  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Grand BK Corp (Maspeth, NY) that an August 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing and importer establishment revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Lebanese Arak Corp (Glendale, CA) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s manufacturing facility revealed serious violations of the juice Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns K. Heeps, Inc. (Allentown, PA) that an August 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Herbal Nitro Inc. (Yucaipa, CA) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary supplement firm revealed significant violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nutrition Center, Inc., dba Nutri-West (Douglas, WY) that an April 2011 inspection of the company’s dietary manufacturing facility revealed violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulation for Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns High Quality Organics (Reno, NV) that a March 2011 inspection of the company’s food manufacturing and repackaging facility revealed that four of the company’s products – organic ground ginger, organic ground chili pepper, organic sandia chile powder, and organic ground coriander – were adulterated, in that they were found to be contaminated with Salmonella. The contaminated products were recalled in March 2011.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Merex Inc. (Halifax, Canada) that a February 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Willharvdoit Corporation (Milwaukee, WI) that a May/June 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Ireland): P & B (Foods) Ltd. recalls Heera Milk Powder (200g and 700g; all batches; all best before dates), because the product was repackaged at an unapproved premises in the UK.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1350): Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in red paprika pigment from Hong Kong; distributed to France.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1354): Aflatoxins in whole egusi seeds from Ghana; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1355): Aflatoxins in peanuts from Ghana; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1356): Unauthorized operator for Heera brand milk powder from France, packaged in the United Kingdom; distributed to Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1357): Mercury in fish from Senegal; distributed to Germany.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (Singapore): Fonterra recalls Chesdale Processed Cheese Slices (250g; Best before 16 July 2012), after a fragment of metal was found in a pack of the cheese in New Zealand.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert (Australia): The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) advises health professionals and consumers that TGA has not approved the use of topiramate to assist with weight loss. Use of the drug for weight loss is associated with “serious adverse events.”

United States

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Prolab Nutrition Inc. (Chatsworth, CA) and Canadian importers recall several PROLAB® brand protein products, because the products may contain undeclared milk and/or wheat gluten. The recalled protein products were imported from the USA and sold in Ontario – and possibly nationally – by retail stores, mail order and direct delivery.   • Food Safety Alert: The BC Centre for Disease Control is advising the public that products made by Chilcotin Harvest and distributed in the Williams Lake area, and sold from the Ethical Kitchen restaurant in North Vancouver should not be consumed, due to safety issues with the company’s processing practices that present a risk of Clostridium botulinum or E. coli in the meat products. Please refer to the BC CDC notice for a complete list of affected products, which were sold in individual retail packages.

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (UK): Lindt and Sprüngli withdraws Lindt Lindor White Chocolate Truffles, 200g (Batch numbers L4711, L2681, L2621 and L3691; Best before 31 July 2012 and 31 August 2012), because the products may contain traces of undeclared hazelnut and almonds.
  • Food Safety Recall (France): Distributors of Casino, Dia, Irma, Le Mutant, Monoprix, Norma, Parot, and Selecto brands of Sparkling Mineral Water/Eau Minérale Gazeuse, 125cl (Best before 09-12; Lot #L244-11, L256-11 and L259-11), because the contents may contain small pieces of glass.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): Defco A/S recalls Silk Cut Fried Chicken (110g; Package date 6/9/2011; Expiry 29/9/2011), because the product is contaminated with high levels of Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Medical Device Safety Recall (Italy): CooperVision Inc. recalls Avaira™ Toric contact lenses, because some lenses may have a residue. This is part of a multi-country recall, which was initiated by the company in August 2011.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1340): Listeria monocytogenes in frozen roast beef from Ireland; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Pet Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1341): Salmonella typhimurium in dog chews from Germany; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1342): Insect infestation of mackerel fillets in olive oil from Morocco; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1343): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from Denmark; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1344): Mercury in frozen swordfish from South Korea; distributed to France, Italy and Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1345): Ochratoxin A in ground dried chili dispatched from the Netherlands; distributed to Ireland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1346): Unauthorized lincomycin in honey from China; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1347): Norovirus in frozen fruit mix from Belgium; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1348): Mold growth in cheese spread from France; distributed to Malta.

  • Outbreak Alert (India): Twenty-three people from Karadikkal village in Tamil Nadu were admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning after eating fish caught in a local tank.

  • Food Safety Recall: Greencore USA, Inc. (Cincinnati, OH) recalls Thornton’s Quick Café’s Chef Salad (5.6-oz plastic bowl; Enjoy by dates 09/30/11, 20/02/2011 or 10/03/2011), because grape tomatoes used in these salads may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products were distributed to retail stores in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
  • Food Safety Recall: Thorntons, Inc. (Louisville, KY) recalls Quick Café Garden Salads (6 oz) and Quick Café Chef Salads (5.6 oz), because they contain grape tomatoes that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled salads were manufactured and distributed by Greencore U.S.A. to select stores in Chicago, Ill, Cincinnati, OH, Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, IN, Evansville, IN, Lexington, KY and Nashville, TN. The product comes in a black bowl with clear lid and is marked with expiration dates 9/30/2011, 10/2/2011, and 10/3/2011 on the label on the front of the package.
  • Food Safety Alert: Wegmans advises customers that the following fresh cut cantaloupe products sold at Buffalo-area stores only between August 31 and September11 may have contained cantaloupe that was recalled by Jensen Farms due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes: Cantaloupe Chunks, Cantaloupe Slices, Gourmet Fruit Salad, Small Fruit Salad, Small and Large Fruit Salad with Pineapple, Fruit Salad with Kiwi, and Fruit Trays.
  • Boil Water Advisory: Customers of the Oysterville water system (Pacific County, Washington) have been advised to boil water, because E. coli was detected in the water system.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Food Safety Alert (Colombia): INVIMA advises the public that Zarpollo Salchicha de Pollo (Lot #4361111) and Premium Zarpollo Jamón de Pollo (Lot #3371117), manufactured by Zarcarnicos S.A., may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. INVIMA recommends that consumers not eat these products under any circumstances, and asks the public to inform health authorities of the possible presence of these foods in supermarkets, meat markets or delicatessens.
