United States

  • Prescription Pharmaceutical Product Safety Alert: FDA and Endo Pharmaceuticals warn the public that certain Endo prescription products may have been subjected to a remote possibility of product mix-ups on the part of Endo’s contract manufacturer (Novartis Consumer Health, Inc.). Prescription tablets affected by this Alert include OPANA® ER Extended Release Tablets, OPANA® Tablets, Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Tablets, PERCOCET® Tablets, PERCODAN® Tablets, ENDOCET® Tablets, ENDODAN® Tablets, Morphine Sulfate Extended-Release Tablets, and ZYDONE® Tablets.
  • Food Withdrawal: Topco withdraws Spartan Fruit Pals Fruit Flavored Snacks – Assorted Fruit Flavors (5.4-oz box; Sell by 5/12/12 and 5/11/12), due to multiple complaints of hard pieces being reported in the Cherry flavored packs.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Greencore OARS, LLC (Byfield, MA) that February/March 2011 and September/October 2011 inspections of the company’s ready-t0-eat sandwich manufacturing facility (Brockton, MA) revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in environmental swabs and finished product samples.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Jang Soo Farm, Inc. dba Rainier Sprouts (Tacoma, WA) that an August/September 2011 inspection of the company’s sprout growing facility revealed the presence and activity of rodents and insects, in addition to insanitary conditions and practices.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Homeneeds, Inc. (Bothell, WA) that a June/July 2011 inspection of the company’s food storage and repacking facility (Woodinville, WA) revealed serious violations of FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for manufacturing, packing, or holding human food.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Gulfish, LP (Sausalito, CA) that a November 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility (San Francisco, CA) revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point regulation.
  • FDA Warning Letter: FDA warns Li Da Seafood Trading, Inc. (Flushing, NY) that a November 2011 inspection of the company’s seafood processing facility revealed serious violations of the seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulation and the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for foods.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (UK): Makro recalls Tapas Chorizo Sliced (80g & 200g; bought after 6 October 2011), Tapas Serrano Ham Sliced (80g & 300g; bought after 6 October 2011) and Tapas Trio Sliced (150g; bought after 6 October 2011; contains Serrano ham, Chorizo sausage and Salchichol), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Safety Recall (Greece): Makro Cash & Carry recalls Tapas Serrano Ham (1.5kg), Tapas Chorizo Sausage Sliced (80g & 200g), Tapas Ham Serrano Cons (80g & 300g) and Tapas Varieties Sausage slices (150g), due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Food Recall (Denmark): Dansk Supermarked Indkøb recalls ATCO hazelnut kernels (200g net wt; Best before 30.10.2012; Lot #L2384; Packaged in Germany) due to larvae infestation.
  • Food Recall (Denmark): Hedegaard Foods A/S recalls Pasteurized whole eggs in cups (4 cups, totaling 160g; Batch #H838; Best before 08.02.2012) due to a fishy odor and taste.
  • Contact Lens Recall (UK): Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recalls ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses (8.8 Base Curve; -2.00D, -2.75D and -3.00D; Lot # L001RJ5, L001RJ8 and L001RJ9, respectively) following an isolated interruption in the lens rinsing process on one manufacturing line.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0003): Campylobacter spp. in fresh spring onions from Thailand; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0004): Campylobacter spp. in red chili peppers from Vietnam; distributed to Denmark.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0005): Listeria monocytogenes in chilled cooked shrimps from Spain; distributed to France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0008): Salmonella typhimurium in chilled smoked bacon from France; distributed to Italy, Portugal and Spain.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0015): Undeclared gluten in gluten-free baby porridge from Poland; distributed to Austria, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Germany, Hungary and Slovenia.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0016): Listeria monocytogenes in smoked salmon from the United Kingdom; distributed to Switzerland.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0023): High aluminium content in vermicelli noodles from China, via the Netherlands; distributed to Germany.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0029): Mercury in sliced frozen blue shark manufactured in Italy, with raw material from Vietnam; distributed to Italy.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0037): Aflatoxins in groundnut cakes (Kuli-kuli) from Nigeria; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0038): Aflatoxins in white maize from Nigeria; distributed to the United Kingdom.
  • Allergy Alert Notification (EU #2012.0039): Undeclared mustard and celery in chilled cheese product from the Netherlands; distributed to Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Food Safety Notification (EU #2012.0040): Anisakis infestation of frozen horse mackerel from Spain, via Bulgaria; distributed to Romania.

Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands

  • Food Safety Enforcement Action (Abu Dhabi): The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority has seized Vimto Fruit Drink (250mL bottles) from retail outlets after the product was determined to be contaminated. The nature of the contamination was not specified.
  • Food Safety Alert (India): A survey of milk samples carried out by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has revealed that more than two-thirds of the milk samples tested contained adulterants, including water, skim milk powder, glucose and detergents.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall (Australia): Nouveau Smiles Pty Ltd recalls BDazzled Teeth Whitening System for home use, because the product contains an excessive concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The recalled product was sold nationally.
  • Outbreak Alert (Australia): Health officials have shut down a restaurant in Ballarat, VIC as part of an investigation into a suspected Salmonella outbreak linked to the restaurant. The Health Department has confirmed 13 cases of Salmonella; five additional cases are still under investigation. One death also is being investigated and may be linked to the same outbreak.

  • Allergy Alert: Enhorabuena! (Bayamón, PR) recalls Palitos de Guayaba/Guava Sticks (7-oz bags, 11-oz cans and 10-unit packs), due to the presence of undeclared milk, wheat, tree nuts, and eggs. The recalled product was distributed in Puerto Rico retail stores during December 2011.
  • Allergy Alert: Bloch’s Best Inc. dba Laromme (Monsey, NY) recalls Laromme brand Vanilla Rugelach (14-oz containers; UPC 87062500954-8), due to the presence of undeclared eggs. The recalled product was distributed in retail stores in Massachusetts, Maryland and New Jersey between November 2nd and December 22, 2011.
  • Allergy Alert: Price Chopper recalls Gourmet Stuffed Clams (UPC 20918100000; Sold October 1st through December 23, 2011), due to the presence of undeclared milk, wheat and eggs.
  • Food Safety Alert: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Pepin Heights Orchards advise consumers to avoid drinking Pepin Heights brand Honeycrisp 100 Percent Fresh Pressed Apple Cider (64-oz plastic jugs; Use by FEB 09 12), after department lab tests found some product may be contaminated with patulin, a mycotoxin. The affected product was distributed in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
  • Food Safety Recall: Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Inspection Program temporarily halts all cooked-meat processing for retail and wholesale at Kleoppel Meats d.b.a Alma Meats (Alma, MO) due to violations identified during an inspection. Kleoppel Meats d.b.a. Alma Meats is recalling 320 pounds of meat, including summer sausage, snack sticks, beef jerky and roast pork produced on various dates between November 14, 2011 and November 23, 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: Green Valley Food Corp. expands its earlier recall of Let’s Grow Healthy Together, Green Valley Food Corp, and Broccosprouts sprout and salad blend products to include additional products. The recall was initiated after random samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Please refer to the January 3, 2012 recall notice for a detailed list of recalled products.
  • Food Safety Recall: Bekkum Family Farms LLC (Westby, WI) recalls Nordic Creamery Brand Grumpy Goat Shreds (8 oz bags; Code date 10-MAR-12), because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product was sold in Wisconsin, Minnesota and California beginning November 11, 2011.
  • Food Safety Recall: S. Martinelli & Company (Watsonville, CA) recalls Martinelli’s Gold Medal Sparkling Cider (250mL glass bottles in six-packs; Best by 11 APR 2014, 12 APR 2014, 13 APR 2014 and 14 APR 2014), due to the possibility of a defective seal that could break when opening the bottle. The recalled product was distributed in the Western USA.
  • Food Safety Recall: Rich Products Corporation recalls 1/4 Sheet Vanilla Flavored Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored (Product Code 00405; Produced after July 10, 2011), because small plastic fragments from the packaging were found on top of the product. The recalled product was produced by Rich’s in Ocoyoacac, Mexico and imported into the USA by Rich’s.
  • Outbreak Alert Update: CDC reports that 19 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium infections in seven states are linked to consumption of ground beef purchased from Hannaford supermarkets. The confirmed illnesses were reported in Hawaii (1), Kentucky (1), Massachusetts (1), Maine (4), New Hampshire (6), New York (5) and Vermont (1).

Europe

  • Allergy Alert (Germany): Milupa GmbH recalls Milubrei Abendbrei Banana Cereal, for ages 4-months and up, due to the presence of undeclared gluten and wheat.
  • Food Safety Recall (Switzerland): Ferme de Jouvence recalls Le Camembert Fermier (275g pkg; Lot #11309VC; Best if used by 14.01.2012), because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. The camembert was imported into Switzerland from France in mid-December 2011.
  • Pharmaceutical Product Safety Recall (France): Le Laboratoire Hospira France recalls Tomudex 2mg Powder for Infusion solution (Lots #1857244V (EXP février 2013), 1857244M (EXP février 2013), 1857244F (EXP février 2013), 1857245P (EXP mars 2013), and 1857245W (EXP mars 2013)), because the sterility of the product may not be assured.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): Coles Supermarkets Pty Ltd recalls Coles Frozen Chicken and Vegetable Pies (4-pack/700g; Best before 18 MAR 13 and 19 MAR 13), due to the presence of bone fragments. The recalled products were distributed nationally in Coles, BI-LO and Pick n’ Pay stores.

  • Allergy Alert: Shamrock Foods (Phoenix, AZ) recalls approximately 7,500 pounds of marinated beef and marinated chicken products because the marinated beef product contains undeclared soybeans, wheat, and sulfites, and the marinated chicken product contains undeclared wheat, milk and sulfites. The recalled products were produced from Dec. 1, 2011 through Dec. 29, 2011, and shipped to food service institutions in Arizona.
  • Food Safety Recall/Alert: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) warns consumers to avoid consumption of certain Fromagerie Marie Kade brand cheese and milk products because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The cheeses were recalled by the Canadian manufacturer (3903052 Canada Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec) after consumption of one of the cheeses was linked to a single case of listeriosis in Canada. The affected cheeses were distributed to Cedar Market (Norwood, MA) and Bahnan’s (Worcester, MA) and include the following items: Akawi Cheese (Best Before 08 MAR 2012), Baladi Cheese (Best Before 08 FEB 2012), Shinglish Cheese (Best Before 07 NOV 2012), Tresse Cheese (Best Before 10 NOV 2012), Vachekaval Cheese (Best Before 10 MAR 2012), Halloom (Best Before 01 MAY 2012), and Moujadale (Best Before 04 MAY 2012).
  • Food Safety Recall: Green Valley Food Corp expands its earlier recall of sprout products to include additional products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company expanded its recall after testing of several random samples yielded Listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes Let’s Grow Healthy Together, Green Valley Food Corp and Broccosprouts brands of products. Please refer to the recall notice for complete details.
  • Food Safety Recall: Miller’s Cheese Corp recalls several Miller’s Shredded Cheese and Haolam Shredded Cheese products, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled cheeses were sold in Stop & Shop and Giant Food stores.
  • Food Safety Recall: The Kroger Company advises its customers that Wrapped Iceberg Lettuce (24 ct) has been recalled from affected Smith’s stores in North Carolina, Virginia, Eastern WV, Eastern Kentucky, and SE Ohio, due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
  • Personal Care Product Safety Recall: HimalayaUSA® recalls Organique by Himalaya Nourishing Night Cream (Batch #S691001 and #S691002), due to contamination with Staphylococcus aureus and fungus.

Canada

  • Food Safety Recall: Safie Specialty Foods Company, Inc. recalls Sweet Pickled Beets (1L jars; Best before Aug 18, 2013 or later), after a consumer finds glass in the product. The recalled products were sold between August 18 and December 30, 2011 in Costco Wholesale warehouses in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Europe

  • Food Safety Recall (Finland): Lidl Finland Ky recalls Harvin brand Pineapple slices (565g; Code L2312A1324 – 31.12.2013), because the product contains tin in excess of the allowable limit.
  • Outbreak Alert (UK): Two wards at Wrexham Maelor Hospital have been closed to new admissions due to an outbreak of norovirus at the hospital.

Australia and New Zealand

  • Food Safety Recall (Australia): SA Sprouts recalls all sprout varieties (all Use By dates up to and including 06 01 12), due to contamination with E. coli. The recalled sprouts were sold at Foodlands, IGA and Fruit and vegetable stores in South Australia.
