  • Allergy Alert: Tyson Foods, Inc. (Pine Bluff, AR) recalls 67,269 pounds of packages labeled as Honey BBQ Flavored Boneless Chicken Wyngz, due to the presence of undeclared milk, soy and egg. Due to a packaging error, Buffalo style Boness Chicken Wyngz were packaged in bags meant for the Honey BBQ Flavored product. The recalled products were manufactured on Aug 7 and 8, 2012 and distributed to retail stores nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bliss Unlimited, LLC (Eugene, OR) recalls Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (1 pt; UPC 8 96767 00121 9; Stamp #41-61; Date range Nov 11 2012 through Oct 24 2013), because the product contains peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationwide between November 2010 and December 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Falcon Trading Company, Inc./SunRidge Farms (Royal Oak, CA) recalls Sunridge Chocolate Brownie Squares (10 lb case; UPC 086700211168; All lot codes), Sunridge Chocolate Double Decker Chew (10 lb case; UPC 086700211175; All lot codes), Sunridge (labeled Sunland) Peanut Butter Crunchy with Salt – Organic (35 lb tub; UPC 086700161852; All lot codes) and Sunridge (labeled Sunland) Peanut Butter Creamy No Salt – Organic (35 lb tub; UPC 086700161869; All lot codes), because the products contain peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Food Safety Recall: Belfonte Ice Cream and Dairy Foods Company recalls Belfonte Home Run Sundae (56 oz rectangular carton; UPC 83057-91023; Best by dates 04/08/2011, 05/07/2011, 06/03/2011, 06/08/2012, 03/13/2014, 04/26/2014, 06/21/2014, 07/27/2014) and Belfonte Mama’s Choice Reverse Peanut Butter Pie (56 oz rounded square container; UPC 83057-17033; Best by dates 07/15/2011, 10/02/2011, 12/02/2011, 02/09/2012, 04/06/2012, 06/02/2012), because the products contain peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were sold between April 2010 and October 2012 in retail and convenience stores in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
  • Food Safety Recall: Clemmy’s Ice Cream (Rancho Mirage, CA) recalls Clemmy’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip ice cream (1 pt container; UPC 8 94509 00231 9; Code date range 11038 – 12215; Best before 02/13 through 08/14), because the ice cream contains peanut butter supplied by Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was sold nationwide through grocery stores beginning in March 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Smith Dairy Products Company recalls SMITH’s Peanut Butter Crunch Ice Cream (1.75 qt and ½-gal; UPC 70424 08139; Lots 060-10 through 155-12), Acme Peanut Butter Twist Ice Cream (½-gal; UPC 29313 46110; Lots 03/01/10 through 06/03/12), Ruggles Peanut Butter Crunch Ice Cream (3 gal; UPC 70424 08607; Lots 060-10 through 155-12) and Ruggles Peanut Butter Brownie Crunch (3 gal; UPC 70424 08639; Lots 060-10 through 155-12), because the products contain peanut butter candy pieces recalled by Pecan Deluxe (the peanut butter in these candy pieces was supplied by Sunland, Inc.) and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Michigan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Nina International (Hyattsville, MD) recalls Nina International Ground Hot Pepper (5 oz; UPC 745851004004), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC through African and ethnic retail food stores. The contamination was discovered as a result of a routine testing program.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rich Products Corporation recalls Jon Donaire® Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Cake (UPC 049800626836; Best by October 5, 2010 – January 19, 2013) and TCBY® Peanut Buttery Fudge Deep Dish Frozen Yogurt Pie (Julian dates 14070048 – 14072156; Best by November 14, 2010 – March 1, 2013), because the products contain ingredients sourced from a supplier that used Sunland, Inc. peanuts, and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Jon Donaire® product was sold through in-store bakeries nationwide; the TCBY® product was sold exclusively to TCBY® stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: BGC Manufacturing recalls Goldenbrook Farms Peanut Butter Bash Ice Cream (½ gallon cartons; UPC 0009282530538) because the product contains peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was sold in Brookshire Grocery retail stores through Texas, Louisiana and Southern Arkansas between May 2010 and September 2012.
  • Food Safety Recall: Toft Dairy recalls Buckeye Bites Ice Cream (48 oz carton/ UPC 19473-00602 & 3-gal tub / Product code 874; Expiration dates March 14, 2013 or before), because the product contains a peanut butter base that was made using peanut butter from Sunland, Inc. and may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed throughout Ohio and Southern Michigan.
  • Outbreak Alert (Vancouver, WA): Clark County Public Health is investigating eleven confirmed and five probable cases of Salmonella reported by patrons of On the Border restaurant (1505 SE 164th Ave., Vancouver, WA). Anyone who ate at the restaurant between September 20th and October 8th and is experiencing symptoms of salmonellosis should contact a health care provider.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Greek Diamond International recalls Greek Diamond brand Greek Honey Wild Flower Honey (1 kg; Lot 08112; Best before 21/03/2014; UPC 6 27763 10033 6), due to the presence of drug residues. The recalled product was sold in Quebec.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed a twelfth case of E. coli O157 linked to beef from XL Foods, Inc. Four provinces are affected: Alberta (7 cases), Newfoundland and Labrador (1 case), Quebec (3 cases) and British Columbia (1 case).

  • Food Safety Alert (India): BBC reports that authorities in Trivandrum, Kerala have shut down a KFC restaurant after a customer complained that he was served a meal contain live worms.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide to retailers and food service suppliers, including US Foods.
  • Food Safety Recall: General Mills recalls Cascadian Farm Sweet & Salty Peanut Pretzel Bars, Cascadian Farm Sweet & Salty Mixed Nut Granola Bars, Cascadian Farm Peanut Butter Chip Chewy Granola Bars, Cascadian Farm Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bars, and Cascadian Farm Trail Mix Dark Chocolate Cranberry Chewy Granola Bars (Best if Used By: 01NOV2012 and 02NOV2012), because these products may contain peanut pieces from Sunland, Inc., and may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Millington Seafood, LLC that an August 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nick & Katie’s Inc. (New Orleans, LA) That a May-June 2012 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility found serious deviations from FDA’s Low-Acid Canned Food regulations and Acidified Foods regulations, and with applicable parts of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) provisions.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Finland): FK Trube Oy Kuopiosta recalls Blueberry-Raspberry Filled Bun (225g; Best before 16/10/2012), due to a packaging error that may have resulted in some packages containing Apple-filled buns. These incorrectly filled packages contain undeclared apple and cinnamon.
  • Allergy Alert (Luxembourg): Revogan recalls Valpiform pain de mie (Lot #12144; Best before 14/08/2012, 05/09/2012, 21/08/2012) because the “peanut-free” products contain traces of peanut.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): Johma Salades BV recalls Salmon Salad due to possible contamination with Salmonella Thompson. The recalled salad was sold by Aldi Nord in the regions of Bremen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): The outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that sickened more than 11,000 people was traced to contaminated strawberries that originated in China.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert/Recall (UK): Sanofi Pasteur MSD recalls 16 batches of Typhim Vi typhoid vaccine (distributed from 7 January 2011 onward) following filling problems in the manufacturing process that may have reduced the effectiveness of the vaccine.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1400): Salmonella Dublin in beef meat from Ireland; distributed to Denmark.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1401): Undeclared sulphite in dried goji berries from China; distributed to Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1403): Pseudomonas aeruginosa in spring water from Poland; distributed to Poland and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1404): Salmonella Amersfoort in laurel leaves, oregano, basil from Turkey, via Germany; distributed to Norway.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1405): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled monktail from the United Kingdom; distributed to Italy.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.1406): Salmonella infantis in processed animal proteins from the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Supplement Safety Notification (EU #2012.1408): Arsenic in food supplement from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Estonia, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety/Outbreak Notification (EU #2012.1409): Foodborne outbreak suspected to be caused by frozen strawberries from China; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1411): Glass fragments in mackerel fillet with olive oil from Spain; distributed to Austria and Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1412): Aflatoxins in dried figs from Turkey; distributed to Denmark.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Yeung Ng Tong Medical Manufactory Limited recalls Tiao Jing Bu Xue Pills and Yeung Ng Tong Tin Hee Pills, after the Department of Health laboratory detected the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs diclofenac and indomethacin in a sample of the product.
  • Outbreak Alert (India): An outbreak of gastroenteritis in Gandhi Camp area of Batala in Gurdaspur district has claimed eleven lives. Thirty other people are recovering in hospital, and twenty others who also were hospitalized have since recovered. The outbreak was due to the mixing of sewage with potable water.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Pharmaceutical Product Alert/Recall (Australia): Sanofi-Aventis Australia Pty Ltd recalls Typhim Vi 0.025mg/0.5mL Salmonella typhi Vi polysaccharide vaccine injection syringe (Syringe Batch #E1246, G0461, H0078, H0101, H0198 H0507; Expiry 10/2012, 08/2013, 01/2014, 02/2014, 04/2014, 09/2014 respectively, because the affected batches may have lower than expected antigen content, which may result in reduced efficacy. The results of recent investigations by Sanofi Pasteur suggest heterogeneity (non-uniformity) in the content of the active component (polysaccharide) in some syringes within these batches.

  • Food Safety Recall: Boucherie W.E. Bégin, inc (Saint-Jean, QC) recalls Fesse Braisée Tranchée / Sliced Ham (vacuum packaged, Best before 11 October 2012 or Sliced to order, packaged 26 and 27 September, 2012), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall: UNFI Canada Inc. recalls Popcorn Indiana brand Aged White Cheddar Popcorn (255g & 225g; UPC 8 43571 00078 5; Best by 18/FEB/2013 & 25/FEB/2013, respectively), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, and may have also been distributed in other provinces.
  • Food Safety Recall: To-Le-Do Foodservice Ltd. recalls a number of To-Le-Do beef products (code dates September 10, 25, & 26, 2012) due to potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The recalled products were supplied to hotels, restaurants and institutions in Manitoba.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: CBC News reports that Sanofi Pasteur has recalled batches of Typhim Vi vaccine (Batch #G1122-1, G1557-1, G0182-2 & H0176-1), used to immunize people against Salmonella typhi, because the amount of antigen varied in some syringes.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: The outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses linked to recalled meat from XL Foods, Inc. (Brooks, AB) has grown to eleven cases, in Alberta (7 cases), Newfoundland and Labrador (1 case in the Eastern Region), Quebec (2 cases) and British Columbia (1 case reported from Vancouver Island). As of October 2nd, an additional 13 cases also were under investigation in Saskatchewan.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Belgium): Natura S.p.r.l recalls Natura brand Cocktail Sauce (180g and 310g jars; DDM between 1/10/2012 and 3/04/2013), because the product contains undeclared celery.
  • Allergy Alert (Belgium): Revogan recalls Valpiform brand Pain de mie tranché (350g; Lot 12144; Expiry 21/11/2012) and Pain de mie aux fibres (350g; Lot #12145; Expiry 22/11/2012 & 24/11/2012), because the products, which are labeled “sans arachides” contain undeclared peanut.
  • Food Safety Recall (Belgium): S.p.r.l Bella Sicilia recalls Marte brand Ricotta Torretta (850-1000g; Lot #131212 & 100113; Best before dates of 13/12/2012 & 10/01/2013, respectively), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Itu Biodyn Ltd. recalls Holle Bio-Babybrei 3-Korn baby food (Made in Germany; Batch #R11171; Expiry 04/25/2013), because the product contains ochratoxin A in excess of the allowable limit.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (UK): BBC reports that Sanofi Pasteur MSD has recalled 88% of its Typhim Vi vaccine stock because tests found that some samples were too weak. Individuals who were injected with the vaccine since January 2011 may not be fully immunized against typhoid.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Germany): The outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that sickened more than 11,000 individuals – most of them children – ws traced to a batch of frozen strawberries. The Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Consumer Protection has detected noroviruses in a sample from this batch of strawberries.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert/Recall (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety has been advised by Canada that some of the beef products recalled by XL Foods Inc. were supplied to Hong Kong. These products were recalled due to potential contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The Centre has alerted the trade and has instructed importers and distributors to recall the affected products.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Amedis Company Limited recalls Inflexal V 2012/2013 seasonal influenza vaccine (All batches) as a result of a global recall announced by the manufacturer, Crucell. Two batches of the product at the Crucell’s Swiss manufacturing site were found to be contaminated with bacteria.
  • Proprietary Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Peking Health Products Company recalls Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Wan (Batch No.20120603W), because the total bacteria count of 61,000 is 6-fold higher than the permitted limit.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (Hong Kong): GlaxoSmithKline Ltd. recalls Panadol Cold & Flu Hot Remedy – Lemon with Honey (Batch #2004), due to an error in printing the expiration date.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Woolworths Ltd. recalls Woolworths Almond Kernels (Best before 05/02/13, 06/04/13, 07/04/13, 12/04/13), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled nuts were distributed nationally at Woolworths Supermarkets, Safeway, Food for Less, and Flemings Supermarkets.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Health officials are warning the public, restaurants and cafés to cook liver and other organ meats thoroughly. Twenty-six cases of Campylobacter infections have been linked to consumption of liver in the past year.
  • Outbreak Alert (New Zealand): Three patients and 13 staff members of Rotorua Hospital were infected with norovirus between September 18th and 21st. The outbreak may also have spread to a rest home.
