  • Allergy Alert: Cass-Clay  Creamery (Fargo, ND) recalls Cass-Clay Maple Nut Ice Cream (1 gal/3.78L; UPC 70422-03404; Plant #38-25; all date codes), Cass-Clay Premium Light Maple Nut Ice Cream (1 gal/3.78L; UPC 70422-23404; Plant #38-25; all date codes) and Hornbacher’s Maple Nut Ice Cream (1/2 gal/1.89L; UPC 41130-21666; Plant #38-25; all date codes) due to the presence of undeclared Brazil nuts, and Cass-Clay Premium Light Double Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream (1/2-gal/1.89L; UPC 70422-24061; Plant #38-25; all date codes) due to the presence of undeclared peanut oil and soy lecithin. The recalled products were distributed in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
  • Animal Feed Safety Recall: PMI Nutrition International expands its earlier recall to include additional Mazuri® and LabDiet® animal feed products, because these products may contain elevated levels of vitamin D. The recalled products were distributed nationally in the USA and exported to customers in Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, Singapore, Chile and Uruguay.   • Animal Feed Safety Recall: Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC recalls Purina Fish Chow® Meal (50lb; Lot #May 05 12 1; Formula #5120), due to elevated levels of vitamin D. The recalled products were distributed nationwide.
  • Dietary Supplement Safety Recall: Wellements LLC recalls Baby Move™ Prune Concentrate liquid dietary supplement (4 oz; UPC 729609019878; All lots up to and including Lot #12179), because one of the ingredients used in the product (Purimuni galacto-oligosaccharide) tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled product was distributed nationwide from January 2012 to July 2012 through retail stores and online retailers.
  • Food Safety/Outbreak Alert: FDA warns consumers not to eat raw or partially cooked oysters and clams with tags listing Oyster Bay Harbor, Nassau County, New York as the harvest area, following reports of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses in several states. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation closed Oyster Bay Harbor to shellfish harvesting on July 13. Shellfish harvested from Oyster Bay Harbor were distributed in several states, including, but not necessarily limited to, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: TWI Foods Inc. (Mississauga, ON) recalls Crispy Just Baked Punjabi Cookies (800g plastic clamshell pkgs; UPC 6 27265 00152 0), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled product was distributed nationally.
  • Food Safety Recall: Merrylynd Organics recalls Merrylynd Organics Maple Syrup – Medium (375 mL and 1L; Lots 12-1 and 12-2), due to the presence of heavy metal (lead) contamination. The recalled product was sold in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall Update: Canada Safeway Ltd., Loblaw Companies Ltd. and The Product People Inc. recall Gills Onions Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00044 3; Best before 07/20/12), Gills Onions Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g; Lot code 22RAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00045 0; Best before 07/20/12) and Gills Onions Fresh Diced Celery & Onions (198g; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; UPC 6 43550 00046 7; Best before 07/20/12), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were imported from the USA and sold in Alberta (all three retailers), British Columbia (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Manitoba (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Northwest Territories (Canada Safeway), Ontario (Canada Safeway and Loblaw), Quebec (Loblaw) and Saskatchewan (Canada Safeway and Loblaw).

  • Food Safety Recall: Buona Vita, Inc. (Bridgeton, NJ) recalls various frozen, ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold under the Silver Lake, Buon Gusto, Mamma Cacciatore, Pisa and Sapore Italiano brands (Produced June 26, 2012; Est. No. P-954; Case code 1782), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were sold to distribution facilities nationwide.   • Food Safety Recall: Roxy Trading Inc. (Pomona, CA) recalls Gold Plum Candy (170g/6 oz pkgs; Product of Taiwan; All date codes), due to unacceptable levels of lead. The recalled product was sold in Southern California.
  • Food Safety Recall: Productos Tita Corp (Glendale, NY) recalls Tita brand Quesito Colombiano Colombian Cheese (sold in plastic pouches or rectangular clear plastic tubs; Plant code 36-8440; All date codes), due to improper pasteurization of milk used to make the cheese. The recalled fresh cheese products were sold in the metropolitan New York area.
  • Food Safety Recall: Schnuck Markets, Inc. recalls Tomato Basil Salad, Tortellini Salad and Italian Pasta Salad from 12 Schnucks (DeKalb, IL), Logli (Rockford, IL and Janesville, WI) and Hilander (Rockford, IL and Janesville, WI) stores, because the salads were made using onions recalled by Gills Onions due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled deli salads were sold from the stores’ delis between July 10th and July 18th, 2012.
  • OTC Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall: The Kroger Company advises its customers that Wellements Baby Move Prune Concentrate (4 oz size) may be contaminated with Salmonella and has been recalled. The product was sold at Kroger stores located in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Knoxville, Tennessee, Greater Cincinnati, including Northern Kentucky, Dayton, OH and South Eastern Indiana, Central and Northwest Ohio and N. West Virginia panhandle, Michigan, Indiana (except SW IN, -Evansville-), Illinois, Eastern Missouri, Greater Louisville (including Indiana), Lexington, and Nashville, TN, North Carolina, Virginia, Eastern WV, Eastern Kentucky, SE Ohio, Greater Memphis, TN, Arkansas, Mississippi and Western Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana, Dillon, KingSoopers, Frys, Smiths, 087 – Peyton Southea, 181 – Peyton Norther, 185 – Peyton Buckeye, 388 – Peyton Fountai stores.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that an outbreak of shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli O145 that infected 18 people in 10 states is now over. No source of the infections was ever identified.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Sainsbury’s withdraws Sainsbury’s 8 Chunky Caramel Chocolate Bars (8 x 40g pack; All ‘best before’ date codes up to and including 16 July 2013), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Cambridge Weight Plan recalls Cambridge Weight Plan Lactose-free Vanilla Drink (Best before 5 December 2013), due to the presence of undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Tulip Food Company recalls Foretta Italian Salami (350g; Best before 03.12.12) and GØL Italian Salami (300g; Best before 02.11.12), after some small soft blue pieces were found in the product. The Foretta salami was sold in Netto stores across Denmark; the GØL salami was sold in grocery stores, supermarkets and Salling.
  • Food Safety Recall Update (Multiple Countries): Roquefort cheese that were recalled by La Société Gabriel Coulet SA (France) due to contamination with shigatoxin producing Escherichia coli O26:H11 was distributed in Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1028): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled vacuum packed smoked salmon from Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1030): Excessive propylene glycol in Swiss rolls from Sri Lanka, via the Netherlands; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1031): Undeclared peanut in vanilla wafer from Bulgaria; distributed to Hungary.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1032): Salmonella in minced meat from Poland; distributed to Sweden.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.1033): Undeclared peanut and incorrect use of packaging for Sainsbury’s chunky caramel chocolate bars from Spain; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1034): Listeria monocytogenes in soya shroots from the Netherlands; distributed to Belgium.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.1035): Aflatoxins in rice from Sri Lanka; distributed to Belgium and France.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Department of Health warns the public not to buy or consume the oral product “Tinea Schwartz’s”, as it may contain undeclared prednisone, a steroid, which can cause serious side effects in some individuals when taken over a period of time.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Allergy Alert (Australia): Quality Food World Pty Ltd. recalls Olive Branch Smoked Salmon Dairy Free dip and/or spread (200g plastic tub; Best before 01 NOV 12), due to the presence of undeclared egg. The recalled product was sold at IGA, Harris Farm and other independent supermarkets including green grocers in NSW, QLD, SA and VIC.
  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Woolworths Ltd. recalls Macro Wholefoods Market Organic Biodynamic Almonds (250g resealable package; Best before 16/02/13, 03/03/13 and 17/03/13), due to Salmonella contamination. The recalled product was sold nationally at Woolworths Supermarkets, Safeway, Food for Less, Flemings Supermarkets and Thomas Dux Grocers from May 31st through July 17th, 2012.

  • Food Safety Recall: Gills Onions, LLC (Oxnard, CA) recalls Gill’s Onions brand Diced Yellow Onions (7 oz; UPC 643550000405; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), Diced Red Onions (7 oz; UPC 643550000412; Lot code 22RAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), Slivered Yellow Sweet Onions (5 oz; UPC 643550000092; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), Slivered Red Onions (5 oz; UPC 643550000009; Lot code 22RAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), Diced Celery and Onion (7 oz; UPC 643550000429; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), and Diced Celery and Onion (19 oz; UPC 643550000351; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Use by 07/20/12), because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were shipped between July 2-4, 2012 directly to retailers – including Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4Less, FoodsCo, QFCTop Food and Drug, and Albertsons  in California, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wegmans recalls Cherrystone Clams (Item #64681), because they were harvested from Long Island Shellfish Area NS-2, which was temporarily closed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation due to documented Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses in three people who ate raw or undercooked oysters harvested from this area. The recalled clams were sold on July 15th through July 17th in Wegmans stores in Virginia (Sterling, Fairfax, Gainesville, Woodbridge), Maryland (Hunt Valley, Columbia, Bel Air, Frederick), New Jersey (Princeton), Pennsylvania (State College), and New York (Rochester area, Syracuse area, Southern Tier area, Buffalo area).

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Gills Onions (Oxnard, CA) recalls Gill Onions Fresh Diced Yellow Onions (198g; Product of USA; UPC 6 43550 00044 3; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Best before 07/18/12, 07/19/12, 07/20/12), Gills Onions Fresh Diced Red Onions (198g; Product of USA; UPC 6 43550 00045 0; Lot code 22RAA1A2184; Best before 07/18/12, 07/19/12, 07/20/12) and Gills Onions Fresh Diced Celery & Onions (198g; Product of USA; UPC 6 43550 00046 7; Lot code 22YAA1A2184; Best before 07/18/12, 07/19/12, 07/20/12), due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products may have been distributed nationally. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is working with importers, distributors and retailers to ensure the removal of the recalled products from the marketplace.
  • Natural Health Product Safety Recall: Health Canada announces the recall of Vine Essence, an unauthorized natural health product distributed by United Wings Enterprise Inc (Richmond Hill, ON), after testing identified the presence in the product of low levels of undeclared acetaminophen and a quantity of lead that exceeds acceptable limits.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Hong Kong): PrizeMart Limited recalls TwoBebes Growing Up Milk 3 – for children aged above 12 months (Product of The Netherlands; 900g; All batches). The manufacturer recalled this product after Dutch authorities detected Salmonella in a dietary fibre (galacto-oligosaccharide) produced in Korea that was used as an ingredient in the powdered formula.
