OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC reports 55 cases of Salmonella Stanley infections (6 hospitalizations) in 12 states linked to consumption of wood ear mushrooms distributed by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. CDC believes this outbreak is now over, and FDA has completed its investigation.

Food Safety Recall: Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc. recalls Natural Grocers Brand Organic Whole Elderberries (4 oz; Pack dates 20-216, 20-225, 20-246, 20-265 & 20-281) due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Pet Food Safety Recall: Grassland Beef recalls Dr. Siegel’s S. A. F. E. Petfood, Ground Beef 70% Lean / 30% Fat Net Wt.: 2 lb 18841 (Batch code 20157) due to E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The recalled product was shipped directly to consumers nationwide and one retail location in Florida.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA issues Warning Letter to Fresh Express Inc – Div of Chiquita Brands following investigation into a 2020 Cyclospora outbreak linked to the company’s bagged salad mixes. During its investigation, FDA recovered Cyclospora cayetanensis from two samples collected to the north and south of where the farm accessed canal water for seepage irrigation. FDA also experienced delays in receiving requested documents from Fresh Express that were needed to conduct the traceback investigation.

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: CDC reports 10 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections in Florida (1), Massachusetts (7) and New York (2). All 10 outbreak victims were hospitalized and the Florida patient died. The outbreak appears to be associated with deli meats, but CDC has not been able to establish a specific source of the infections.

OUTBREAK ALERT: CDC reports 23 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections in 12 states. Ten of the 23 victims required hospitalization. Investigators have not yet identified the source of this outbreak.

OUTBREAK ALERT FINAL UPDATE: CDC reports 101 confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in 17 states linked to consumption of Wawona peaches. This outbreak now appears to be over. The FDA traceback and root cause investigation continues.

Food Safety Recall: Taher, Inc. recalls approximately 22,096 pounds of meat products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Canada

OUTBREAK ALERT FINAL UPDATE: PHAC reports 57 confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in Ontario (41) and Quebec (16) linked to consumption of peaches imported from the USA. This outbreak now appears to be over.

OUTBREAK ALERT: PHAC reports 21 confirmed cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illness in Saskatchewan (1), Quebec (7), New Brunswick (10), and Prince Edward Island (3). One person has been hospitalized. The outbreak is linked to consumption of shellfish, mainly raw oysters, harvested from eastern coastal waters.

Food Safety Recall: National Herring Co. recalls Adar brand Schmaltz Herring in Oil (300g; Best Before 20NO28 20 175; UPC 0 62451 00128 9) due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

OUTBREAK ALERT (UK): The Food Standards Agency and Public Health England report 390 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to frozen, raw, breaded chicken products. Two different strains of Salmonella Enteritidis have been detected in this outbreak. Two product recalls have already been initiated in conjunction with this ongoing investigation. Food Safety Alert (Spain): The Catalan Public Health Agency has suspended the activities of EMBUTIDOS SOLA SA and has ordered a recall of all fuet/espetec products manufactured by the company, due to Salmonella contamination. Products manufactured by EMBUTIDOS SOLA SA were linked to a recent outbreak of Salmonella infections in France.
