United States

  • Allergy Alert: Price Chopper/CMC Bakery recalls CMC Cake in a Cup, CMC Coffee Cakes, Creme Cakes and Crumb Cakes (Lot #RC11243BH003), because the recalled products may contain chocolate.
  • Food Safety Recall: Price Chopper advises its customers that Polaner Sugar Free W/Fiber Grape Jam (13.5 oz; Lot R11439; Best by 3/9/2013) has been recalled because a piece of glass was found in one jar.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Nordimex, LLC (San Diego, CA) that a May 2011 inspection of the company’s facility revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packaging, Labeling or Holding Operations for Dietary Supplements (CGMP) regulations for Dietary Supplements.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Hong Kong Food Company (Los Angeles, CA) that an August/September 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns ECRS, LLC dba Big Chef (Hollywood, FL) that a July/August 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation, and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Marché Marie-Lynn (Longueuil, QC) recalls Grape Danish, Raspberry Danish and Almond Creme Croissant, because the pastry products contain undeclared egg.
  • Food Safety Recall (Expanded): Shellfish processors have expanded their original recall of raw mussels to include raw in-shell oysters and shucked oysters, because the shellfish products may contain paralytic shellfish toxins. The recalled oysters were harvested between October 2 and 14, 2011 from sub area 15-4, Okeover Inlet, British Columbia and were distributed – primarily to wholesalers, restaurants and other institutional clients – in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, and possibly to other provinces and territories. Please refer to the recall notice for a detailed list of affected processors and shellfish.
  • Food Safety Recall: Loblaw Companies Ltd. recalls President’s Choice Milk Chocolate and Almond Caramel Clusters (195g; All lot codes), because the product may be contaminated with glass particles.

United States

  • Allergy Alert: Phil’s Fresh Foods, Inc. (Boulder, CO) recalls EVOL. Burritos Fire Grilled Chicken Fajitas (7-oz cartons; Produced between Feb. 2, 2011 and Feb. 3, 2011), and EVOL. Burritos Fire Grilled Steak Fajitas (7-oz cartons; Produced between Feb. 2, 2011 and Feb. 3, 2011), as the chicken fajita packages may contain steak, and the steak fajita packages may contain chicken. The recalled fajitas were distributed to retail establishments nationwide.
  • Food Safety Recall: Osamu Corporation (Gardena, CA) recalls frozen ground tuna (Lot #7013), because FDA found decomposition in several samples of the product and also found elevated histamine levels in samples taken from one retail location. The recalled tuna was shipped to three distributors – AFC Corporation, Red Shell Foods, and Pacific Fresh Fish Company – from 08/18/11 to 09/08/11. Pacific Fresh Fish Company is a Los Angeles cash and carry establishment; the other two distributors have sushi franchises located in grocery stores.   • Public Health Alert: The Ohio Department of Agriculture has issued a public health alert for all meat and poultry wraps and salads produced by the Columbus Sandwich Company (Pickerington, OH) that were produced without the benefit of inspection.  The affected sandwiches and salads were produced from July 2011 through the present, and distributed to various retail and restaurant locations throughout Columbus (Ohio), including Global Gallery, Kafe Kerouac, Hagerty Hall at OSU (“Java Master”), Java Central, Underground Café, Java’s Cyber Espresso Bar (Convention Center), and Java’s Cyber Espresso Bar (Columbus Public Library).
  • Food Safety Recall: River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC (Salinas, CA) recalls 4 varieties of Hy-Vee bagged salads (Best by 14OCT2011), and 4 varieties of Giant Eagle’s Farmers Market brand bagged salads (Best by October 14, 2011), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): WIOS Food ApS recalls all lots and dates of Tarte à la creme de cacao and Brownies, due to an excessive amount propylene glycol.
  • Food Safety Recall (Denmark): System Fruit A/S recalls Fresh Estragon (20g; Lot #273, 274, 275, 276 and 277), because Salmonella was found in a sample of the product.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1427): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled gorgonzola cheese from Italy; distributed to Austria.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1430): Listeria monocytogenes in frozen smoked salmon from Denmark; distributed to Italy.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2011.1432): Undeclared milk ingredient in orange and grenadine flavoured ice stick from Belgium; distributed to Greece.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2011.1433): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled sliced smoked salmon from Denmark; distributed to Italy.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Alert (Israel): The Israeli Health Ministry has warned the public not to consume the following smoked salmon products, because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes: Fish World EXTRA PRODUCT brand Smoked Salmon (150g pkg; Sell by 21:10:11 and 26.10.11) and Dlapis Ltd cold smoked salmon (200g; Dates 02:10:11 and 02:11:11).
  • Outbreak Alert (Afghanistan): More than 200 NATO soldiers who ate at a Germany army canteen in northern Afghanistan developed food poisoning. The 138 Germans and 68 military from other countries have recovered from their symptoms.

  • Allergy Alert: NOW Foods recalls Brewer’s Yeast Tablets, 10 grain, 650 mg, 200 tablets/bottle (Product code 2410; Lot #1334119, 1354098, and 1362375), and 500 tablets/bottle (Product code 2412; Lot #1347607, 1334773, and 1358774), due to the presence of undeclared milk allergen. The recalled Brewer’s Yeast Tablets were distributed throughout the USA and exported to other countries.
  • Food Safety Recall: Giant Eagle recalls several Giant Eagle Deli Sandwich Rings (Large Italian, Mini Italian, Large New York, Mini New York, Large All American, Mini All American; All outstanding lots), because the lettuce used in the sandwich rings may be contaminated with Listeria.

Canada

  • Allergy Alert: Marché de La Rousselière inc (dba Metro Plus, Montreal, QC) recalls Banana Cake, Maple & Nut Cake and 4-Quart Cake, because the cakes may contain undeclared milk, nuts and/or sulfites.
  • Allergy Alert: Global Trading Network Ltd. recalls numerous kimchi products due to the presence of undeclared allergens, including fish, crustacean/shellfish and sesame seeds. Please refer to the recall notice for a complete list of affected products, which were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.
  • Allergy Alert: Mr. Croquette recalls Pre-fried Nasi-Hapjes (Rice Patties), Pre-fried Bami-Hapjes (Noodle Patties), Regular Nasi-Hapjes, and Regular Bami-Hapjes (4 or bulk count; All codes), due to the presence of undeclared milk, soy and wheat. The recalled products were distributed in Ontario.
  • Food Safety Recall: Hygaard Fine Foods (Est 318; Sherwood Park, Alberta) recalls Hygaard Mini Sub Sandwiches (130g pkgs; Best before OCT 21), because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sandwiches were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut and Yukon Territories.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Recall (South Korea): The Food and Drug Administration recalls Homeplus and Private Brand Red Pepper, because Clostridium perfringens was detected in the product.
  • Outbreak Alert (Hong Kong): The Centre for Health Protection is investigating a fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection involving a 59-year old may with chronic illnesses.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Public Health Alert (Australia): South Australia Health issued a public health alert after being notified that a food handler at the Yakatori Takumi restaurant on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide has been diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Patrons who ate at the restaurant between September 21st and October 4th may have been exposed to possible Hepatitis A virus infection.

Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Cosmetic Product Safety Alert (Mexico & Colombia): Mexico’s Federal Health Authority has seized raw material and suspended the manufacture of Aguamary Face and Eye Cream by Aguaruto Cosmetics, after detecting high levels of mercury in the cosmetic cream.
