Two dead, 28 hospitalized in new US Listeria outbreak

Two people are dead and twenty-eight (28) have been admitted to hospital in an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to meats sliced at deli counters, according to a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A total of twenty-eight confirmed outbreak cases have been reported so far by twelve states, including: Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Maryland (6), Massachusetts (2), Minnesota (1), Missouri (2), New Jersey (2), New York (7), North Carolina (1), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (2), and Wisconsin (1).

The two deaths occurred in Illinois and New Jersey.

Sixteen out of eighteen people (89%) interviewed by public health officials reported eating meats sliced at a deli, most commonly deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham. Meats were sliced at a variety of supermarket and grocery store delis.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is working to identify the suppliers of deli meats, sliced at deli counters, purchased by people in this outbreak.

The CDC warns that the number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.

CDC advises people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system to contact their healthcare provider if they have any Listeria symptoms.  Additionally, CDC advises people to take steps to protect themselves from getting Listeria from deli meats by avoiding eating meats sliced at the deli unless they are heated before eating.

  • Symptoms usually start within 2 weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria, but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after.
    • Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
    • People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.
  • Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have weakened immune systems. This is because Listeria is more likely to spread beyond their gut to other parts of their body, resulting in a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis.
  • For people who are pregnantListeria can cause pregnancy loss, premature birth, or a life-threatening infection in their newborn.
  • For people who are 65 years or older or who have a weakened immune systemListeria often results in hospitalization and sometimes death.

Canadian Listeria outbreak claims two lives

Two people are dead in an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes that has now spread beyond the borders of Ontario, according to information just released by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

At latest count, the PHAC has confirmed 12 cases of Listeria monocytogenes in three provinces: Ontario (10), Québec (1), and Nova Scotia (1). Nine of the 12 outbreak patients have been hospitalized.

The outbreak has been linked to plant-based refrigerated beverages.

Danone has recalled 18 products, marketed under the Silk and Great Value brand names. All of the recalled products bear a product code that includes “7825.”

The recalled products were manufactured for Danone Canada by a third party located in Ontario and distributed across Canada.

Danone has halted all production and shipments coming from this facility until further notice, pending completion of the investigation.

The PHAC has provided the following information and advice for Canadian consumers.

  • Check to see if you have recalled products in your homes or establishment by looking for the specific product name and size, UPC and codes in the recall alert.
  • Do not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute recalled products or any product made with them.
  • Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact their retailer.
  • Do not cook food for other people if you’ve been diagnosed with a Listeria infection or any other gastrointestinal illness.
  • Contact your health care provider if you think you’re experiencing symptoms of Listeria infection.

Those who are most at risk of becoming sick with severe listeriosis include:

  • People with weakened immune systems (unable to fight diseases easily).
  • Adults over the age of 60. The risk increases with age due to a weakening immune system.
  • People who are pregnant, including their unborn or newborn baby.

Symptoms of listeriosis can start as early as 3 days after eating contaminated food, and may include:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • cramps
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • headache
  • constipation
  • muscle aches

In severe cases, the bacteria can spread to the nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and nerves). Symptoms of severe listeriosis include:

  • stiff neck
  • confusion
  • headache
  • loss of balance

Symptoms of severe listeriosis may appear up to 70 days after an individual has been exposed to Listeria.
