United States

  • Allergy Alert: Quaker Oats Company (Chicago, IL) recalls Quaker Chewy Smashbar Graham Pretzel snack bars (8-count; UPC bar code ending 31108; Best before Oct 29 11 RB, Oct 30 11 MM, Oct 30 11 RB, Nov 22 11 RB, Nov 23 11 RB, Nov 24 11 RB, Nov 27 11 RB, Dec 22 11 RB, Dec 22 11 MM, Dec 23 11 RB, Dec 23 11 MM, Dec 24 11 RB, Dec 24 11 MM), because the product contains undeclared milk.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ludwig Dairy Products, Inc. (Dixon, IL) recalls all Ludwig brand milk, cheese and other dairy products and Nuestro Queso brand drinkable yogurt product, after a routine inspection by the Illinois Department of Public Health found pasteurizing equipment operating improperly, potentially allowing raw milk to be mixed with pasteurized milk and sold in dairy products. The recalled Ludwig and Nuestro Queso milk and dairy products were sold mostly in northern Illinois (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties), as well as in Indiana, New Jersey and New York.
  • Food Recall: Food City recalls Food Club Roasted Red Pepper Dip. No details given.
  • Outbreak Alert: The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment alerts the public to a sharp increase in the number of Listeria monocytogenes infections reported in the state since the beginning of August. Seven new cases were reported since August 29th, for a total of nine during the month of August – nearly equal to Colorado’s typical annual total of 10 cases. The source of the outbreak is under investigation.
  • Animal Vaccine Device Safety Alert: FDA warns veterinarians and pet owners, particularly cat owners, of the possible risk of fractures with the Vet Jet™ transdermal vaccination system device. The device, made by Bioject, Inc., is sold exclusively as the delivery system for the Merial product, PUREVAX® Recombinant Feline Leukemia Vaccine. The device delivers the leukemia vaccine through the skin to cats. FDA is aware of three recent adverse event reports involving the use of the Vet Jet™ device in kittens. Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Indianlife Food Corporation expands its earlier recall to include the following Indianlife brand Papadums (120g packages; Product of India; Codes up to and including 11238), which may contain undeclared gluten: Black pepper, Cumin, Green Chili and Plain. The recalled products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec and may have been distributed nationally, including in Whole Foods Market stores.
  • Allergy Alert: Double Food Trading recalls Tapioca Starch Pearls (3kg; Mfg 10.12.26; Exp 11.12.26), due to the presence of undeclared sulphites.
  • Allergy Alert: Possmei Canada Inc. (Markham, ON) recalls various Possmei brand tea flavour mix powder products (Product of Taiwan; 1000g/35.27oz pkgs; all lot codes), because the packages include a non-dairy creamer that contains undeclared milk ingredient. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products.
  • Food Recall: Lilydale recalls Lilydale Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs (Costco item #44845; Best before September 4th to September 6th, 2011, inclusive), due to early spoilage issues. The recalled chicken thighs were sold at Costco Wholesale in British Columbia between August 27 and August 31, 2011.
  • Natural Health Product Safety Recall: Wing Quon Enterprises Ltd. recalls Bi Yan Plan (NPN# 80023876; all lots) after the product was found to contain an excessive amount of mercury.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Marks & Spencer withdraws Marks & Spencer Roast Potatoes, 400g (Use by 6 September 2011 and 7 September 2011), because the product contains undeclared gluten, wheat and milk.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): EcoProtein recalls BetterBar Raw Brazilian Nuts & Cocoa, Raw Vanilla & Almonds, and Raw Coconut & Barley Grass organic energy bars (44g; Shelf life of 15/2-2012, 12/2-2012 and 15/2-2012, respectively), due to mold growth on the bars.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1183): Insect infestation in risotto rice from Italy, via the United Kingdom; distributed to Ireland.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1184): Adulteration of feed additives from Brazil, via China; distributed to Slovenia.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1185): Salmonella in meat and bone meal from Sweden; distributed to Denmark, Hungary, Latvia and Sweden.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Chinese Medicine Safety Recall (Hong Kong): Wah Shun Medicine Limited recalls ChuFengT’ouKu Wan, a licensed proprietary Chinese medicine imported from the Mainland, after the Department of Health found traces of paracetamol, a western drug, in the product. Wah Shun also has suspended the sale of a related product, Kong Kwood Sun Wan, which has the identical herbal formula and is from the same Mainland manufacturer.

  • Allergy Alert: Pure Encapsulations (Sudbufy, MA) recalls Pure Encapsulations PreNatal Nutrients (60-count & 120-count; Lot #3560111A and 3560111B; Best by 01/13), because the product contains undeclared egg. One allergic reaction has been reported. PreNatal Nutrients was distributed nationwide through healthcare practitioners.
  • Food Recall: Giant Eagle announces recall of Value Time Milk Chocolate Frosting (Sell by June 20 12 WW), because the product may contain undeclared Yell0w #5 and #6 food dyes.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Indianlife Food Corporation expands its earlier recall to include the following products: Indianlife Black Pepper Papadums (Code #11042 and 11101), Indianlife Cumin Papadums (Code #11069), and Indianlife Plain Papadums (Code #10249, 10351, 11027 and 11111), due to the presence of undeclared gluten. The recalled Papadums were imported from India and distributed in Alberta, BC, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. There has been one illness reported.
  • Allergy Alert: McBuns Bakery recalls various McBuns brand baked goods, due to the presence of undeclared soy or sulphites. The recalled products were distributed in New Brunswick.
  • Allergy Alert: McBuns Bakery recalls McBuns Butterscotch Oatmeal Cookies (420g), due to the presence of undeclared milk and soy.
  • Food Safety Recall: Johnvince Foods (Downsview, ON) recalls President’s Choice Raw California Walnut Halves, Unsalted (250g; Best before 2012 OC 07) and Reddi Snack Hand Selected California Walnuts (350g; Code #16581), because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The recalled walnuts were imported from the USA, packaged in Canada, and distributed nationally in Canada.
  • Food Safety Recall: Ferme aux Pleines Saveurs (Saint-André-Avellin, QC) recalls all lots of Pesto fleurs d’ail biologique, Pesto à la coriandre, Pesto au basillic, and Purée d’ail (100 mL glas jars), because the products may not be safe for consumption.

  • Allergy Alert Update: So Ono Food Products (Honolulu, HI) expands earlier recall to include So Ono Fresh Caesar Salad with Chicken (9.5-oz containers; Use by 09/01/11 through 09/04/11), because the product contains undeclared egg.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Northern Boulevard Corporation (Jackson Heights, NY) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s wholesale distribution facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Airline Seafood, Inc. (Houston, TX) that a November 2010 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • Food Recall: Price Chopper recalls Clear Value Oyster Crackers (Lot No. Jan 11, 2012 AB), because of the product’s potential to exhibit odd odors.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Simla Foods recalls Asian Delight Butter Chicken Samosa, 400g and Asian Delight Chicken Halal Pakora, 500g, because the products contain undeclared soy.
  • Allergy Alert: Gelatissimo Ltd. recalls Gelato Factory Tiramisu (11.4 L; Lot 2818), because the product contains undeclared egg and wheat.
  • Allergy Alert: QOOLA Holdings recalls Yocream Non-fat New York Style Cheesecake Frozen Yogurt Mix (1.89L; Codes 0391 and 0961), due to the presence of undeclared egg.
  • Food Safety Recall: Afroleck Inc. recalls NDEYE brand Arachide en Poudre Noflaye (300g; Best before 31DE2011) and NDEYE brand Pâte d’arachide Tigadèguè (500g; Best before 30AU2012), because the products contain aflatoxin.

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (UK): Reckitt Benckiser (UK) Ltd. recalls all remaining unexpired stock of Nurofen Plus tablets in any pack size, after receiving reports of rogue bluster strips of Seroquel XL 50mg and Neurontin 100mg tablets in cartons of Nurofen Plus tablets.
  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): Atria Scandinavia recalls Lithells Hot Dogs (Best before September 17, 18 and 19), after Listeria is found in the product.
  • Food Safety Recall (Sweden): ICA recalls ICA hot dogs (900g and 630g; Best before 14 and 16 September) and Euroshopper hot dogs (900g; Best before 16 September), after Listeria was found during a routine check.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Gert Nielsen A/S recalls Chopped Pork (approx. 2.5kg; Expiry 22/08/2011) and chopped Svinesmåkød, max 12% (Expiry 20-08-2011), because Salmonella has been found in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Six cases of E. coli infections, including five children and one staff member, have been confirmed at the James Cook University Hospital nursery in Middlesbrough.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1162): Salmonella enterica in minced meat from Poland; distributed to Slovakia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1163): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled smoked salmon from Poland; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1164): Undeclared hazelnut in chocolate sugared almonds from Germany; distributed to Italy.

  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1169): Listeria monocytogenes in, and abnormal smell of, chilled smoked halibut from Poland; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1170): Parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled Atlantic mackerel from Norway; distributed to Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy.
  • Animal Feed Safety Notification (EU #2011.1171): Cadmium in calcium carbonate from Spain; distributed to Spain.

  • Medical Device Safety Recall: CooperVision Australia Pty. Ltd. recalls various batches of Avaira Toric Contact Lenses due to the unintended presence of a residue on lenses from certain lots. The problem was discovered as a result of consumer complaints.
