  • Allergy Alert: The Raymond-Hadley Corp (Spencer, NY) recalls Wegmans Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix (17.2 oz; UPC 077890283363; Enjoy By Dates 30 OCT 2013 through 17 MAR 2014). Wegmans Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Mix (16 oz; UPC 077890303412; Enjoy By dates from 26 Mar 2014 through 24 Apr 2014), Wegmans Gluten Free Honey Cornbread Mix (16 oz; UPC 077890303436; Enjoy By dates 25 Mar 2014 through 16 Apr 2014), and Wegmans Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix (15.3 oz; UPC 077890283332; Enjoy By dates 30 Oct 2013 through 12 Apr 2014), because the products may be contaminated with undeclared milk, soy or pecan.
  • Food Safety Recall: Wayne Farms Inc. (Decatur, AL) recalls Wayne Farms Fully Cooked Grill Marked White Meat Chicken Strips (900lb combo cases containing 30 x 30lb bags; Case codes 372277174001 through 372277254005; Produced Oct 3, 2012 and once combo case each from Sept. 6, 2012, Sept 19, 2012 and Sept 24, 2012), because the product may contain pieces of a plastic pen. The recalled product was distributed to a facility in Kentucky for further processing into potential retail products.
  • Food Safety Recall (Amended): Bolthouse Farms recalls Bolthouse Farms Carrot Chips (16-oz bags; Best by NOV 12 2012 and Nove 13 2012; UPC 71464 17209; Code 04 T XXXX BF 212 J11 and 04T XXXX BF 212 J 12, respectively), Safeway Farms Carrot Chips (16 oz bags; UPC 21130 70217; Best by Nov 13, 2012; Code 06 T XXXX S2682 BF 212 J12 286) and Farm Stand Carrot Chips (16 oz bags; UPC 41163 45311; Best by Nov 12-13 2012; Code 04 T XXXX BF 212 J11-12), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed in the USA and Canada. Safeway Farms Carrot Chips are sold in Safeway stores in Ketchikan, Alaska; Arizona; California; Hawaii; Idaho; Montana; Nevada; New Mexico; Oregon; and Washington State, as well as Carrs stores in Juneau, Alaska; Pak ‘N Save stores in California; Randalls stores in Texas and Tom Thumb stores in Texas.
  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Full Circle Penne Rigate Pasta (12 oz; UPC 36800043275) and Full Circle Rotini Pasta (12 oz; UPC 36800049789), because the products do not meet quality standards.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert: CBC reports that an outbreak of norovirus at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital led to the temporary closure of the hospital’s neurology clinic. Approximately 45 staff members because infected after eating food that may have come from a staff-only coffee shop run by the hospital’s Atrium Café. The coffee shop will remain closed until the cause of the outbreak is determined.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): SuperGros recalls First Price Chopped Tomatoes (400g cans; All Lots), after a metal piece is found in one of the cans.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Dia recalls Dia brand Smoked Trout (150g vacuum packs; Product of Spain; UPC 8 48 0017 032324; Expiry dates 14 November and 18 November), after Listeria monocytogenes is detected in the product.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Food Safety has been notified by Australian authorities that the following product may contain the toxin that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: Spring Bay Seafoods Pty Ltd Live Blue Mussels (Harvested from Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia on or after October 22, 2012). Consumers are advised to refrain from eating these mussels.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating three clusters of suspected food poisoning involving a total of five people who developed symptoms of gastroenteritis after consuming desserts purchased at a food premises in Aberdeen on October 31st. All five individuals were hospitalized and are in stable condition.
  • Outbreak Alert (Malaysia): The Malaysia Health Ministry reports that a total of 39 food poisoning episodes involving 849 students have been recorded in 16 schools in Sabah so far this year, according to the Daily Express.

  • Allergy Alert: Perdue Foods, LLC (Bridgewater, VA) recalls Perdue Original Chicken Breast Nuggets (3 x 12-oz tray packs bundled packages; Est P.369; Sell by Dec 16, 2012), due to the presence of undeclared milk. The recalled products were distributed to BJ’s Club Stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bolthouse Farms recalls Bolthouse Farms® Carrot Chips (16 oz; UPC 71464 17209; Best if used by Nov 12 2012 and Nov 13, 2012; Lot codes 04T XXXX BF 212 J11 and 04T XXXX BF 212 J12, respectively), after North Carolina detected Salmonella in a sample of the product. The recalled Carrot Chips were distributed to retail customers in the USA and Canada.
  • Outbreak Alert: Food Safety News reports that at least 16 people in New York state have fallen ill with E. coli O157:H7 after eating Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Spinach and Spring Mix. The retailer recalled 5-oz and 11-oz size containers of the spinach product on November 1st. Illnesses have been reported from four New York counties: Monroe, Niagara, Steuben and Wayne. CDC and FDA are investigating.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Nikol Poulin Inc. recalls Extra brand Bridge Mixture (250g; UPC 0 28109 01252 6), due to the presence of undeclared tree nuts, and Jalousie brand Mélange Bridge Mix (235g; UPC 0 57449 71106 6), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts. The recalled products were sold in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: La P’tite Charcuterie inc (Longueuil, QC) recalls Chorizo Sausage (sold up to and including October 17, 2012), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall: Highland Packers Ltd. recalls BBQ Sized Pigs (Sold between August 14 and 18, 2012), due to the presence of chemical drug residues.
  • Food Safety Recall: Dollarama Inc. recalls Triton Sardines in Vegetable Oil (106g; Code PL 22111853; Lots L-801-2067-1, L-801-2068-2, L-801-2069-1 and L-801-2072-1; UPC 6 67888 08713 6), due to unspecified microbiological contamination. The recalled product was sold in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Olymel S.E.C./L.P. recalls Le Petit Charcutier Cooked Turkey Breast (4.4 kg; Best before 2012 OC 05, 2012 OC 12, 2012 OC 19, 2012 OC 26, 2012 NO 03, 2012 NO 09, 2012 NO 19, 2012 NO 23) and Le Petit Charcutier Smoked Turkey Breast (4.4 kg; Best before 2012 OC 05, 2012 OC 12, 2012 OC 19, 2012 OC 26, 2012 NO 04, 2012 NO 09, 2012 NO 16, 2012 NO 30), due to microbiological spoilage. The recalled products were sold in Quebec.
  • Food Safety Recall: Loblaw Companies Ltd. recalls Larabar Gluten Free Cashew Fruit & Nut Energy Bar (48g, 50g, and 16 x 48g; Use by 30MAY2013), due to microbiological spoilage. The recalled products were sold nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bolthouse Farms recalls Bolthouse Farms® Carrot Chips (Product of USA; 16 oz; UPC 71464 17209; Best if used by Nov 12 2012 and Nov 13, 2012; Lot codes 04T XXXX BF 212 J11 and 04T XXXX BF 212 J12, respectively), after North Carolina detected Salmonella in a sample of the product. The recalled Carrot Chips may have been distributed across Canada.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Finland): HOK-Elanto recalls Halloween donuts, due to the presence of undeclared egg and, possible traces of undeclared hazelnut.
  • Allergy Alert (UK): Asda recalls Asda 14 Caramel Bites (280g pack; Best before 14 September 2013; Batch No. L523732), due to the presence of undeclared peanuts.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Danish Supermarket recalls Budget brand Chocolate Mousse (2 x 70g cups; Best before 6 November, 13 November and 19 November; Produced by Limelco in Belgium), due to mold contamination in some cups.
  • Food Safety Recall (Italy): Life S.R.L. recalls Raw Pistachios (Lot L 219.12; Expiry 30/10/2013), due to the presence of aflatoxin B1 above the acceptable limit.
  • Outbreak Alert Update (Netherlands): Another 37 people have been confirmed to be infected with Salmonella Thompson, bringing the total number of illnesses linked to the consumption of contaminated smoked salmon to 1,063 since the outbreak began. The death toll has risen to four.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Philippines): Asia Pacific News reports that Philippine authorities have ordered the recall of six brands of South Korean noodles made by Nongshim Co. after they were reported to contain benzopyrene, a carcinogen.
  • Food Safety Recall (Taiwan): The China Post reports that King-Town Co. has recalled all packaged rice products from the first harvest of the year – some 500 metric tons – after tests showed that some of the rice products contained excessive levels of pesticide residues.
  • Food Safety Recall (Countries unknown): Spring Bay Seafoods Pty Ltd. recalls Spring Bay Live Blue Mussels (500g & 1 kg vacuum plastic packed; Use by dates between 31 October 2012 and 10 November 2012), Spring Bay Live Blue Mussels (net bag packed; 1Kg & 2 Kg; Use by dates between 29 Octoer 2012 to 6 November 2012), Spring Bay Live Blue Mussels (Bulk-packed for loose sale, 10 Kg and 15 Kg; Packed on dates between 22 October 2012 and 31 October 2012) and Coles Cooked Tasmanian Mussels with Cream White Wine (500g; Use by 12 November 2012), due to the presence of the naturally occurring marine toxin known as paralytic shellfish toxin (PST). The recalled mussels were sold at retail outlets, including Coles in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and ACT, and were exported to some Asian countries.

  • Food Safety Recall: State Garden recalls Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Spinach & Spring Mix (11 oz & 5 oz; UPC 77890-16411 & 77890-16437, respectively; Product sold between 10/14/12 and 11/1/12), because the product may be contaminated with E. coli O157.
  • Pet Food Safety Recall: Charlee Bear Products, a division of Wixon, Inc., recalls Charlee Bear Protein Crunch Bars – Chicken Recipe with Carrots (5.5 oz pkgs; UPC 8710890000; Lot #19812, 19912, 20012 & 20212; Best by dates 07-16-2015, 07-17-2015, 07-18-2015 & 07-20-2015, respectively) and Charlee Bear Protein Crunch Bars – Chicken Recipe with Sweet Potatoes (5.5 oz pkgs; UPC 8710890001; Lot #20112; Best by 07-19-2015), after Salmonella was found in a sample of the Chicken Recipe with Carrots Crunch Bar from Lot #19812. All of the recalled products are manufactured for Charlee Bear by a third-party contract manufacturer. The recalled products were distributed nationally in September and October 2012.

Canada

  • Outbreak Alert Update: The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that sixth case of E. coli O157:H7 has been confirmed in Quebec, bringing the total number of confirmed illnesses in the outbreak related to beef from XL Foods to seventeen (17) cases in Alberta (7), Newfoundland and Labrador (1), Quebec (6) and British Columbia (3).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): The Co-operative recalls Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Peruvian Creamy Milk Chocolate (100g; Best before dates up to and including 9 March 2013), Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Peruvian Dark Chocolate with Dried Sweetened Cranberries (100g; Best before dates up to and including 9 March 2013), and Truly Irresistible Peruvian Dark Chocolate with Hazelnuts ((100g; Best before dates up to and including 9 March 2013), due to the presence of undeclared nuts and milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (Germany): HIPP GmbH & Co. KG Sales recalls HiPP Mixed vegetables with pasta and mini-tender organic beef – Baby Menu Bio (2 x 190g; Lot #L125192; Expiry 27/05/2013; Item #9930), because clumps of noodles contained in the product may represent a choking hazard for infants.
  • Food Safety Withdrawal (Northern Ireland): L&M Meats Northern Ireland has withdrawn vacuum-packed cuts of beef and lamb, because the products were handled and packaged in an unapproved establishment.
