partial closure orders issued September 15 and 16.
