United States

  • Allergy Alert: Unilever recalls Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Nougat Crunch Ice Cream: Sweet Cream Ice Cream with Fudge Covered Wafer Cookies & a Chocolate Nougat Swirl (1-pt containers; UPC 7684020899; Date codes JUL1113BJ1, JUL1213BJ1, AUG0113BJ1, AUG0213BJ1, AUG2313BJ1, AUG2413BJ1, AUG2513BJ1, SEP2013BJ1, SEP2113BJ1, and OCT2313BJ1), because the containers are missing an allergen advisory statement and may contain traces of peanuts or tree nuts. The recalled product was distributed nationwide in retail stores.
  • Allergy Alert: CB Foods, Inc. (El Monte, CA) recalls Pork Shaomai Dumpling (12.5-lb cases or trays; Case code 002; Est 39932; Produced June 2011 to June 5, 2012), due to the presence of undeclared monosodium glutamate (MSG). The recalled products were shipped to hotels and restaurants in California and Nevada.
  • Food Safety Recall: Lowes Foods advises its customers that Snyder’s – Lance has recalled Hot Buffalo Wing Pieces (12-oz and 2.25-oz) due to possible metallic contamination in the products. No date code or lot code information was included in the advisory.
  • Food Safety Alert: Consumers in and around Chautauqua County, New York are warned not to consume unpasteurized raw farm milk from Castle Farms, after a routine sample of the milk was discovered to be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The producer suspended raw milk sales on June 7, 2012 on being notified of a preliminary positive result. Now that the result has been confirmed, Castle Farms is prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful pathogens.
  • Food Safety Alert: California Department of Public Health (CDPH) warns consumers not to eat soups from One Gun Ranch (sold at Pacific Palisades Farmers Market on May 13, 2012 and June 3, 2012) and Organic Soup Kitchen (sold between June 6, 2011 and May 6, 2012 at Calabasas Farmers Market and Studio City Farmers Market), because they may have been improperly produced, making them susceptible to Clostridium botulinum. Please refer to the CDPH Alert for a list of the affected varieties of soups.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Woolery Enterprises, Inc., dba Will’s Fresh Foods (San Leandro, CA) that an April/May 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns R & L, Inc. (Lima, OH) that a March/April 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Caribe Natural, LLC (Miami, FL) that a September to November 2011 inspection revealed serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling, or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Amor Nino Foods Inc. (Honolulu, HI) that a February/March 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: William Dunne & Associates recalls Burger King Onion Rings Flavoured Snacks (57g and 185g; Codes 2013MA22 and 2013MA23, respectively), due to metal contamination. The recalled product was sold nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Metro Ontario Inc., Planet Foods Inc. and Loblaw Companies Ltd. recall Popchips Sea Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips (85g; Codes 13MA23TM (Metro and Planet Foods only) or 13MA08 (all three companies); UPC 0 82666 71240 4), due to metal contamination. The recalled products were sold nationally by Loblaw, in Ontario by Metro, and in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon by Planet Foods.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): R&R Ice Cream Ltd. recalls Chokablok The Chocolate Extremist, Peanut Butter Nutter, and Billionaires Dynamite ice cream varieties (3 x 80ml multipack; All best before end dates up to and including October 2012), because a production fault may have resulted in the products containing pieces of broken lolly stick. The recalled ice cream products were sold at Tesco and One Stop stores.
  • Food Enforcement Action (UK): A judge has found Elmkirk Limited (an Essex slaughterhouse) guilty under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations on eight charges of delivering over-temperature meat. The company was find £12,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of nearly £26,000.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Singapore): The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority alerts Singapore consumers to the recall in Australia of Casa brand Marinated Feta, due to a risk of E. coli contamination. The retail packs were not imported into Singapore; the 1.5kg trade pack consignment that reached Singapore was not distributed for sale and will be destroyed. Consumers who purchased the affected products overseas should discard them.

United States

  • Consumer Product Safety Recall: California Innovations, Inc. (Toronto, Canada) recalls Cryofreeze Ice/Hot Packs (6″ x 5.5″ and 8.5″ x 8″; Opaque blue wrappers), Cryofreeze Transparent Cell Ice/Hot Packs (three-cell pack and 2-cell pack styles) and Arctic Zone Ice Packs (6.25″ x 4″ with opaque blue wrapper). The recalled products were manufactured in China and sold at mass merchandise and warehouse stores, other retailers, distributors and on-line sellers nationwide between July 2007 and December 2008 in items that retailed between $5 and $28. If damaged, the recalled gel packs can leak gel that could contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which can cause illness if ingested in large amounts.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Scholtens Inc. recalls Granny Appleton Crystallized Ginger (125g; All codes) due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Saputo Inc. recalls Dairyland 1% M.F. Partly Skimmed Milk (120mL; Best before 2012 JN01 and 2012 JN04), due to the presence of harmful extraneous material. The recalled product was distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon.
  • Food Safety Recall: Pepsico Beverages Canada recalls Gatorade Perform G Thirst Quencher – Orange (905mL; Code #0402TT2; UPC 55577 10631), due to the presence of a chemical additive. The recalled product was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (France): Casino recalls Tous Les Jours chez Casino Sardines en Boîte à l’huile végétale/Canned Sardines in vegetable oil  (120g can; Lot #BJ.L 019F; Best by 19/01/2017) and Tous Les Jours chez Casino Sardines en Boîte à la sauce tomate/Canned Sardines in tomato sauce (120g; Lot #BJ.L 020F; Best by 20/01/2015), due to contamination with histamine.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Outbreak Alert (Taiwan): The China Post reports that Taiwan health authorities have seized a batch of raw oysters at a high-end restaurant chain and have launched checks on all oyster imports from South Korea after dozens of consumers in Taipei and Taichung reported symptoms of food poisoning. The outbreak victims reported eating uncooked oysters at the Eatogther chain.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Outbreak Alert Update (Turks and Caicos): Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa has postponed its reopening until June 13 after confirmation from the Ministry of Health that 10 cases of norovirus have been confirmed.

  • Allergy Alert: Best Maid Cookie Company (River Falls, WI) recalls Sienna Bakery® Oatmeal Walnut Raisin Baked Cookies (6/40/1.35-oz; Lot No. 121222011525001 on the master case, 12122201 on the retail box) and Sienna Bakery® White Chocolate Macadamia Baked Cookies (6/40/1.35 oz; Lot Nos. 121222061052009, 121222061052001 on the master case, 12122201 on the retail box), due to the potential of undeclared walnuts. The master cases of product may contain retail boxes that are labeled as White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, but have Oatmeal Walnut Raisin cookies inside. Affected product was sold through GFS Marketplace stores from May 11th through June 7th in the states of Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Affected product was distributed to Gordon Food Service® (GFS) delivery customers from May 11, 2012 through June 7, 2012 in the states of Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
  • Allergy Alert Update: USDA releases retail distribution list for lasagna products that were recalled by Windsor Quality Food Co.
  • Food Safety Recall: Popchips recalls Sea Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips (3-oz bags; UPC 82666 70050; Best by dates of MAY213, MAY0313, MAY 1013LY or MAY2113), because the product may contain metal fragments.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that the outbreak of human Salmonella infections linked to live chicks and ducklings has grown to 123 confirmed cases in 25 states. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized; 36% of the confirmed victims are children 10 years of age or younger. The infected live poultry were supplied by Mt. Healthy Hatchery in Ohio.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Quantimpex Inc. recalls Koska Apricot Preserve (380g; EXP 22 11 2013; Lot #17 326), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. The recalled product was distributed in Ontario and Quebec.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Ireland): Supervalu withdraws Supervalu Nice Price Milk Chocolate Wafer Biscuit (125g pack size; All batches and All best before dates), due to inconsistent egg allergen labelling.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Marcel Baey recalls Marcel BAEY Flétan Fumé/Smoked Halibut (sliced or whole; Lot Nos. 124 12, 125 12, 128 12, 130 12 et 131 12; Best before dates 02/06/12, 03/06/12, 06/06/12, 08/06/12 et 09/06/12, respectively), due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed across France.
  • Consumer Product Safety Recall (Belgium): Trafic recalls Metaltex Kitchen Utensil Set (pkg of 5 melamine kitchen utensils; Sold from March 2011 to May 2012), due to excessive levels of melamine and formaldehyde.
  • Outbreak Alert (Switzerland): Approximately 40 military recruits are being treated in the infirmary for vomiting and diarrhea believed to be of viral origin. Diagnostic tests are being carried out to determine whether the outbreak is due to norovirus.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (UK): The Health Protection Agency reports an additional 60 cases of cryptosporidiosis were confirmed in four affected regions of England between June 1st and June 7th, bringing the total number of cases in these regions to 327 since May 11, 2012. There is no evidence that public water supplies are the source of the spike in illnesses in these regions.

The recalled milk was sold from Woolworths, Coles, BP service stations and smaller independent outlets in Northern Territory only.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Casa recalls Casa Marinated Feta (250g plastic jar; Best before 01OCT12, 26OCT12, 31OCT12 and 14NOV12), due to E. coli contamination. The recalled product was sold at Coles supermarkets, IGA stores and independent supermarkets in Western Australia.
