United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, continues to investigate consumer complaints of gastrointestinal illness and abnormal liver function that may be attributable to eating Daily Harvest French Lentil & Leek Crumbles frozen product. The FDA has received 369 illness reports, including 125 hospitalizations. Reports have been submitted by consumers in 37 states. Daily Harvest recalled the implicated product on June 23, 2022.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: CDC reports 84 confirmed outbreak cases of E. coli O157:H7, including 38 hospitalizations, in four states. Although a source has not been confirmed, the agency advises that many sick people reported eating sandwiches with romaine lettuce at Wendy’s restaurants in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania before getting sick. The FDA has initiated an on-site inspection of an unspecified location in connection with this outbreak investigation.

Food Safety Recall: D. F. Stauffer Biscuit Co., Inc. recalls Market Pantry White Fudge Animal Cookies (44 oz; Lot #Y052722; Time stamp from 15:00 to 23:00; Best by 21FEB2023; UPC 085239817698) due to possible foreign matter contamination (metal). The recalled product was distributed to Target stores nationwide.

Food Safety Recall: Pizza John’s recalls approximately 156,498 pounds of pepperoni pizza products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Food Safety Recall: Piantedosi Baking Company, Inc. recalls select dinner rolls, sandwich rolls and bun products due to potential microbial contamination. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

Canada

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The Public Health Agency of Canada reports an increase in the number of non-travel related Cyclospora infections to 300 outbreak cases in five provinces: Alberta (1), British Columbia (3), Newfoundland and Labrador (3), Ontario (244), and Quebec (49). The source of this outbreak has not been identified.

Allergy Alert: Chuang’s Company Ltd. recalls Delizia brand Vegetarian Ham (500g; Batch codes 82500, 83140, 90121, 91381, 92081; UPC 8 16432 00529 8) due to undeclared wheat and gluten. The recalled product was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.

Allergy Alert: Mrakovic Fine Foods Inc. recalls Mrakovic Fine Foods brand Natural Chicken Burger (678g; All codes where egg is not declared on the label; UPC 8 14945 00062 5) due to undeclared egg.

Food Safety Recall: Boulangerie Meilleure Qualité Chomedey Ltee (Laval, QC) recalls multiple baked goods and pastries due to the possibility that they may be unsafe to consume. Please refer to the recall notice for additional details.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The CDC investigation into an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses of unknown source is ongoing. There are now 37 confirmed cases, including 10 hospitalizations, in four states. Cases have been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. A specific food has not yet been confirmed as the source of this outbreak, but many sick people reported eating sandwiches with romaine lettuce at Wendy’s restaurants in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania before getting sick. Based on this information, Wendy’s is taking the precautionary measure of removing the romaine lettuce being used in sandwiches from restaurants in that region.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues a public health alert due to concerns that specific Hawaii Big Island Beef brand ground beef products may be adulterated with E. coli O157:H7. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were distributed only in Hawaii.

Food Safety Recall: Kingdom Creamery of Vermont recalls fourteen (14) ice cream products sold under multiple brand names due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Please follow the link for details of the affected products, which were distributed to consignees in Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. No public recall notice has been issued. Consignees were notified of the recall by telephone.

Food Safety Recall: Blue Diamond Growers recalls multiple batch codes of Whole Brown Almonds (bulk) due to Salmonella contamination. No public recall notice has been issued. Consignees in the United States (California, Colorado and Illinois), Germany, Morocco, and Canada were notified of the recall by email.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety is pursuing an investigation into two food poisoning clusters involving sandwiches, including inspecting the food factory concerned. A sample of smoked salmon collected from the premises was found to contain a pathogen, Group D Salmonella.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: CDC is assisting with the investigation of a 29-case outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections in Michigan (15) and Ohio (14). Nine people have been hospitalized. The source of the illnesses has not yet been found.

Allergy Alert: The Gluten Free Bar recalls The GFB Dark Chocolate Coconut Bites ( 1.2 oz; Lot code 041323-174; UPC 856818008895) due to undeclared cashew.

Canada

Allergy Alert: Chuang’s Company Ltd. recalls Delizia brand Vegetarian Ham (500g; Lot code 81610; UPC 8 16432 00529 8) due to undeclared gluten and wheat. The recalled product was sold in British Columbia.

Allergy Alert: Sher Produce recalls various Sher the Love brand Fruit and Veggie Squares due to improperly declared milk. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were sold in Ontario.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE (Denmark): The Statens Serum Institut reports 21 confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in an outbreak of unknown origin that began at the end of March 2022. Most of the cases have occurred in the Capital Region and Zealand Region.
