United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: After 407 confirmed illnesses in 44 states, 158 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths, the CDC has declared the Salmonella outbreak associated with Mexican cantaloupes to be at an end. According to the FDA, all of the implicated cantaloupes should now be past their useable shelf life.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The CDC reports that 47 confirmed Salmonella illnesses in 22 states have been linked to consumption of charcuterie meats. Ten people have been hospitalized.

FOOD SAFETY ALERT UPDATE: FDA advises restaurants and food retailers not to serve or sell and to dispose of oysters and consumers not to eat oysters from Sociedad Acuicola GolPac (MX 06 SP) harvested from Bahia Salina, Sonora, Mexico on 12/18/2023 or 12/27/2023 because they may be contaminated with norovirus. This is an expansion of an earlier food safety advisory.

Public Health Alert: FSIS has issued a Public Health Alert for Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler and Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta, sold at Costco and Sam’s Club, as these products have been linked to the Salmonella outbreak mentioned above. Although the products have been recalled, the FSIS is concerned that some product may still be in consumers’ refrigerators. Please refer to the FSIS alert for additional details.

Public Health Alert: FSIS issues a public health alert because Dim Sum Factory Inc., a Flushing, N.Y., establishment, produced and distributed raw, frozen pork dumpling products without the benefit of federal inspection. Please refer to the alert for details on the affected product.

Allergy Alert: Hans Kissle recalls MEXICAN STYLE QUINOA SALAD (7 oz; Use by 1/22/24; UPC 036217172018) due to undeclared egg and soy.

Allergy Alert: Whitley’s Peanut Factory recalls Deluxe Nut Mix (12 oz; Lot codes MFG 22823, MFG 25023, MFG 25823, MFG 29323, MFG 35623; UPC 703795000551) due to undeclared peanuts, milk, soy, wheat, and sesame.

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION (Sweden): The Public Health Agency is investigating an outbreak of 68 cases of Cryptosporidium illness that began in December 2023. Although a specific source of the outbreak has not yet been determined, authorities suspect a fresh food.

OUTBREAK ALERT UPDATE: Contaminated red onions produced by Thomson International, Inc. (Bakersfield, CA) are linked to 396 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport infections and 59 hospitalizations. Thomson has recalled all red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions shipped from May 1, 2020 to present.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT: USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issues a public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTE) beef and chicken taquitos and chimichangas products containing FDA-regulated diced green chilies that have been recalled by the producer, Sun Valley Foods, LLC based in El Paso, Texas, due to concerns that the products may be contaminated with foreign matter (pieces of hard plastic). OUTBREAK ALERT and Food Safety Recall (Update): Botsis Fruits & Vegetables Inc., Fresh Forward Inc., Freshpoint Canada Inc., Fruiticana Produce Ltd., Krown Produce Inc., Persia Foods Products Inc., Seoul Trading Corp., Sewa Enterprises Ltd., and Sysco Canada Inc. recall red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions grown by Thomson International Inc., Bakersfield, California, and imported from the USA. The red onions have been linked to an outbreak of 120 Salmonella Newport infections in 7 provinces. Seventeen Canadians have been hospitalized.

United States

Outbreak Alert: CDC and FDA are alerting consumers to an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses traced to Caribeña brand Maradol papayas grown in Mexico and distributed in the USA by Grande Produce, San Juan, Texas. Federal agencies, working together with the Maryland Department of Health and other state agencies have identified 47 Salmonella Kiambu cases in 12 states. The numbers are current as of July 21, 2017. FDA advises consumers not to eat the implicated papayas.

Food Safety Recall: The Idaho Foodbank recalls approximately 27,000 pounds of Coconut Beverage, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Eggs, and Cheese Products, because they were not continuously maintained or stored at the required temperature due to a malfunction in the cooler. Please refer to the recall notice for additional details on affecgted products, which were distributed in Southwest and North-Central Idaho.

Food Safety Recall: Bush Brothers & Company recalls Bush’s Best brand Brown Sugar Hickory Baked Beans (28-oz can; Lot codes 6097S GF and 6097P GF; best by Jun 2019; UPC 0 39400 01977 0), Bush’s Best brand Country Style Baked Beans (28-oz. can; Lot codes 6077S RR, 6077P RR, 6087S RR, and 6087P RR; Best by Jun 2019; UPC 0 39400 01974 9) and Bush’s Best brand Original Baked Beans (28-oz. can; Lot codes 6057S LC and 6057P LC; Best by Jun 2019; UPC 0 39400 01614 4) due to defective side seams. Food Safety Recall: Bhu Foods recalls various flavors of Protein Bars due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected products, which were available nationwide in retail stores as well as by mail order/direct delivery.

Food Safety Recall: Cesina Sausage Company recalls CESINA’S BRAND FULLY COOKED SMOKED PORK KOLBASSI (1-lb. vacuumed packed packages; produced June 22, 2017) because the product label identifies this product as ready-to-eat, when in fact this product is not-ready-to-eat.

Food Safety Recall (Update): Industry expands is earlier recall of various brands of butter due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination to include additional product information. Food Safety Recall (Australia): MS & HJ TYLER recalls Moo view dairy raw cow’s milk (1 litre, 2 litre, 3 litre; no date markings) due to Cryptosporidium contamination. The recalled milk was sold on line and at the farm gate in South Australia.
