United States

OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION: The FDA is investigating a possible multistate Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has sickened 15 people, including 12 in Nebraska. The outbreak is thought to be associated with consumption of raw alfalfa sprouts.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Big Olaf Creamery LLC that an inspection of the company’s ready-to-eat (RTE) ice cream manufacturing facility revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in multiple environmental swab samples and finished product samples, and other infractions of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food regulation. Products manufactured in this facility were found to be the source of a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes illnesses earlier this year.

FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Bainbridge Beverage West, LLC that an inspection of the company’s juice manufacturing facility revealed significant violations of the FDA’s juice HACCP regulations and the Juice HACCP Hazards and Controls Guidance. The company did not respond to the list of Inspectional Observations (Form 483) supplied to company management at the close of the inspection.

Food Safety Recall: Jan K. Overweel Limited recalls Igor brand Gorgonzola mild ripened blue-veined cheese (150g; Lot 27716006; Best before 23/FE/01; UPC 8 021398 256802) due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Europe

Allergy Alert (Netherlands): Jan Linders supermarkten recalls Jan Linders appeltjesbrood / Apple bread (480g; Best before 03-01-2023) due to undeclared almonds.

Allergy Alert (Spain): AESAN updates list of dark chocolate products recalled due to undeclared almonds. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.

OUTBREAK UPDATE: Salmonella infections across Ontario linked to alfalfa sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts produced by Sunsprout Natural Foods of Brantford, Ontario have caused 37 people to be infected with Salmonella, according to a spokesperson with Ontario’s Ministry of Health.

Infections have been reported from 19 of Ontario’s 34 public health units, and the cases are scattered across the province.

Four people have been hospitalized.

Sunsprout has initiated a series of recalls since August 11th. The following recalled products were distributed only in Ontario:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

Ontarians are encouraged to refer to the recall notice posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website and follow the advice provided.

a. Ontarians are reminded to check their fridges and freezers for the recalled product and if any is found, it is recommended that it be thrown out right away

b. Individuals are encouraged to visit Health Canada’s Food Safety and You website for additional resources/tips on food safety and safe food handling, particularly individuals at high risk for serious health effects from foodborne illness (young children, seniors, or people with weak immune systems)

c. It is important for Ontarians to remember, even when not eating out regularly, foods purchased and brought into the home can be contaminated and cause illness

i.    All fruits and vegetables should be washed

ii.   Clean counters and cutting boards

iii.  Keeping cold foods cold and hot foods hot

iv.   Cook foods to appropriate internal temperature

v.    Reduce cross contamination by keeping raw foods separate from ready to eat foods and foods that have already been washed and heated, washing hands regularly and cleaning food contact surfaces between use.

OUTBREAK ALERT (ONTARIO): Public Health Ontario is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to alfalfa sprouts produced by Sunsprout Natural Foods. No details of the outbreak have been released. Please refer to the recall notices listed below.
