United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Dole Fresh Vegetables recalls Dole Hearts of Romaine bagged salad (UPC 143000956; Lot code 0540N165112A or B; Use by June 26), after a random sample test conducted by FDA yielded a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The bagged salads were available at Giant Food Stores, LLC and possibly at other retail grocery stores and supermarkets.
  • Food Safety Recall: Mexicali Cheese Corp (Woodhaven, NY) recalls Mexicali Queso Fresco Mexicano, Mexican Style Fresh Cheese and Acatlan Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese (14-oz plastic tub; Plant #36-0128; Code 071512), after testing of a routine sample obtained by New York State discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheese was distributed in the metropolitan New York City area, including Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Standard Process Inc. (Palmyra, WI) recalls Cataplex ACP (Product #0700 and 0750), Cataplex C (Product #1650 and 1655) and Pancreatrophin PMG (Product #6650) dietary supplements (60cc and 200cc amber glass bottles; Lot 114; Best Use by 5/13) after routine FDA record inspection revealed that one of the ingredients used in these products potentially was contaminated with Salmonella. The products were sold to consumers through health care professionals.
  • Food Spoilage Recall: Lowes Foods recalls DeLallo Flat Fillet Anchovies (2 oz; UPC 7236830150; Lot# 4122A; Date 8/1/2013) and DeLallo Rolled Anchovies with Capers (2 oz; UPC 7236830100; Lot# IH246; Date 9/5/2013) due to possible spoilage.
  • Food Safety Advisory: Karlin Foods Corp advises that Laura Lynn brand salad mixes may contain metal shavings after learning from Kerry Ingredients that they had discovered metal shavings in an ingredient. Laura Lynn branded products are sold by Ingles Markets, Inc. Please refer to the notification letter for details of affected products. This is not a product recall.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is investigating a cluster of three cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses in eastern Missouri. The source of the illness cluster is under investigation. Vibrio parahaemolyticus typically is associated with consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Uncle T Foods Ltd. (Richmond, BC) recalls Lotte brand Choco Pie (168g packages/UPC 8 801062 161881; 336g packages/UPC 801062 160709 or 8 801062 16825; All date codes), due to the presence of undeclared almonds. The recalled product was distributed in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, and may have been distributed in other provinces as well.
  • Allergy Alert: Pâtisseries Sanda Inc. (Brossard, QC) expands its earlier recall to include Milles-Feuilles, Custard (450g; UPC 8 93837 00048 6; All codes) and Milles-Feuilles, Napoleon (450g; UPC 3 93837 00049 3; All codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Treasure Mills Inc. (Newmarket, ON) recalls Brownie Club Packs (Lot Coe 125-121; UPC 805658450807; best before May 29th, May 30th, May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd) after a tiny piece of plastic was reported in one of the Brownie Club Packs. The recalled products were sold in Costco Warehouse stores in Ontario.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): The Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta alerts the public to the recall of Sliced Albacore Tuna (Produced by Hijos de albalabejo Garcia S.L., Spain; Lot A12/28211), due to the presence of carbon monoxide. The recalled tuna was distributed in Italy by Carrefour – Società Sviluppo.

United States

  • Food Safety Recall: Bi-Lo alerts its customers to the recall of Southern Home Pasta Salad Creamy Parmesan (UPC 6-07880-02892; Lot 042013CA85/04/20/2013 and 052113CA85/05/21/2013) and Southern Home Pasta Salad Ranch/Bacon (7.5 oz; UPC 6-07880-02891; Lot 051713CB85/05/17/2013, 051813CA85/05/18/2013, and 051813CB85/05/18/2013) due to potential contamination with small metal fragments.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that six separate multistate outbreaks of human Salmonella infections have been associated with exposure to small turtles. Twenty-eight states have reported a total of 149 confirmed illnesses caused by Salmonella Sandiego, Salmonella Pomona and Salmonella Poona. Sixty-four percent (64%) of the victims are children of 10 years of age or younger; 28% are children less than 1 year old. Twenty-eight people have been hospitalized. Epidemiological and environmental studies indicate that exposure to turtles or their environments (e.g., water from a turtle habitat) is the cause of these outbreak.s

Canada

  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert/Recall: Floyd Nutrition LLC recalls ZXT Gold Bee Pollen Capsules, a weight loss product, because the capsules have been found to contain the pharmaceutical ingredients sibutramine and phenolphthalein, which may pose serious health risks. The product is not authorized for sale in Canada.

Europe

  • Pharmaceutical Product Recall (France): Merck Serono recalls Ovitrelle® (choriogonadotropine alfa) 250 microgram injectable solution in prefilled syringes (Lot BA008998; Expiry September 2013), after receiving complaints about missing needles.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall (Finland): EVIRA announces that last week’s recall of Jack3D food supplement due to the presence of 1,3 dimethylamylamine (DMAA) has been expanded to include additional products. Please refer to the recall notice for a list of affected products and manufacturers.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0892): Mold infestation in wafers with fresh eggs from Germany; distributed to Czech Republic.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0893): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled bio salad from Italy; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0894): Suspected shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in spicy minced meat from Belgium; distributed to Belgium, Germany and Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0895 & 2012.0896): Chloramphenicol in frozen shrimps from Vietnam; distributed to Denmark and Sweden.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0897): Salmonella Adozi in wheat bran from Côte d’Ivoire; distributed to Norway.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0898): Salmonella spp. and excessive Enterobacteriaceae in meat and bone meal from Poland; distributed to Hungary, Italy, Netherlands and Poland.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0899): Aflatoxins in corn grain from Madagascar; distributed to France.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0900): Salmonella coein in sunflower cake from Italy; notified by Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0901): Metal pieces in lollipop from Spain; distributed to Greece.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2012.0902): Salmonella Tennessee in rapeseed meal from Switzerland; notified by Sweden.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Abrate & Sons Limited recalls Vino Spumante Brut Rosé (750 ml or 1.5 litres; Product of Italy; Lot 1/2009), because the product may have been contaminated with monoethylene glycol.
  • Food Safety Alert (India): The Government of India has extended its ban on the import of dairy products from China for six months from 24 December 2011 (see advisory No. 8/FSSAI/2011). This notice was posted on the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India website on 29 June 2012.

The recalled sprouts were distributed to wholesale and retail accounts in California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Topco Associates recalls Spartan Bacon Ranch Salad Mix (7.5 oz; Sell by 5/17/13cb85 and 5/17/13ca85), Spartan Creamy Italian Salad Mix (8.3 oz; Sell by 5/18/13ca85), Spartan Creamy Parmesan Salad Mix (8.2 oz; Sell by 5/13/13cb85), Spartan Double Cheeseburger Skillet (6.0 oz; Sell by 05/21/13cb85, 04/26/13ca83, and 04/25/13cb83), and Spartan Cheeseburger Skillet (6.0 oz; Sell by 05/21/13cb85), because of the potential for small metal fragments in the product.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Phoenicia Group Inc. (St-Laurent, QC) recalls Alkanater brand Tahina (454g; UPC 6 92551 00002 0; Lot code TT3N-280312; Expiry 28/03/2014), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick, including in Whole Foods Markets, and may have been distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Treasure Mills Inc. recalls Treasure Mills Brownie Bars (800g; Code 125 121; Best before 31MA12; UPC 8 05658 45080 7), due to contamination with unspecified harmful extraneous material. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has decided to ban restaurants from serving Kibbeh, the Lebanese dish made from finely ground raw beef, according to a CBC report.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Frozen Value withdraws Hawai Gourmand Vanilla Chocolate Cone (pack of 8 cones/960 ml), Hawai Gourmand Vanilla Cone with Sugared Hazelnuts (pack of 8 cones/960 ml and pack of 6 cones / 720 ml), Hawai Gourmand 4 Vanilla Chocolate and 4 Chocolate Pistachio (pack of 8 cones/960 ml), Super Duo Chocolate tub White and Milk Chocolate Dairy Ice Cream (875 ml plastic tub), and Albert Heijn Walnut Ice Cream Tub (875 ml plastic tub), because the products contain undeclared nuts, peanuts or sulphites.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Auchan and Simply Market recall Pouce brand Canned Sardines in Tomato (120g can; UPC 3596710741274; Expiration date 20/01/2015, 21/01/2015 et 26/01/2015), because the product may contain histamine.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Alert (Sweden): The National Food Administration warns that certain food supplements contain the substance DMAA (1.3-dimetylamylamin), which can be harmful to health. Affected products include Jack3D, Spriodex, Napalm, and Lipo-y Black.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0873): Insect larvae infestation in fresh red chili from Thailand; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0874): Salmonella spp. in chilled mixed minced meat from Sweden; distributed to Germany, Poland and Sweden.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0876): Salmonella Schwarzengrund in frozen hamburgers from Spain; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0877): Bacillus cereus in organic radish sprouts from Germany; distributed to Germany.
